E DITOR? IAL ?

Grateful to Allaah Almighty

By: Hazrat Maulana Mufti Mohammad Rahmatullah Sahib
Qaasmi Daamat barakatuhum
(Editor-in-chief AN-NOOR)

Since July 2016, where all kinds of work

and academic activities were affected, the
regular publication of AN-NOOR was also
affected due to unrest in the Kashmir valley.
After the lapse of six months, a joint issue of
three months AN-NOOR was published for
reducing the gap. Now to close the gap
completely, this lastest issue of AN-NOOR is a
joint issue of four months (November-2016 to
February-2017) which is of 128 pages. If
Allaah Almighty wills, the following issues of
the monthly AN-NOOR will be published
regularly from March 2017. The respected
readers are requested to supplicate by heart
that may Allaah Almighty make all coming
stages easy and make this journal beneficial
for all and a source of Maghfirah for its editors,
authors, writers, publishers, assisstants and
compilers. We are gratefull to Allaah Almighty
for making us able to resume the publication
of this Islaamic journal regularly.

Completion of incomplete work

From Shawwaal al-Mukarram 1437 AH to
Rabi al-Awwal 1438 AH, Kashmir passed
through such a stage that affected all walks of
life, and the activities of Deeni-Madaaris also
got affected. Moreover, the heavy snowfall and
severe cold in January 2017 brought more
problems.
The respected readers are familiar that
an appeal was made under the heading:
Sadaqah Jaariyyah at different intervals
about the purchasement of land after which
many well-off Muslim men and women were
depositing the cost of one marla of land
(60,000.00) or the cost of half marla of land
(30,000.00) in the bank account of Daarul-
Uloom Raheemiyyah Bandipora for gifting the
purchased piece of land to Hazrat Nabi Akram
(Sallallaahu-alaihi-wasallam) or to the saintly
elders or to establish a Sadaqah Jaariyyah
for their dears and nears. In the same way,
the construction of library and kitchen was
halted. These are all essential needs. While
considering the increasing roll and academic
activities of Faiz-e-aam Secondary School
Bandipora, it has became necessary to provide
a chunk of land to this school immediately.
5 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Now the spring has begun. Snowfall and

cold have gone. The time for doing some work
has started. Therefore, it is intended to
complete the pending works at the
Raheemiyyah campus Bandipora with full
enthusiasm. It is urged to the respected
readers to make Duaa so that Allaah Almighty
will turn the hearts of the well-off people
towards the needs of this institution and hence
the completion of the purchasement of land
and construction work would become easy.
May Allaah Almighty give Taufeeq.

Making More than Money

By: Hazrat Maulana Ilyaas Patel Saheb

The sound of a cash register in full swing

is coveted by the store owner, while the sight
of a full waiting room pleases the doctor.
Likewise, a long line of cars pleases the car-
wash owner and the start of the new school
year pleases the stationer. The common factor
is that all these aspects signal that money is
being made!
Making Money
The task of making money is one which
people generally attach tremendous
importance to and thus the sight of their
money machine in motion causes them great
delight. Furthermore, they leave no stone
unturned in making money. Whether working
from 8 until late, 7 days a week, in order to
progress from small-store owner to
entrepreneur at the helm of an economical
empire, or studying for years to acquire a
string of degrees that will equate half the
7 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

alphabet hanging onto ones name. It is

apparent that we have made more than the
required effort in seeing to our material needs.
Making a Life
While many of us have excelled at
making money, to the extent that we have
apparently secured not only our own financial
future but also those of many generations to
come, we have to realize that money is
nothing more than a means to an end. The
end and goal, in our case, is the goal of
making a life of Deen which will secure us
success in this world and in the Hereafter. If
we lose focus of this goal and instead regard
making money to be the goal in life, we will
make money but at the unaffordable
expense of breaking our peace, happiness,
family and most of all, our Deen.
Making a Home
While making money should not be the
focus of our lives, what we truly need to invest
in is making our homes. Though the physical
structure undoubtedly stands above us,
shielding us from the elements, it is the Deeni
environment within the home that needs to be
built in order for the inhabitants of the home
8 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

to be shielded from the elements of sin and

haraam. Just as a business will not make it if
the boss is not at the wheel, the environment
of the home will not be made if the heads of
the household the parents are not
dedicated to this cause and do not devote
themselves to it. In this regard, it is leading by
practical example that proves to be the most
effective.
The parents need to sit with their
children, daily, and all should engage in the
recitation of the Quraaan Majeed, even if it be
for just a few minutes, and even if the children
have already recited the Quraaan Majeed in
madrasah. Together with this, some zikr
should be made, collective duaa can be made
and taleem of Fazaail-e-Amaal should be
conducted.
While the above serves to form an
organized method of creating the environment
of Deen, we need to go a step further and
ensure that our behaviour, at all times, is one
that sets the standard of Deen. If we have
double standards, by practicing Islam in the
musjid but abandoning its pristine teachings in
the business place or while on holiday, our
9 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

children will realize it and begin to behave in

the same way. Thereafter, when we see them
go astray and find that our advice and
warnings fall on deaf ears, we will have
nobody to blame but ourselves.
Making Imaan

Another aspect that requires urgent

attention is that of making and building the
imaani defenses of our children. We live in an
age and era wherein almost every billboard we
see, every piece of literature we read and
every place we visit will contain some factor or
another that attacks the ethos, spirit and
beliefs of Islam. In the face of this heavy
onslaught on imaan, the only way to
effectively inoculate our children is to see to
it that they receive adequate grounding in
Islamic education. The key to this is that
together with creating the environment of
Deen within the home, we enroll them in a
maktab (elementary madrasah) where the
effort will be made to firmly embed the roots
of Islam within them.
Making Our Relationship with Allah Taala

We have built our modes of

communication to the point where the mere
10 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

swipe of a finger or even simple voice input

is all it takes for one person to connect with
the next. However, in the process, we have
broken our relationship with Allah Taala and
thus communicate with everyone but Him. Due
to not building our relationship with our Most
Merciful and Compassionate Creator, Sustainer
and Benefactor Allah Taala our lives are
empty. To make our life, we must make true
contact with Allah Taala by submitting
ourselves in total obedience to Him.
Allah Taala states in the Quraan Majeed:
And whoever does good deeds, whether male
or female, and he has imaan, then We will
bless him with a good life. (Surah Nahl,
v97)Hence, we understand that it is not
making money or taking a break that will give
us happiness. In fact, in many instances, the
exact opposite is true, as suicide is more
prevalent and rife in the circles of the rich and
wealthy. The key to building a good life, in
every sense of the term, is to build our broken
relationship with Allah Taala.
If we build our Deen, Allah Taala, who
has complete control over everything, will
build both our dunya and Aakhirah for us.

TAFSEER
(Commentary of the Holy Quran)
By: Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Shafi Sahib (Rahmatullahi Alaihi)

SURAH AL-BAQARAH
Note: This part of Tafseer is the remaining portion of
Surah Al-Baqarah Tafseer and hence connected with
the previous chapter of Surah Al-Baqarah Tafseer.

Verse 104

o
O those who believe, do not say Raina
but say Unzurna, and listen. And for the
unbelievers there is a grievous
punishment. (Verse 104)

Among other perversities, some of the

Jews invented a new mischief. When they
presented themselves before the Holy Prophet
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, they would address
him with the word Raina, which, in Arabic,
means be mindful of us, but is, in Hebrew, a
curse. The latter is what they intended, but
the Arabs, not knowing Hebrew, could not see
the point, and some Muslims too, with the
Arabic sense of the word in mind, began to
12 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

address the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi

Wasallam in the same manner to the great glee
of the Jews who had thus found a way of
insulting him openly, and had even tricked the
Muslims into joining them. In order to
frustrate the design of the Jews, the Holy
Quran commands the Muslims to use the word
Unzurna instead of Raina, for the meanings of
the two words are the same in Arabic. The
verse also announces a dire punishment to the
Jews for showing disrespect to the Holy
Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and for
trying to be clever with him.
The verse describes the insolent Jews as
Kaafirin (Infidels), which means that being
intentionally disrespectful towards a prophet
even in an indirect manner constitutes
infidelity.
The verse shows that if a perfectly
legitimate action on ones part provides room
for others to commit illegitimate actions, even
the legitimate action no longer remains lawful
for one. For example, if a permissible action
on the part a scholar is likely to lead the
ignorant into error and to induce them to do
impermissible things, that permissible action
will then become forbidden for him, provided
that the action concerned is not essential
according to the Shariah and is not included
13 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

among its objects. The Holy Quran and the

Hadith provide many instances of this nature.
For example, before the advent of Islam the
Quraysh had, in rebuilding the Kabah, made
certain modifications in the design set by
Sayyidna Ibrahim (Abraham Alaihi Salaam). A
hadith reports that the Holy Prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam wished to demolish the present
structure, and to build it again according to
the Abrahamic pattern, but he did not do so,
for such an action could have led ignorant
people into misunderstanding and error.
In the vocabulary of the Principals of
Islamic Jurisprudence, such injunctions are
described as Sadd al-Dharai: removing the
means (to error), and are accepted by all the
jurists - those of the Hanbali school being very
particular about them. (Qurtubi)
Verse 105

o
Those who disbelieve from among the
people of the Book, or idolaters, do not
like that any good should come to you
from your Lord. But Allah chooses for His
grace whom He wills. And Allah is the Lord
of great Bounty. (Verse 105)
14 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

The previous verse told us how the Jews

behaved towards the Holy Prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasalam; the present verse speaks of
their behaviour towards Muslims in general.
Some of the Jews used to assure the Muslims
of their sincerity towards them, and to pretend
that they would very much have liked the
Muslims to have received from Allah religious
doctrines and commandments superior to what
they themselves had received, so that they too
could accept them, but unfortunately Islam did
not seem to be a better religion. The Holy
Quran refutes their claim to be the well-
wishers of the Muslims, and declares that the
infidels, whether they be the Jews or the
associators, are so jealous of Muslims that
they can never like the idea of their receiving
from Allah any kind of blessing whatsoever. Of
course, this jealousy can do no harm to the
Muslims, for Allah is Beneficent and All-
Powerful, and can shower his special blessings
on whomhsoever He chooses.
These Jews used to make two claims
firstly, that Judaism was a better religion than
Islam; secondly, that they were the well-
wishers of the Muslims. They could not
establish the first of these claims on the basis
of any valid argument, and it remained an
empty assertion. Moreover, the difference
15 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

between Islam and Judaism does not primarily

depend on the question of one being better
than the other. For, when something new
comes to abrogate something older, the latter
is automatically given up- and Allah has sent
Islam to abrogate all the earlier religions. The
fact being so obvious, the Holy Quran says
nothing in refutation of the first claim, and
takes up only the second. The mushrikin
(associators) have been mentioned here along
with the Jews for the sake of emphasis, and to
point out that Jews cannot be the well-wishers
of Muslims any more than mushrikeen can
the two being alike in their hatred of Muslims.
Verses 106-107

o
Whenever we abrogate a verse or cause it
to be forgotten, we bring one better than
it or one equal to it. Do you not know that
Allah is powerful over everything? Do you
not know that to Allah alone belongs the
kingdom of the heavens and the earth?
And, you have none, other than Allah, to
protect or help you. (Verses 106-107)
At first, Muslims used to pray with their
faces turned towards the Baytul-Maqdis at
Jerusalem; later on, Allah commanded them to
16 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

turn towards the Kabah. Similarly, certain other

injunctions were abrogated altogether, or
replaced by others. This provided the Jews and
some of the associators too with an occasion to
taunt the Muslims, and to say that such changes
were made by the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Waslam himself and not by Allah. Their purpose
was to sow the seed of doubt in the mind of the
Muslims with regard to the Holy Quran being a
book revealed by Allah. They used to argue that
if everything that Allah revealed was good, as
the Muslims affirmed, why should one injunction
be replaced by another? For, it would only mean
that one of the two injunctions must be good,
and the other evil, but no divine revelation can
possibly be evil. Putting these two premises
together, the Jews tried to draw the conclusion
that the Holy Quran could not be a revealed
book.
The present verse refutes this line of
argument, and, in effect, points out that
abrogation does not mean replacing good with
evil, or vice versa, which should imply the
possibility of the presence of evil in divine
revelation, but that everything that Allah
reveals to His prophets is good, and that what
has been abrogated is good as much as what
abrogated it.
The verse declares that if Allah chooses to
17 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

abrogate an injunction contained in a certain

verse, while retaining the verse itself as a part
of the Holy Quran, or chooses to remove a
verse from the memories of men altogether,
there is nothing objectionable in it, for Allah
alone knows the wisdom that lies in His choice,
and He makes these changes for the good of
men, In fact, He always sends another verse
or injunction better than, or at least equal to,
what He has abrogated. Allah being
omnipotent and omniscient, He possesses the
authority to change His commandments as He
likes, and He also knows what is good for men
at a particular time, and makes these changes
according to this knowledge. Men have no
friend or helper except Allah. As friend, Allah
keeps their good in view while laying down
injunctions. As helper, He protects those who
obey His commandments against the hostility
of their foes but if the obedient are to
receive blessings in the other world greater
than the harm they have to suffer in this
world, the apparent domination of their foes
does not really matter.

What is Nask? (Abrogation)

Verse 106 speaks of Allah abrogating
certain verses, or making men forget certain
others. The first phrase of the verse thus
18 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

covers all the possible forms in which a verse

of the Quran can be abrogated. The Arabic
word in the text is Naskh, which has two
lexical meanings (1) to write, and (2) to
abolish, to repeal. According to the consensus
of all the commentators, the word has been
employed in this verse in the second sense
that is, the repeal or abrogation of an
injunction. So, in the terminology of the Holy
Quran and the Hadith, Naskh signifies the
promulgation of an injunction in place of
another whether the later injunction merely
consists in the repeal of the earlier or,
substitutes a new regulation in its place. The
other form of Naskh mentioned in this verse is
that sometimes Allah made the Holy Prophet
Sallallahu Alaihi Waslam and the blessed
Companions forget a certain verse altogether.
The commentators have cited several
instances of this kind of Naskh, and the
purpose in such cases has usually been to
repeal a certain regulation.

The kinds of abrogation

Making laws and repealing them to
promulgate new ones in their stead is a
regular and well-known practice in human
governments and institutions. But in the case
19 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

of man-made laws abrogation takes place

sometimes because the law-makers do not
understand the situation properly while
making a certain law, and have to change it
when they realize their mistakes, and
sometimes because when a law is
promulgated, it is in accord with the prevailing
situation, but when quite unforeseen changes
alter the situation, the law too has to be
changed. But these two forms of abrogation
are out of the question in the case of divine
injunctions.
There is, however, a third form too. The
lawmaker makes a law, knowing fully well that
the circumstances are going to change in such
a way that the law will no longer be suitable
for the new situation; so, when the situation
changes as he already knew, he changes the
law too, and promulgates a new one which he
had thought of at the very start. For example,
a physician prescribes a medicine for a patient
in view of his present conditions, but he knows
that when the patient has been using it for two
days, his condition will change and require a
new medicine- with this realization, he
prescribes a medicine suitable for that day,
but two days later, when circumstances have
changed, he prescribes a new one. The
physician can easily give the patient written
20 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

instructions for the whole course of the

treatment, with all the changes in the
medicines duly indicated. But this would be
putting too much burden on the already feeble
patient, and would be putting too much
burden on the already feeble patient, and
there would also be the danger of some harm
through a possible error or misunderstanding.
This is the only form of abrogation which
can occur, and has been occurring in divine
injunctions and in divine books. Every new
Shariah and every new revealed Book has
been abrogating many injunctions of the
earlier Shariah and of the earlier Book.
Similarly, within the same Shariah, too, it had
always happened that a certain law was in
force for a time, but Divine Wisdom chose to
abrogate it and to promulgate another in its
place. A hadith reported by Muslim says:
There had never been a prophethood which
did not abrogate some injunctions. This is a
principal which it should not be difficult to
understand. It was only some malicious and
ignorant Jews who confused the divine
abrogation of injunctions with the two forms of
the repeal of man-made laws, and began, in
their impudence, to taunt the Holy Prophet
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasalam in reply to which, as
we have said, these two verses were revealed.
21 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

(Ibn Jarir, Ibn Kathir etc.)

As for the Muslims, it was probably in their
desire to avoid giving occasion to the enemies
of Islam for such taunts that some from
among the Mutazilah tried to explain away the
whole question of Nask. Logically speaking,
there is a possibility so ran their argument
of abrogation in the case of divine injunctions,
and the possibility cannot be denied on any
rational ground, but abrogation has not
actually occurred in the Holy Quran, and there
is no Verse in the Holy Book which abrogates
another (Nasikh) and no verse which had been
abrogated (Munsukh). This view is attributed
to Abu Muslim al-Isfahani but the Ulama in
general have always rejected this opinion, and
refuted the argument. Thus, we read in Ruh
al-Maani.

The people belonging to all the Shariahs are

unanimous in accepting the validity of
abrogation and its actual occurrence both.
Only the Jews with the exception of their
Isawiyyah sect have denied the possibility of
abrogation, and Abu Muslim Al-Isfahani has
denied its occurrence, for he says that it is
22 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

rationally possible, but has not actually taken

place.

Imam Al-Qurtubi says:

It is essential to understand the question of

abrogation, and great benefits flow from such
an understanding, which no scholar can
dispense with, and no one can deny abrogation
except the ignorant and the dull-headed.

In this connection, al-Qurtubi had related a

very illuminating incident. The fourth Khalifah
Sayyidna Hazrat Ali Raziyallah Anhu saw a man
preaching in the mosque. He asked the people
what the man was doing, on being told that he
was preaching, the blessed Khalifah said: He
is not doing anything of the sort, but only
announcing to the people that he is such and
such a man and the son of such and such, and
asking them to recognize and remember him.
Calling the man to his side, he asked: Do you
know the injunctions which have been
abrogated and those which have abrogated
the earlier ones? When he confessed that he
did not, the Khalifah turned him out of the
mosque, and ordered him never to preach
there.

Tas-heelul Ahadeeth

Translation:
Sayyidina Abu Zarr Raziyallahu Anhu
relates that Hazrat Rasullullah Sullallahu Alaihi
Wasallam said: Do not consider any good deed
as insignificant: not even meeting your brother
with a cheerful face. (Muslim)

Commentary:
Hazrat Rasullullah Sullallahu Alaihi Wasallam
is reminding us that no good deed goes
unnoticed in the court of Allah Taala, not even
the smallest good deed, is insignificant. Thus,
merely smiling at your brother or greeting him
with a pleasant face is also a good deed and a
means of earning reward from Allah Taala.
The lesson of this Hadith is also found in the
Ayah: Certainly Allah Taala does not waste
the reward of the good-doers.
24 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Lesson
To do good deeds abundantly even
though people regard it as insignificant.

Translation:

Certainly Allah Ta,ala neither looks at

your bodies nor at your appearances, but He
does look at your hearts and your actions.
(Muslim)

Commentary:

The meaning of this Hadith is that

success in the Hereafter (salvation from
Jahannam and entry into Jannah) does not
depend on our physical bodies and
appearances. Rather, eternal success depends
on our hearts and our actions i.e. whether we
are sincere of not and whether our actions are
in conformity with the Quran and Sunnah or
not.
25 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Some people argue on the basis of this

Hadith that there is no real need for women to
observe Hijab or for men to keep beards
because Allah Taala does not look at our
appearances. Their argument, however, is
incorrect because observing Hijab, keeping
beards etc, are part of our actions and not our
appearances. The meaning of Allah Taalas not
looking at our appearances is that He will not
consider the colour of our skins or the beauty
of our faces etc.

Lesson
Our salvation in the Hereafter lies in
piety, and not in who we are and what we are.

Translation:
Sayyidina Abu Hurairah Raziyallahu anhu
relates that Hazrat Rasullullah Sullallahu Alaihi
26 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Wasallam said: A person who calls people

towards doing good deeds will get the same
reward as those who follow him and do good;
and nothing will be diminished from the
requital of the latter. Similarly those, who call
the people towards vice will have the same
punishment as those who follow him without
any decrease in the punishment of the
perpetrators. (Muslim)

Commentary:

This Hadith highlights the virtue of those

who lead others in good deeds just as it also
highlights the sin of those who lead others in
sin and disobedience. The meaning of the
Hadith is that when a person starts doing a
good deed and others follow his example, he
will be rewarded for his own action as well as
the actions of those who followed him but, at
the same time, this will not reduce the reward
of those who followed him.

Similarly, when a person starts doing

something evil and others follow his example,
he will receive the sin of his own actions as
well as the sin of all those people who followed
27 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

him. Here too, although the initiator will

receive the sin of all those who followed him,
their punishment and sin will not be reduced.

Lesson

This Hadith is therefore encouraging us

to be leaders in good (i.e. to invite people
towards obeying Allah and His Rasullullah
Sullallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and it is discouraging
us from sin and being leaders in sin.

Translation:

It is narrated from Sayyidina Abu

Hurairah Raziyallahu Anhu that Hazrat Rasullullah
Sullallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: You will not enter
Jannah unless you bring Imaan, and you will
not have Imaan unless you love each other.
Should I not show you something that if you
do it, you will love each other? Spread Salaam
amongst yourselves.
28 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Commentary:

Hazrat Rasullullah Sullallahu Alaihi Wasallam

informed us that entrance into Jannah without
Imaan is impossible, and the attainment of
Imaan without love for each other is also
impossible. He therefore showed us a very
effective method for inculcating mutual love;
i.e. to make Salaam common amongst
ourselves (to make salaam whenever we
meet). Salaam creates love because when a
person greets with salaam he is making dua to
Allah Taala to shower mercy on the person
that he is greeting. (Salaam means peace and
mercy.)

Lessons

Greet fellow Muslims by saying

Assalaamu Alaikum as this will create love
and unity in the Ummah.

Translation:

It is narrated from Sayyidina Abu

Hurairah Raziyallahu Anhu that Hazrat Rasullullah
Sullallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: Among the signs
of the beauty of a mans Islam is his avoiding
such things that do not concern him. (Tirmizi)

Commentary:

Discussing the qualities of the Muttaqeen

(Allah-fearing servants), Allah Taala says that
they are those who avoid all futilities.
In a similar manner this Hadith tells us
that the sign of a perfect Muslim is that he
does not engage himself in anything that does
not concern him.
Gossip and rumour mongering are
among the favorite pass times of society. This
Hadith should serve as a deterrent from such
evil habits.

Lessons

To avoid all those things in which there is

no Deeni or worldly benefit.

Seerat-e-Paak
Seeratul Mustafa Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
By: Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Idrees Kaandhelwi
Sahib Rahmatullahi Alaihi
Translated By: Mufti Muhammad Kadwa Sahib and
Maulana Muhammad Mahommedy Sahib

When the rule of Makkah fell onto the

shoulders of Abdul Muttalib and the divine will
of Allah Taala decreed that the well which had
been totally forgotten should now be
disclosed, by means of pious dreams Abdul
Muttalib was directed to dig up the area of the
well. Distinguishing markings and distinctive
clues pointing out the whereabouts of the well
were also revealed to him in the dream. Abdul
Muttalib himself says: I was once asleep in
the Hateem area when a person came up to
me in a dream and instructed: Dig up
Barrah. As I enquired, What is Barrah? He
departed. On the second day I was sleeping on
the same spot when the same man again
directed me in my dream: Go and dig up all
Madnunah. When I asked him: What is Al-
Madnunah? he went away. On the third day I
31 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

was sleeping at the same spot when he again

appeared in my dream and commanded: Go
and dig up Tayyibah. As I enquired what
Tayyibah is, he once again headed off. On the
fourth day, he ordered me: Go and dig up
Zam Zam. Again I asked: What is Zam
Zam? Upon this he replied: It is a well whose
water never runs dry nor decreases in volume
and it provides countless number of pilgrims
with drinking water. He then went on to point
out of few distinctive clues precisely indicating
where I should dig.
The recurring nature of the dream
coupled with a detailed location of the area
convinced Abdul Muttalib that this is a true
dream. Abdul Muttalib informed the Quraysh
of his dream and informed them of his decision
to dig up a certain point of the Haram. The
Quraysh opposed him but he could not be
bothered with their resistance. Hoisting his
pick and shovel, he set out with his son Haaris
and commenced digging at the designated
spot. Abdul Muttalib would go on burrowing
whilst Haaris would scoop up and dispose of
the sand. On the third day, he came across a
deep hole. Out of extreme delight, he burst
out chanting Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar! He
32 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

then happily remarked:

This is evidently the well of Ismaaeel.

Abdul Muttalib thereafter constructed a
few ponds close to the well of Zam Zam. He
would fill these with Zam Zam water and
readily provide it to the pilgrims. However,
during the hours of darkness, some
distressingly jealous people would maliciously
cause damage to these ponds. Abdul Muttalib
would then repair the damage early the next
morning. Upset with such recurrent nasty acts,
Abdul Muttalib implored Allah Taala in dua.
He was divinely instructed in a dream to recite
the following dua:

O Allah! I do not render the

water of Zam Zam Halaal for
bathing but it is permitted
only for drinking purposes.
The very next morning, Abdul Muttalib
publicly announced this verdict. Thereafter,
whoever attempted to damage any of the
ponds, would indeed fall prey to some ailment
or the other. When such woeful incidents of
misfortune multiplied, the jealous people
stopped damaging the ponds.

Abdul Muttalibs vow

Whilst in the process of excavating
through the earth to get to the well of Zam
Zam, besides his only son Haaris, Abdul
Muttalib had no other assistant to lend a hand.
This is why he took an oath to the effect that if
Allah Taala blesses him with ten sons who
would grow up to be his helping hands, he
would slaughter one of them in the name of
the Allah.
When Allah Taala fulfilled this cherished
aspiration by granting him ten sons, he was
fast asleep one night in front of the Kabah
when he saw a vision of a person instructing
him:

O Abdul Muttalib! Fulfil your

vow that you had pledged for
the Lord of this sacred
house.
On awakening from this dream, Abdul
Muttalib summoned all his sons and revealed
his vow and subsequent dream to them. With
one voice they all submitted:

Fulfill your vow and do as you please.

Abdul Muttalib drew lots for all his sons

and Abdullah, his most beloved sons name
came up in the draw. He grasped Abdullahs
hand and proceeded with a knife towards the
sacrificial quarters. When abdullahs sister
witnessed this distressing sight, they were
moved to weeping in anguish. One of them
pleaded with the father to draw another lot
with ten camels against. Abdullahs name. If
the lot is drawn in favour of the ten camels,
slaughter the camels but we implore you to
leave Abdullah alone. At that time, ten camels
was the blood money paid to a murdered
victims family. When he drew lots a second
time, Abdullahs name came up again. Abdul
Mutallib added on ten camels and drew lots
again. Once more, Abdullahs name came up.
Abdul Muttalib continued adding ten camels,
each time he drew lots but on every occasion
Abdullahs name came up. When he eventually
reached a hundred camels, he was spared
when finally the camels name came up. At that
instant Abdul Muttalib and the bystanders
cried out in delight: Allahu Akbar. Abdullahs
sister carried him away from there and abdul
Muttalib slaughtered his hundred camels
between mounts Safa and Marwah.
35 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Hazrat Ibn Abbaas Raziyallahu Anhu says

that initially, ten camels made up the blood
money paid to a murdered victims family.
Amongst the Quraysh and other Arabs, Abdul
Muttalib initiated the tradition of paying one
hundred camels instead of the customary ten
camels as blood money. Hazrat Rasulullah
Sallallahu alaihi wasallam also maintained this
Sunnah in islam. Following this incident,
Abdullah was described with the title of
Zabeeh (the sacrificed or slaughtered one).
This is the reason Hazrat Rasulullah Sallallahu
alaihi wasallam was referred to as Ibnuz
Zabeehain (the son of two Zabeehs).
Hazrat Muaawiyah Raziyallaahu Anhu
says that he was once in the bledded company
of Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam when
a Bedoiun addressed Rasulullah Sallallahu
alaihi wasallamas O son of the two Zabeehs!
Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallammerely
smiled at him.
After narrating this incident, one of the
attendees asked whom the two Zabeehs were.
In reponse, Hazrat Muaawiyah Raziyallahu
anhum went on to recount this incident of
Abdullah and said: One was Abdullah whilst
the other was Ismaaeel Alaihi Salaam.
36 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Allaamah Zarqaani Rahmatullahi Alaihi says

that whenever the Quraysh were afflicted by
severe drought, they would take Abdul
Muttalib to Mont Thabir. With his blessed
Presence they would then beg Allah Taala for
rain. Time and again the Quraysh solved their
problems with the Barakah (sanctified
presence or blessings) of Abdul Muttalib.
His position and condition were
immensely different from the conditions of the
other Arabs at large. He would strongly
prevent his children from any form of injustice
and immorality. He would encourage them to
adopt good character and shun evil behaviour.
Abdul Muttalib would insist on fulfilling all
vows. He forbade marriage between the
Mahaarim (like marrying ones sister, aunt
etc.) he would restrain people from
intoxicants, adultery, burying the daughters
alive, and from making Tawaaf naked around
the Baitullah. He would encourage amputating
the hand of the thief. These are issues
strongly endorsed by the Quraan and Hadith
as well.
On closer examination of the
aforementioned incidents and conditions it
clearly appears that the closer the term of
37 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Nubuwwat (prophethood) approached, the

more evident became the improvement in
good character, etiquette, blessings, spiritual
light and miraculous feats. This was
remarkably evident in the life of Abdul Muttalib
where on numerous occasions he saw truthful
dreams and true dreams make up the very
inception of prophethood. Whenever he was
confronted with any serious issue, Abdul
Muttalib would be appropriately guided by true
dreams and divine insight.
Hazrat Waasilah bin Asqa Raziyallahu anhu
reports that Hazrat Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi
wasallam said: Allah Taala preferred Banu
Kinaanah from the children of Ismaaeel and
from Banu Kinaanah He choose the Quraysh
and from the Quraysh He favoured Banu
Haashim and from Banu Haashim, He
preferred me.
Hazrat Jibraaeel Alahis Salaam traversed
the earth in search of uncontaminated souls
but since it was an era of spiritual ignorance,
he did not search for outward actions but he
focused on character and capability. In this
aspect, Jibraaeel Alahi Salaam did not find
anyone better than the Arabs in general and
Banu Haasim in particular.
38 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

At that time, in certain spheres, the

Arabs enjoyed such supremacy over the other
nations that none dared to challenge. For
instance:

1. Family Lineage: The Arabs were so

particular about family lineage that let
alone humans they would even keep in
memory a record of the lineage of their
horses. They would even retain such
(seemingly mundane) information as to
who was born out of a free woman and
who was mothered by a slave woman,
who drank the milk of a noble woman
and who was suckled by a despicable
woman. This is evident from Hazrat
Salamah bin Akwas Raziyallah Anhu
fiery statement he made on the
battlefield when he declared: I am the
son of Akwa and todays battle will attest
who was nourished by a free woman and
who was nursed by a slave woman. A
poet of pre-Islamic times says:

If i was of the Maazin tribe, the children of a

foster woman attributed to Zuhal Bin
39 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Shaybaan would not have outsmarted my

camel.

As a form of ridicule, the poet refers to

them as the children of an orphan. In other
words, they are not the children of a noble
woman but the children of an orphan who was
abandoned on the roadside.
2. Valour and heroism: The influence of
their valour was that whilst the Romans
or Persians reduced the rest of the world
to subjugation or bondage, the Arabs in
spite in their modest material
possessions were not intimidated into
imperial subjugation. Their spirit of
determination was such that the most
pitiable destitute would not be left
awestruck whilst conversing with the
greatest of emperors.
3. Generosity and selflessness: They
were so big-hearted that they would not
hesitate to slaughter a healthy camel in
honour of an unexpected guest. They
were eagerly prepared to remain hungry
but it was just about impossible for the
guest to go hungry.

Blessed Companions

Raziyallahu Taala Anhum Ajmaeen
By: Shaikhul-Hadeeth Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya Sb.
Rahmatullahi-Alaihi

Also among those left behind were such

persons who could neither arrange conveyance
for themselves, nor was Hazrat Nabi Akram
Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam able to provide them
with any. It is about such people that Allah
says in his Book:

They turned back with eyes flowing with

tears in sorrow that they could not find
means to spend. (9:92)

Of the true believers, those who stayed

behind without any excuse whatsoever were
three in number. Their story would be
presently related. On their way to Syria, when
the expedition reached the habitation of
Thamud, Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih
Wasallam covered his face with a piece of
cloth and quickened the pace of his camel. He
also instructed the Sahaabah Raziyallahu
41 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Anhum to do the same, since that was the

scene of Thamuds destruction. They were
advised to pass there weeping and fearing lest
Allah Taala should punish them as he had
punished the Thamud.
The dearest and the most beloved Nabi
of Allah and his privileged companions pass by
the ruins of the punished people in fear and
tears, lest they meet the same fate. On the
other hand today, if any place is struck with an
earthquake, it becomes a place of sightseeing
for us and, if we come across any ruins, our
eyes remain dry and our hearts unaffected.
What a change of attitude!

Hazrat Kaabs Raziyallahu Anhu failure to

join the Battle of Tabuk

Together with the Munaafiqin who did not

join in The Battle of Tabuk, there were more
than eighty people from the Ansaar and an
equal number from amongst the nomadic
Arabs and a large number from the strangers.
They themselves did not go and they
encouraged others not to go as well.

Dont go in the heat.

42 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Allahs (reply to this was:)

Say, the fire of Jahannum is of more intense

heat.

From amongst the Sahaabah, there were

only three people who failed to join Hazrat
Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam. They
were Muraarah bin Rabi, Hilal bin Umayyah
and Kaab bin Malik Raziyallahu Anhum
Ajmaeen. Muraarah Raziyallahu Anhu had
orchards of dates, laden with fruit. He
convinced himself to stay behind saying:

I have taken part in all the battles so far.

What possible harm would befall the Muslims,
if I miss this one?

He feared the loss of the entire crop in

his absence and this prevented him from going
out. But when he realised his mistake, he gave
away in charity the whole crop and garden
also which had caused him to stay behind.
Hazrat Hilals Raziyallahu Anhu case was
different. Some of his family, who had been
away for a long time, had just returned to
Madinah. It was for their sake that he did not
43 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

join the battle. He had also participated in all

the battles previously and thought (like
Murrarah Raziyallahu Anhu) that it would not
matter much if he missed just that one battle.
When he came to know of the seriousness of
his mistake, he made up his mind to cut off all
his connections with those relatives who had
been the cause of this mistake. Hazrat Kaab
Raziyallahu Anhu himself explains his story in
derail, which is quoted in all books of Hadith.

He says: I had never been so well off

financially as I was at the time of Tabuk. I had
two she camels of my own which I never
owned before. It was the habit of Hazrat Nabi
Akram Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam that he never
disclosed the destination of his battles, but he
would keep on asking about the conditions
elsewhere.

But this time in view of the distance, the

hot season and the strength of the enemy, he
had declared his destination, so that proper
preparations could be made. The number of
the participants was so large that it was
difficult to note down their names even, so
44 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

much so, that those who were absent could

hardly be noticed in the large crowd.

The gardens of Madianah were full of

fruit. I intended every morning to make
preparation for the journey, but somehow or
the other, the days passed by and I made no
progress. I was satisfied that I had all the
necessary means at my disposal and that I
would be ready in no time if I did once decide
to do so.

I was still not yet decided when I learnt

that Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih
Wasallam had left with his companions. The
ides still played in my mind that I would take a
day or two to get ready and overtake the
group. This delay continued till the time for
Hazrat Nabi Akrams Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam
arrival in Tabuk drew very near. I then tried to
get ready but again, but somehow or the
other, I did not do so. Now, when I came to
look at the people left behind, I realised that
there was no one in Madinah except those who
had been condemned as Munaafiqeen or had
been specially allowed to stay behind for
certain reasons.
45 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

On reaching Tabuk, Hazrat Nabi Akram

Sallallahu Alaih wasallam inquired How is it
that I do not see Kaab? Somebody said, O,
Nabi of Allah Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam: His
pride in wealth and ease has caused him to
stay behind. Hazrat Maaz Raziyallahu Anhu
interrupted and said: No, this is wrong. As far
as our knowledge goes, he is a true Muslim.
However, Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam kept quiet.

Hazrat Kaab Raziyallahu Anhu says: After a

few days I heard the news of Hazrat Nabi
Akrams Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam return. I
was struck with grief and remorse. One after
the other, good excuses entered my mind and
I was sure that I could escape Hazrat Nabi
Akrams Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam wrath with
one of them for the time being, and later on
pray for Allahs forgiveness. I also sought the
advice of the wise men of my family in this
matter.

But when I knew that Hazrat Nabi Akram

Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam had actually
returned, I was convinced that nothing but the
truth would save me. So I decided to speak
46 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

out the plain truth.

It was the noble habit of Hazrat Nabi
Akram Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam that
whenever he returned from a journey, he
would first go to the Masjid and perform two
rakaats (Tahitul Masjid) and then stay there
for a while to meet visitors. As he sat in the
Masjid, the Munaafiqeen came and gave their
excuses taking oaths as to why they did not
accompany him on the battle. He accepted
their excuses entrusting the matter to Allah.
Just then I came and greeted him with
Salaam.
He turned his face with a scornful smile.
I begged him with the words: O Nabi of Allah
Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam! You turn your face
from me. By Allah! Neither am I a
Munaafiqeen, not do I have the least doubt in
my Imaan. He asked me to come near and I
did so.
He then asked me: What prevented you
from coming with me? Had you not purchased
the she camels? I replied: O, Nabi of Allah
Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam, If I were dealing
with worldly man, then I am sure that I would
escape his displeasure through (seemingly)
47 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

reasonable excuses, for Allah has gifted me

with the gift of speech. But in your case, I am
sure that if I make a false statement, Allah
would be displeased with me. On the other
hand, I am sure that if I displease you by
confessing the simple truth, then Allah would
very soon make you happy with me. I,
therefore, will speak the truth. By Allah! I had
no excuse at all.
I had never been so well to do as I was
at that time. Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu
Alaih Wasallam remarked: He is speaking the
truth. He then said to me: You go away, Allah
will decide about you. When I left the masjid,
many people from my clan blamed me and
scolded me saying, Never before had you
committed any wrong. If after making some
good excuse for once, you had requested
Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam
to make dua for your goodness, surely his dua
would have been sufficient for you. I asked
them if there were any more people like me.
They informed me that there were two other
persons viz. Hilaal bin Ummayah Raziyallahu
Anhu and Muraarah bin Rabi Raziyallahu Anhu
who also had admitted their faults like me and
received the same reply from Hazrat Nabi

Preservation and compilation of ahadith

Allah Taala mentions regarding the deen

that He has bestowed us:

(Today I have perfected your deen and I have

completed My bounty upon you.) [5:3]

What kind of deficiency can there be in a

deen that Allah Taala has perfected.
Therefore, this ummat has been able to
protect its deen to the extent that even the
practices of Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih
Wasallam were preserved. In the past, the
ahadith were not preserved in book-form
having different chapters and sections as we
have it nowadays. Instead, whatever Hazrat
Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam had
49 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

mentioned was preserved either by writing or

by memorising. It was compiled in such a
manner that no information was left out.

Sahaabah propagating the

ahaadith

Every week, Hazrat Tameen Daari

Raziyallahu Anhu used to stand up in Masjid-
un-Nabawi and explain the ahadith of Hazrat
Nabi Akram Sallallahu ALaih Wasallam.
Hazrat Abu Hurairah Raziyallahu Anhu
used to place his hand on the Rumaanah
mimbar and say:

(I heard the inmate of this blessed grave saying

this.)
Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood Raziyallahu
Anhu used to conduct lessons at his home
weekly and explain the ahadith of Hazrat Nabi
Akram Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam. In this
manner, the Sahaabah Raziyallu Anhum had
passed on the ahadith of Hazrat Nabi Akram
Sallallahu ALaih Wasallam.
Hazrat Sad bin Abi Waqqas Raziyallahu
Anhu had written to Hazrat Umar Raziyallahu
Anhu requesting him to send Hazrat Abdullah
50 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

ibn Masood Raziyallahu Anhu over to Kufa,

because there was a need for him there.
Hazrat Umar Raziyallahu Anhu replied that
Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood Raziyallahu Anhu
is a personality who I myself am in need of. I
will however give preference to you over
myself. Subsequently, Hazrat Abdullah bin
Masood Raziyallahu Anhu moved over to Kufa
with one and half thousand stuedents and
began imparting the ahadith of Hazrat
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaih wasallam.
Some sahaabah Raziyallhu Anhum sat in
a masjid imparting the ahadith, some in an
open field and some beneath the shade of a
tree.

The effort made by the muhaddithin in

the field of hadith.

Imam Tabraani had spent two thirds of

his life in the quest of ahadith which was one
of the methods that Allah Taala had used to
protect this deen. The method adopted by him
was that he would attend the lessons of a
Muhaddith and note down all the ahadith
explained without enquiring as to what was its
suitable chapter or its status. Whatever was
51 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

explained would be noted.

The muhadithin who had worked
tirelessly to compile the ahadith had done a
great favour upon us. Later, attention was
paid to another section in the field of hadith
and that was arranging the ahadith into
different chapters. This was done in order that
the ahadith pertaining to a certain topic could
be found under that specific chapter. This
continued until the sihhah-sitaah (the six
famously known authentic books) were
compiled.
Thereafter, more details and information
surfaced. Imaam Tirmizi had compiled the
most details relating to the field of ahadith.
The sequence adopted by him was that he
firstly prepared a caption as a claim. He would
then cite a hadith to prove it. He did not
suffice on the mere hadith, but also related its
chain of narrators together with indicating to
those sahaabah Raziyallhu Anhum who
narrated a similar hadith, irrespective of
whether it was authentic or not. Together with
this, he discussed the different views of the
imaams of fiqh. He then highlights the
narrators who are reliable, weak or authentic.
Therefore, he categorises the ahadeeth into
52 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

their various catagories. In short, Imaam

Tirmizi had compiled the most details relating
to the field of hadith.
The different methods of narrating ahadith
One method of the muhaddithin when
narrating ahadith was that they would say:
(So and so has narrated this hadith
to me and so and so had narrated it to him.)
Another method of narrating was that
which the fuqahaa had adopted and espacially
Imaam Abu Hanifah Rahmaullahu Alaih. If a
masalah was deduced from a hadith, then
instead of saying , he would
present the hadith as fiqhi (juristic) principle.
For example, someone goes to meet a
senior person but is unable to meet him. One
of his attendants will tell the visitor, so and so
has told me that so and so had told him that
you are unable to meet the buzurg now.
On the other hand, another attendant will say,
You cannot meet the buzurg now.
He left out the chain of narrators and
shortened the sentence by saying that you will
be unable to meet the buzurg now.
This is what the fuqahaa have done,
whereas this is also a hadith.

Hazrat Shah Waliyyullah Sahib

Rahmatullahi Alaih has written in Izaalat-u;-
Khafaa: Imaan Abu Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaih
was acquainted with volumes hadith that
cannot be located. One needs to do a bit of
research and fact-finding. One should read
Qudoori and Al-Jaami-us-Sagheer and see that
the masaail presented are actually the
wordings of Hadeeth. For example, one
masalah presented is:

(When one awakens, he should not

immerse his hand into a utensil of water
until he washes it thrice, for he does not
know what his hand had touched during the
night.)

On reading this, one will think it to be a

masala pertaining to washing the hands on
awakening and will not realise that it is a
hadith.
One type of law is the law of Allah Taala
for which there are no chains of narrators.
Similar are these ahadith where no chains of
narrators are mentioned, but rather presented
as fiqhi principles.
Another example is the masalah of:
54 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

(When the imaam comes

out for the Jumuah khutbah no salaah should
be performed nor should there be any
speaking.)
One should remain silent and pay
attention to the khutbah. In actual fact, this is
a hadith that has been recorded in Fath-ul-
Baari on the authorty of Imaam Zuhri.
Similar is the masalah of:
(There is no dowry lesser than
ten dirhams.)
This appears in Fath-ul-Qadeer and Hafiz Ibnu
Hajar has narrated it with a sanad (chain of
narrators). He thereafter commented that this
is not lower that the category of hasan,
whereas this has been presented as a mere
masalah in Hidaayah.
If one has to page through the books of
fiqh, he would find numerous wordings of the
ahaadith although no mention is made of them
being ahaadith.
Imaam Abu Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaih
had understood the outlook of Hazrat Nabi
Akram Sallallahu Alaih wasallam and the
ahaadith, and then presented them as basic
principles.
55 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

The different categories of ahadith

1) Those ahadith that relate to the elements
of faith are the highest category of
ahadith. The chains of narrators of such
ahadith need to be extremely authentic.
This is found in the ahadith compiled by
Imaam Bukhari Rahmatullahi Alaih. Their
chains of narrators are of the highest
rank.
2) Ahadith through which laws are deduced.
It is not a prerequisite for their ahadith
to be in the rank of those in the first
category. Hence, it will be incorrect to
search for only ahadith in the rank of the
category to deduce masaail.
3) Ahadith relating to tafseer (commentary
of the Quraan). Such ahadith can be of a
lower rank than those in the second
category.
4) Ahadith that pertain to fadhaail (virtue
of actions). Thus, ahadith of an even
lower rank are acceptable for fadhaail.
Therefore, the conditions laid down for
the ahadith pertaining to imaaniyaat
(elements of faith) will not be found in
these ahadith.
5) Ahadith pertaining to historical facts. At
times even fabricated ahadith are
quoted. Hence, we find that Allamah

Suyooti Rahmatullahi Alaih has quoted

such ahadith in Husn-ul-Muhaadhra fi
Ikhtiyari Usool-il-Munaazarah that he
himself has classified as fabricated.
Therefore, it is incorrect to lay down the
same set of conditions for all the
categories of Ahadith.
The different methods of acquiring
hadith
There are different factors that lead one to
acquire hadith from someone. The muhadithin
used to prefer acquiring hadith from someone
who had the most students. On the other
hand, the fuqahaa (Jurists) preferred acquiring
hadith from someone who had the greatest
ability of deducing laws from the ahadith. The
expertise the immams of fiqh had in the
science of hadith
The greatest of the four imaams of fiqh is
Imaam Abu Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaih . He
was born in 80 A.H. Imaam Maalik
Rahmatullahi Alaih, is second in rank and he
was born in95 A.H. The third in rank is Imaam
Shaafiee Rahmatullahi Alaih and he was born
during the second century in 150 A.H. Imaam
Ahmad Rahmatullahi Alaih is the fourth in rank
and he was born in 164 A.H. it is incorrect to
disregard any one of them.
57 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Not only were seven to eight sahaabah

alive when Imaam Abu Hanifah Rahmatullahi
Alaih was born but even when he had reached
adulthood. However, the muhadithin are not
prepared to accept him as a Taabiee despite
them accepting Imaam Maalik as a Taabiee
who was boen some fifteen years later. A
Taabiee is one who narrates from a sahaabi.
Imaam Bukhari Rahmatullahi Alaih and
Imaam Nasai are both the students of Imaam
Ahmad Rahmatullahi ALaih who was a student
of Imaam Shaafiee Rahmatullahi Alaihi.
Imaam Shaafiee was a student of Imaam
Maalik Rahmatullahi Alaihi who was a
contemporary of Imaam Abu Hanifah
Rahmatullahi Alaihi.
All the Imaams had a good relationship
with each other. Once Imaam Shaafiee told
Imaam Ahmad, Inform me of any authentic
hadith that you come across so that I may
adopt that as my mazhab.
Imam Shaafiee had mostly paid
attention to the deduction of masaail and
Imaam Ahmad had focused his attention to
the scrutinising of the narrators. Therefore,
Imaam Shaafiee relied on him and requested
him to inform him of the authentic ahaadith he
58 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

came across.
The second point worth considering is
that the one occupied in a specific field would
possess more important points and factors
pertaining to it.The muhadithin were involved
in the scrutinising of the ahaadith day and
night. Their occupation was to verify as to
which hadith is weak and which is authentic,
did a certain narrator meet another narrator or
not, a certain narrator used this word whereas
another narrator had used another word. In
these matters, the decisions made by the
muhaddithin are most reliable.
On the other hand, those luminaries who
were mujtahideen and fuqahaa had deduced
laws from the Quran and hadith. The method
of deducing laws has been passed on from
them. That is why, despite Imaam Tirmizi
having such a great status in the field of
hadith yet he states in Tirmizi Shareef, pg
188: (The fuqahaa possess a
better understanding of the hadith.)
Hence, in matters pertaining to the
verifying and scrutinising of the ahaadith the
views of the muhadithin hold more weight and
in matters pertaining to the deduction of
massail, the views of the fuqahaa hold more

weight. (To be continued, Insha-Allahu-Taala)

Etiquette

Etiquettes for students

Third Etiquette

Further etiquettes regarding respect for

an ustaadh. Include:

Do not speak to your ustaadh without his

permission.
Do not speak to him in a loud voice.
Do not walk ahead of him.
Do not sit in his place.
Make an effort to understand his way of
thinking and act in accordance with this.
If at any time we see that the usttadh is
upset, then at such a time dont question
him. Speak to him on some other
occasion.
Dont call the usttadh out of his room.
Rather wait for him to come out and then
speak to him.(Taleem Mutaallim)

Hazrat Ibn Abbass Raziyallahu Anahu

says, Most of my knowledge was attained from
the Ansaar. I used to wait outside their homes
in the afternoon sun. However, if I wanted, I
could have merely informed them and they
would have come out of their homes
immediately. Rather, I took their comfort into
consideration. Only when they would emerge
from their homes, would I ask them.
Many people have narrated the incident oh
Shaikhul Adab Hazrat Moulana Izaaz Ali
Rahmatullahi Alaihi that whenever he needed
to ask a question to find out something, he
would wait at the door of Allamah Anwar Shah
Kashmiri Rahmatullahi Alaihi. When Hazrat
would come out, then only would he ask. This
was almost a daily occurrence.

Fourth Etiquette

Service for ones Asaatidha

(Teachers)

Every student should regard the service to

his asaatidha as a means of success in both the
worlds.
61 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

With regards to etiquettes for teachers, I

have written that the asaatidha should not take
any Khidmat (Service) from their students. This
is best for them, However, students should not
wait for their ustaadh to tell them what to do.
They should serve the ustaafh themselves and
regard this to e their good fortune.
Those students who serve their asaatidha,
Allah will arrange for their progress in this world
as well as the next. These students will
eventually spread the Deen of Allah resulting in
thousands of Allahs servants attaining
guidance. They appear as stars on the earth.
Their company and influence have such an
effect on the hearts of the people that sinners,
who disobeyed Allah for years, make taubah
and the noor of the marifah intelligence,
solutions to difficult situations become easy.
They become pillars of Deen and are a source of
pride and joy in the heavens and the earth.
Wherever they place their feet, misguidance is
removed and the road to guidance is opened. It
is a common experience that whatever positions
students of Deen have attained, have been a
result of their service and blessings of their
62 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

asaatidha. The honour of a person in Deen and

dunya is the fruit of their duas.
Atika the sister of Hammaad ibn Salamah
Rahmatullahi Alaihi the ustaafh of Imaam Abu
Haneefah Rahmatullahi Alaihi saus that Imaam
Abu Haneefah Rahmatullahi Alaihi used to clean
out the seeds from the cotton at her home. He
used to buy the milk and vegetables and would
do similar chores at her house.
AS stated Hammaad Rahmatullahi Alaihi was
the ustaadh of Imam Abu Haneefa Tahmatullahi
Alaihi. At that time who would have imagined
that the servant in the house of Hammaad
would, one day, be regarded as the master of
the whole world.
The author of Taleemul Mutaallin writes that
I had seen Imaam Fakhrud Deen Rahmatullahi
Alaihi being shown utmost respect by the King
of Muroo. Whilst in his company he would
mention on several occasions. All this
reverence and respect is a result of the service I
rendered to my ustaadh. For thirty years, I
cooked his meals and never once did I partake
of it.
63 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

There is another incident recorded in the

kitaab, Taleemul Mutaallim. Haroon ar Rashid
Rahmatullai Alaihi sent his son to study under
Hazrat Ismaee Rahmatullahi Alaihi. Once, when
Haroon ar Rashid went to visit, he saw the
prince pouring the water for his usttadh to
perform wudhu. Haroon ar Rashid said to Hazrat
Ismaee Rahmatullahi Alaihi, I sent him to you
to acquire knowledge as well as to learn
respect. What respect are you teaching him?
Why dont you rather command him to pour the
water with one hand and wash your feet with
the other hand?
Once, Moulana Anzar Shah Kashmiri
Rahmatullahi Alahi, who is the son of Allamah
Anwar Shah Kashmiri Rahmatullahi Alaihi visited
us at the Mafrasah, He delivered a lecture to the
students and narrated an incident of a Bangali
student who used to serve Moulanas father at
the Madrasah in Dhabel. He was a weak among
the other students who did not exert himself.
He was always regarded as weak among the
other students. However, Allah took mush Deeni
work from him. Presently, e is known as the
Shaikhul Islaam of his area. Moulana says: I
met him when I went for Hajj. He mentioned
64 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

that all of this is the fruit the service rendered

to his usttaadh.
Imaam Abu Yousuf Rahamatullahi Alaihi
always used to make a dua-e-maghfirat for his
ustaadh. He used to say that whenever I
performed any fardh or nafal salaah, I always
made dua for my asaatidha.
There is an incident recorded of Shaikh-ul-
Islaam, Hazrat Sayed Moulana Hasian Ahamd
Madni Saahib Rahmatullahi Alaihi. Once his
ustaadh, Hazrat Shaikhul Hind Moulana
Mahmoodul Hasan Saahib Rahmatullahi Alaihi
received many guests. There was only one toilet
in the house and the visitors were to stay for
several days. Every night Hazrat Madni
Rahmatullahi Alaihi used to clean the toilet and
the visitors would find the toilet clean the next
morning.
Hazrat Maan bin Esa Rahmatullahi alaihi was
a student of Imaam Maalik Rahmatullahi Alaihi.
He was a great Mufti as well as a researcher. He
received this position as result of the sevice he
rendered to his ustaadh. When Imaam Maalik
Rahmatullahi Alaihi became old, he needed the
aid of a stick to lean on. Instead he leaned upon
the shoulders of Maan bin Esa Rahmatullahi Alaihi.
65 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

One of my colleagues Qari Raheem Bakhsh

used to serve my ustaadh Qari Fath Muhammad
Saahib Paani Patti Rahmatullahi Alaihi. He was
extremely intelligent but he did not make much
effort in his studies. In fact, right up to Dawrah-
e-Hadith he did not exert himself as much as
the other students. The end result of serving his
ustaadh however is that today he is a senior
teacher in the Madrasah in Multaan and is the
author of many books.
During our student days in Paani Patt, one of
my friends, Moulana Haafiz Sayed Nimatullah
Saahib used to make abundant Khidmah for his
asaatidha, He never hesitated to di the errands
of his friends and relatives. Since he was young
as well as trustworthy, the womenfolk of the
village would purchase anything they required
from the bazaars via him. The reward of this
khidmat is that Allah is taking work from him,
which many scholars with degrees and
qualifications are unable to do.
It is the great fadhal of Allah upon this
insignificant servant that wherever I went, Allah
blessed me with the opportunity of also
obtaining this great fortune.

A DIVINE INSPIRATION

Hazrat Dawud Tai Rahmatullahi Alaihi

Wasallam says that once Allah Taala sent him
divine inspiration.
O Dawud! If you get rotten vegetables
to eat, do not think about their state. Think
about the fact that when I was distributing
Rizq. You were in my mind!
Allah Taala wants us to be content with
the Rizq that He gives us. For example, a
father brings some gifts home and distributes
them among his children. This results in some
getting better gifts than the others do. If the
child who received the least of all is still happy
with his father, he will be the most beloved in
the sight of his father.
67 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

In the same way, a man has a daughter

who has neither good looks nor intellect. If a
handsome, wealthy and noble man comes and
takes her in marriage, then her father will
obviously be very grateful to him.
Allah Taala is also pleased with the
person who, despite the unfavorable
circumstances, is happy with hir Lord. It says
in a Hadith that a person who, in this world, is
satisfied with whatever little Allah Taala gives
him, on the day of Qayamah, Allah Taala will
be satisfied with just a few good deeds of his.
Therefore, a Mumin is always pleased
with Allah Taala, whatever his circumstanced
are. Circumstances keep on changing, and
problems keep on coming and going.

The sign that a problem is a punishment

One may experience problems in

business, family or health, and as a result,
losses the ability to perform good deeds. For
example, he used to pray his Namaz in the
Masjid, now he prays at home. He used to
pray Nafl Salaah, now he only prays Fard, and
Sunnah Muakkadah. Neither does he sit and
supplicate to Allah Taala, not does he wake up
68 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

for Tahajjud. His heart remains sad and

depressed. This is one sign that the problems
have come as a punishment. The second sign
is that despair begins to settle over the heart.
This is what is known as depression nowadays.
This person experinces contnous fear and
unrest and keeps thinking. What if this
happens? What if that happens?
Our pious elders have stated that,
whether the problem has came to elevate
ones position or as a punishment, in either
case, the abundance of Istghfaar will benefit
him. One shoud plead with Allah Taala and cry
to Him. Allah Taala likes us to humble
ourselves to Him.This is why He continues to
send various problems to us. Our situation
keeps changing. Once a Mumin has achieved
an understanding of this, he can never be
depressed.
The greatest advantage if Imaan to a
Mumin is that problems never cause him
distress. For example, a man lives in a glass
house, and there is a storm blowing
outside. He sees the trees and leaves moving
in the wind, some trees are being uprooted.
Despite all this, he does not get affected. The
state of those who are close to Allah Taala is
69 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

the same. There may be a storm of problems

going on around them, but their hearts are
compeletely at peace. Those around them
think they are very worried, but they are
actually very content.
A storm was roaring around my boat
The world thought I was sinking.
Though one may outwardly feel the
effects of problems, he receives the mercy of
Allah Taala in exchange. Therefore, although a
Mumin may occasionally become worried, he
does not become a victim of distress. His
hearts is at peace with knowledge that
whatever is happening is from his Lord.
A Hadith-e-Qudsi

Allah Taala is very pleased with a person

who is content with His judgement. In a
Hadith, it says that when the Lawh-e-Mahfuz
(preserved Tablet) was created, Allah Taala
commanded the pen to write. The pen begin to
write on behalf of Allah Taala.

This was the first thing to be written.

Then:
70 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Whoever does not submit to my judgment,

and does not observe patience upon
problems sent by me, and does not give
thanks for the blessings I have given him,
then he can take another Lord apart from
Me.

Therefore, a special characteristic of a

Mumin is that he remains happy with the
decisions of Allah Taala. His good deeds
always increase instead of decreasing.

How to find the pleasure of Allah Taala

A man of Banu israeel asked Hazrat
Musa Alaihi Salaam, How can one know if
Allah Ta;ala is pleased ? Hazrat Musa Alaihi
Salaam went to Mount Tur and placed the
same question before Allah Taala. Allah Taala
answered:
O Musa! Tell them that if in their hearts
they are pleased with Me, then I, too, am
pleased with them. However, if in their hearts
they are unhappy with me, then I, too, am
unhappy with them. What is simple way to
know! We, too, should look into our hearts. If
we are happy with Allah Taala, then He, too,
is happy with us. If we are displeased with
Him, e.g. a child died at an early age or some
business was not successful, if we have such
71 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

complaints in our heart towards Allah Taala,

then He, too, is displeased with us. He will ask
us if we were ever grateful for the bounties
and blessings that He had gave us.

THE MERCY OF ALLAH TAALA

A pious elder said that he received divine

inspiration from Allah Taala that:
O my slave! Tell these people that as
soon as circumstances turn against them, they
immediately sit with their friends and start
complaining about Me! Despite their book
being filled with sins, I do not complain about
them in the gathering of angels!
How true this is! We have worn out our
teeth by eating the bounties of Allah Taala,
but we have not worn out our tongues by
praising Him.
A Mumin should, in all circumstances, be
pleased with his Lord. If he decides that he will
always be pleased with Allah Taala, then no
matter what circumstances he has to face,
they will always became easier.

Surely we will test you with a bit of fear and

hunger, and loss in wealth and fruits, and
72 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

give good tidings to the patient. [Al-Baqara

02:155]

When one is patient in difficult

circumstances, he will be deserving of Allah
Taalas reward.

THE ACTIONS OF A MUMIN IN DIFFICULT

SITUATIONS

No one is free of worries in this world

If one is, he is not a human being

Everyone experiences sorrow, but each

type of sorrow is different. However, the pious
people hide their sorrow in their hearts. They
do not complain about their beloved to people.
A Mumin never complains to others, he
instead prays two rakaats of salah and makes
dua to his Lord. This two rakaats (salatul
Hajat) is a means of communication with Allah
Taala. It is a way, which we have been taught
so that we can ask directly from Allah Taala.
How easy our lives have been made for us
through our faith!
Today, people in the west possess the
latest technology in all the areas, but they are
still unhappy. They have no peace of mind
(Life is very difficult!) because they have no
73 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

faith. On the other hand, even in difficult

times, a Mumin always praises his Lord and is
pleased with him, Subhan Allah!

THE STORY OF SHAH DOULA

Shah Doula was a pious man. There was

a dam near his village, which prevented
floodwater from entering the village. Once
there was a lot of rain and the dam developed
a crack. The villagers came to Shah Doula and
asked him to pray that the dam would not
break. He took an exe, went to the dam and
began digging the exact place where the crack
was. The people were shocked, and told him
they had brought him there to make dua for
the dam not to break, and here he was,
breaking the dam himself! He answered:
If my Lord wants to break the dam,
then why should not I break it my self?
Allah Taala was pleased with his
humility, and flood waters began to recede at
once. Thus the pious are completely
submissive to the will of Allah Taala.
They always say:

And I trust my matter with Allah.

74 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

[Al-MUmin 40:44 Only the relevant portion

of Aayah documented]

I have left all my affairs in Allahs hands.

We, too, should be pleased with Allah
Taala. The Quran, In a unique way, states
that:

Is Allah not sufficient for (the protection

of) His slave.
[Az-Zumar 39:36-only the relevant portion of
the aayah is documented]

Is Allah Taala not enough for His people?

Do they leave His doorstep and run elsewhere?
Thus, in our times of trial, we should
say:

Major problems are solved by reciting

these words.
How to reduce ones sadness
Once, the Prophet Sallalahu Alaihi
Wasalam was very saddened by the
mistreatment of the Kuffar of Makkah. Allah
Taala, in a wonderful way, said:

And be patient: your patience is bestowed by

none but Allah, and do not grieve over them,
and do not be in distress for what they devise.
75 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Surey, Allah Taala is with those who fear Him

and those who are good in their deeds.
[An-Nahl 16:127-128]

Thus when one is worried or sad, one

should recite the above aayah a few times,
and he will see the difference. It is a proven
fact that Allah Taala solves the huge problems
through the recitation of this aayah. The heart
will thus attain peace.

Why circumstances change

Circumstances keep changing. Allah

Taala has different reasons for causing these
changes. At one time, there could be one
reason while at another time, there could be
another reason. Allah Taala says in the
Quran:

Allah withholds and extends, and to him

you are to be returned.
[Al-Baqara 02:245- only the relevant aayah
is documented]
Allah Taala is in charge of all. (He is the
one who can seize and change all).

[Al-Baqara 02:245-Only the relevant portion

of the aayah is documented]

And it is He who gives all.

76 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Therefore, at times, one experiences the

attribute of Allah Taala as th The Taker (Al-
Qaabidh). All one may see are difficulties,
worries and things for the worst. Sometimes,
when one may experience the attribute of
Allah Taala as the extender of Rizq (Al-Basit),
then one may see happiness everywhere. Even
if he takes a wrong step, he still sees that all is
well. This is the way a person is affected by
the attributes of Allah Taala. When a believer
begins to understand this, then there is no
reason for grief. If Allah Taalas attriburte of
Jamaal or Grace (beauty, kindness, mercy,
benevolence) is bestowed upon an individual,
he experiences best conditions in his health, in
his earning, in his spouse, in his children and
in his relations. In the same way, when the
attribute of Allah Taala- Jallal or Majesty
(splendor, magnificence, glory) is experienced,
then one will have worries in his heart. Thus
all the attributes of Allah Taala present
themselves on human beings and accordingly
a persons conditions will change.

Reformists must be soft spoken

The young man said: No, may Allah
make me sacrificed on you. The Noble Rasul
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said. In the same
manner people also do not like it for their
daughters. The narrator Ibn Awf added, till
the Noble Rasul Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
mentioned paternal aunt, maternal aunt, etc,
and for every one the young men said, No,
may Allah make me sacrificed on you, and
the Noble Rasul Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
responded, In the same manner the people
do not like it. Then Sayyidna Rasullullah
Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam, put his hand on the
young mans chest and said, O Allah, purify
his heart, forgive his sins, and safeguard his
private parts. Thereafter, nothing was more
detestable to the young man than Zinaa
(adultery fornication). (Ahmad)
A lecturer spokeharshly to Abuu Jafar

Mansur. Abuu Jafar requested him to be

gentle and reminded him, Allah Taala sent a
man better than you, namely Muusaa (Moses),
Alayhis Salaam, to a man worse than me,
namely Firown (Pharaoh), yet Allah had
commanded Muusaa, Alayhis Salaam, to be mild
in speech. (Surah Taahaa, 20:44) Alah had also
commanded the Noble Rasul, Sallallahu Alaih
Wasallam, to bee gentle and compassionate.
(Surah Aali Imran, 3:159)

Suffering and misfortunes must be

borne patiently
Those who have religious duties to
perform do face trails and difficulties. Often,
arrogant and illiterate people pose problems.
They must endure these with patience. This is
the way with Allah sas confirmed in the
Quran. (Surah Ankabuut, 29 1-3, Surah Baqarah,
2:213) Sayyindna Laqman had enjoined his son
to be patient. (Surah Luqman, 31:17), A trial
endured is offset by admittance to jannah and
is an expiation of sins. (Surah Aali Imraan 3:195).
The Ambiyah Alayhimus Salaam, faced more
trails than anyone else. It is the patient ones
who are nearest to the Ambiyyah in action.
The stronger a person is in the deen, the more
79 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

trails he will face, gaining purification in the

process (Tirmizi, Ibn Majaah, Ibn Hibbaan and
Haakim). Access to jannah is gained by
enduring misfortunes and worries, while
Jahannam is reached through lust and
pleasures (Muslim). Remember how often the
Noble Rasul, Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, endured
painful situations. How many trails he had to
go through! How steadfast and thankful he
was. Finally, he was rewarded with success.
When it appears impossible to remove
evil and there is a danger to ones life too,
then it is wise to exercise caution. However,
one must not give up, or lose heart, when
confronted with physical harm or
imprisonment. A reformist must be willing to
forgo all for the sake of religious glory. One
must not compromise with people, but aim to
obtain the pleasure of Allah Taala alone in the
manner of our righteous predecessors. Before
they advocate approved deeds, reformists
must equip themselves with the required
knowledge so that they preach authoritatively.
Always obtain advice from the deeds and
standpoints of the salaf saaliheen (pious
predecessors).
80 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

From studying the exploits and attitudes

of the salaf saaliheen, Muslims are motivated
to be courageous and brave. They adopt a
pious stand, some of the salaf saaliheens
glorious and decisive feats are narrated here.
Abuu Ghiyaath Bukhaa-rii lived in a
cemetery. One day he went to the city to meet
his brother. He saw the son of the ruler, Nasr
bin Ahmad , emerging from his house with a
band of singers who were carrying musical
instruments. A palace banquet was sheduled
that day. On seeing this evil, he exclaimed to
himself, O Abuu Ghiyaath! You have a difficult
decision to make. If you shut your eyes to this
sinful act, you will be equally blamed. He
looked towards the sky, sought the help of
Allah, picked up his staff, and descended on
those people. All of them retreated into the
palace, scared out of their wits. They went and
complained to the ruler, who immediately
summoned Abuu Ghiyaath.
You must know that the punishment of
rebellion is imprisonment.
Abuu Gaiyaath retorted, Dont you know
that one who revolts against Ar-Rahman (Most
Merciful) is consigned to jahannam?
The ruler said: Who has authorised you
to appropriate to yourself the preaching of
good and prohibition of evil?
81 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

He Who has entrusted you with the

government.
Of course, the Khalifah has appointed
me as the ruler.
Abuu Ghiyaath interposed, My Lord has
commanded me to promote approved acts and
stifle amoral and disapproved deeds.
The ruler offered, I appoint you ruler
over Samarkand.
Abuu Ghiyaath turned down the
overtures, I tender my resignation.
The ruler protested, You surprise me.
On the one hand, you appropriate a duty, yet,
when it is handed over to you, you reject it.
Abuu Ghiyaath argued, Today you give
me a position; tomorrow you may dismiss
me. But, when my Lord assigns to me a
responsibility, no one is able to relieve me of
it.
The ruler countered Ask what you wish.
He pleaded, Let me have my youth
back.
Thats not within my powers. Ask for
something else.

Write a note to the keeper of jahannam

not to torment me.
This too is outside my powers. Ask for
anything else that you need.
Abuu Ghiyaath asked for a note to the
keeper of jannah to admit him.
When the ruler repeated his earlier
answer, Abuu Ghiyaath said, All this is within
the powers of my Lord. He is the Owner of all
the creation and of everything in this world
and in the hereafter. He gives me everything
that I ask of Him.
The ruler relented and let him go.
Imaam Ghazaa-lii Rahmatullahi Alaihi states
in his Ihyaa from As-maee who said, Ataa bin
Abi Rabaah visited Khalifah Abdulmalik bin
Marwaan. The Khalifah was seated on his
couch. Around him were dignitaries from
various places. That was in Makkah
Mukarramah at the time of hajj during his
reign of Khailaafah. When he saw Ataa, he
stood and made Ataa sit with him on his
couch, and said to him, O Abaa Muhammad,
what is your need? Ataa said, O Amirul Mu-
mineen, fear Allah Taala in His Haram and the
Haram of His Rasul Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.

Busy youself with its upkeep. Fear Allah in the

affairs of the children of the Muhaajir and
Ansaar, for you have attained this position
because of them. Fear Allah Taala in the
matters of those living on the borders,
because they are like a fortress of the
Muslims. Keep youself involved in the
supervision of the concerns of the Muslims
because you will be asked about these
matters, Also, fear Allah Taala regarding those
who come to your door. The Amiraul Mu-
mineen replied, Very well. It will be as you
say. Then, Ataa got up to depart. The Khalifah
took hold of his hands and said, You have
reminded me of the needs and wishes of
others. I have fulfilled them. Now, let me
know your needs. He replied, I crave nothing
from the creation (Of Allah). So saying, he
went his way. The Khalifah could not help
remark, This indeed, is the peak of honour
and nobility!
It is found in Ash-sha-qaa-i-qun
Numaaniyyah li Ulamaa adDaulah al-
Uthmaaniyyah that Sultaan Saliim Khaan had
ordered that the hundred and fifty guards of
the treasury be executed. Mufti Alaa-uddin Alii
bin Ahmad a religious scholar of the time, got
news of this. It was not usual for a Mufti to go

to the imperial court except for a serious

matter. The attendants at the court were
surprised. He went to the imperial court. Upon
entering the court he greeted ministers who
receive him honourably and offered him a
prominent seat, then asked him the purpose of
his visit. He replied that he had come to see
the sultaan. When he was informed sultan
khaan allowed him a private audience in his
chamber. He greeted the king and sat down.
Then he said, It is the responsiblity of those
connected with the iftaa to aid the king
preserve his hereafter. Your comand to
execute the hundred and fifty men is against
shariiah. Please forgive them. The king was a
stern man. He said angrily, You are
interfering in affairs of the state, which is
beyond your duties. The mufti answered, I
am discussing your hereafter which is part of
my duties. Forgive them and you will be safe
in the next world, otherwise you will invite a
severe punishment. The king calmed down.
He fogave all the accused. The conversation
between the two continued for some time.
During the conversation Mufti Alaa-uddin said,
It is out of regard that I say that these men
are the kings slaves. How will it be when they
spread their hands before others for aid?

Should you not reinstate them to their

previous posts? The king agreed to this
suggestion too.
Shaykh Muhammad Sulaymaan writes
the following in his book, Min Akhlaaq al-
Ulamaa. War broke out between Misr (Egypt)
and Habshah (Ethopia). Misr was losing
because of differences among the army
commanders. Khud-yawii (Khedive) Ismaaeel
was much pained. One day the Khud-yawii
went out with Shariif Baashaa. The Khud-yawii
said to Shariif Baashaa, What do you do when
a calamity descends? He replied. I have the
Bukhaa-rii read by saalih (pious) ulamaa, then
Alah Taala dispels my anxities. We will speak
to the Shakh of Al-Azhar, Shaykh al-Aruushii.
A group from among the pious Ulamaa were
gathered, who read the Bukhaari in the old
masjid of Al-Azhar. The chain of defeat
continued. Khud-yawii and Shariff Baashaa
went to the ulama. He said to them angrily,
Either what you read is not Bukhaa-rii or you
are not from among the pious ulamaa. Your
reading of Bukha-rii has been of no
consequence. The ulamaas were quiet and
nonplussed. An aalim in the last row got up,
came forward and remarked, Khud-yawii
Ismaaeel, ponder over what you say. Reflect

over the words of a hadith, carry on

advocating the approved acts and forbidding
the disapproved, otherwise Allah will raise
over you the worst of men. Your good people
will make duaa, but Allah will not answer their
duaa. The ulamaa were dumbfounded. Khud-
yawii and Shariff left without saying a word.
The ulamaa began to reproach the shaykh and
reprimanded him. The shariff returned after a
while and said, where is the Shaykh who said
to the Khud-yawii what he said, The shaykh
said, Here I am. The attitude of the ulamaa
changed after having reproached the shaykh,
bidding him farewell as if he was not going to
return. Those present presumed that he would
face the outcome of his rashness. The Shariff
got up and took him away. Shariff took the
shaykh to Khud-yawiis palace. He offered him
a seat and asked him to repeat what he had
said in the assembly. He repeated his words.
Khud-yawii exclaimed, what is our crime
that has brought upon us this punishment?

Hazrat Imam Sahibs Allah-consciousness,

meditation and his withdrawal from futile pursuits

An incident

On one occasion, his servant opened a

bake of silk before him containing green, red
and yellow silk. The servant blurted out: We
ask Allah to grant us Jannah. Imam Abu
Haniah Rahmatullahi Alaihi was overcome with
grief and he started weeping so bitterly that
his cheeks and shoulders became wet. He
instructed the servant to close the shop while
he covered his head and went away from
there. Yazid Ibn Kumait relates that the next
day I was sitting next to him when he said:
How brave have we become before Allah? We
are asking Him for Jannah? Only the person
who has pleased Allah has the right to ask for
Jannah. As for us, all we can ask for is His

forgiveness. O Allah! We ask forgiveness and

security and eternal peace in the Din, the
Dunya and the hereafter.

Abdullah Ibn Mubarak says: When Abu

Hanifah used to walk on the road, (due to his
intense concentration upon the remembrance
of Allah), he was unable to differentiate whom
he passed, man or woman.

He used to walk lowering his head and

his gaze, he was always engrossed in the Zikr
of Allah.

Imam Abu Yusuf says that he heard

Imam Abu Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaihi saying:
From the time I gained understanding, I
havent been audacious before Allah.

Bakr Ibn Jafar narrates: At times

people used to come and narrate incidents
before Imam Sahib. After the person had
spoken for some time, Imam Sahib would cut
him off and divert his attention to some other
topic by asking him, What do you have to say
in such and such matter etc. Imam Sahib
used to advise the people: Avoid narrating
things people dislike. May Allah forgive that

person who speaks unfavorably about me and

may Allah shower His mercy upon him who
speaks favourably about me. Learn the Din of
Allah and leave the people occupied in the
(permissible) pursuits they have chosen for
themselves. Allah will make them in need of
you.

Qadi Abul-Qasim Ibn Kas narrates that

Yazid Ibn Harun said: Imam Abu Hamifah
Rahmatullahi Alaihis attention was focussed
upon his grace, peity, truthfulness and all
those attributes he was in need of.

Saymari narrates from Imam Abu Yusuf

Rahmatullahi Alaihi that Imam Sahib was
asked: Who is more virtuous Alqamah or
Aswad? He replied: By Allah! Due to their
esteemed status, I am only in a position to
mention them with Dua and Istighfar. How
can I give preference to one over the other?

Umar Ibn Ibrahim Basri narrates that his

father, Ibrahim said: I once saw Imam Abu
Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaihi looking very
dejected and worried. He was taking long
breaths. I asked him: May Allah have mercy
upon you. What is the problem? He replied:
90 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

There is only one objective and there is

danger in attaining it as well. (In other words,
Allah is the objective. The issue of acquiring
Him or losing Him is becoming perplexing for
me.)

He also narrates that once he was

standing next to Imam Sahib in Fajr Salah
when Imam Sahib recited the verse: And do
not consider Allah unaware of the actions of
the tyrants (sinners). Imam Sahib started
trembling with fear to such an extent that he
also perceived it.

Abu Jafar Faqih Balkhi narrates: I have

heard that whenever Imam Abu Hanifah
Rahmatullahi Alaihi was confronted by a difficult
or intricate Masalah, he used to tell his
students: We are unable to solve this issue
due to a sin I had committed. Thereafter, he
used to pray for Allahs forgiveness. At times,
he used to stand up, make Wudu, perform two
Rakats and then ask for Allahs forgiveness.
The problem would then be solved (with the
grace of Allah Taala). He would then remark:
I am rather glad to see my Taubah
(repentance) being accepted. This is why the
91 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

problem has been solved. When news of this

reached to Fudail Ibn Iyaz via one of Imam
Sahibs students, Fudail wept very bitterly and
said: May Allah shower His mercy upon Imam
Abu Hanifah. This habit of his stems from the
paucity of his sins. As for other people, their
sins have encompassed them from all four
sides but still their attention is not drawn to
this.

Abu Muhammad Harithi narrates that

Imam Musir said: I was once walking with
Imam Abu Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaihi when he
inadvertently tramped a childs foot. He didnt
even realize what he did until the child
shouted out: Shaikh! Dont you fear Qisas
(retaliation) on the day of judgment? The
moment Imam Sahib heard this, he fainted.
When he regained his senses, I asked: The
childs statement had such an effect on your
heart? He replied: I feared that probably Allah
Taala inspired him to say what he said.

Abu Muhammad Harithi narrates that

Nasr Ibn Al-Hajib Qurashi said: Imam Abu
Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaih didnt consider it
below his dignity to appear in the Majlis of
92 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Umar Ibn Zar. On one occasion, people saw

him listening to Umars lecture whilst his eyes
were tearing away.

Abu Khabbab narrates that he saw Masur

Ibn Al-Mutamir and Imam Abu Hanifah
Rahmatullahi Alaih entering the Masjid at the
same time. For quite some time, both of them
were silently conversing with each other and
crying at the same time. Thereafter, both of
them came out of the Masjid. Abu Khabbab
says: I asked Imam Abu Hanifah
Rahmatullahi Alaih why they both wept so
much and he replied: We were discussing the
dominance of the people of falsehood over the
people of good in these times. This increased
our weeping.

Yahya Ibn Hajib Qurashi narrates: My

father, Nasr Ibn Hajib, was a companion of
Imam Abu Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaihi. I slept at
his place a few times. I witnessed him busy
with Salah for the entire night. His tears used
to fall like rain on the grass-mat to such an
extent that I could actually hear them falling.

Discourse
The Reality of Taubah
By: Hazrat Faqeehul-Ummah Mufti Mahmood Hasan Gangohi
Sahib Rahmatullahi Alaihi

Translated By: Hazrat Maulana Ilyaas Bayat Sahib

Rahmatullahi Alaihi

Allah Taala accepts the repentance of His

servants. (Ash-Shura : 25)

When a person makes Taubah Allah

becomes extremely happy. The object of taubah is
to regret and be remorseful over ones actions.
One should ponder in this manner: I have
committed this error whereas I was not supposed
to have done so.

By showing remorse and regret, a person is

pleading before Almighty Allah Taala to forgive his
wrongdoings and shortfalls. However, some
necessary steps are essential for the acceptance of
this repentance. Paying mere lip service and
proclaiming:
94 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Forgive my sins. I am repenting, is

insufficient.

In Kanpur, one of my friends complained to

me that his four-year-old child was always asking
for money.

Why are you asking for money? I said,

reprimanding him.

He immediately caught hold of both his ears

with his hands (in a manner of repenting.)

Will you ask for money in future? I added.

No, never again, he assured me.

Thereafter, he struck his father on his knee

and said: Now give me the money since I have
repented.

Our repentance, nowadays, is similar to this

childs repentance. We feel that merely mentioning
the word taubah is sufficient and no other
recourse is required.

Covering up

Some sins are of such a nature that taubah

alone does not suffice and qadha becomes
obligatory. For example, a person did not perform
his Salaah, (It is essential that together with
making taubah he performs the qadha of the
missed Salaah). Not performing qadha and merely
95 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

saying: O Allah! Forgive me. I have not

performed my Salaah. I will perform it in future,
is definitely inadequate.

It is absolutely incumbent on that person to

perform qadha of the Salaah omitted. (Then only
will the taubah be accepted.)

If a person did not fast in the month of

Ramazan, it will be obligatory upon him to make
qadha of the missed fasts. Not observing the
qadha and merely resorting to repentance and
pleading: O Allah! I am repenting, I will fast in
future, will not suffice.

Similarly, if a person did not pay his zakaat,

for his taubah to be accepted he will have to
discharge the outstanding amount. Without paying
out the due zakaat, it will also not suffice for him
to say, O Allah! Forgive me. I will discharge my
zakaat in future.

The crux of the matter is that those laws of

the Shariah which can be recompensed by making
qadha, Shariah has made its qadha obligatory.
The acceptance of taubah requires that we fulfill
the qadha as well as beg for forgiveness for not
having fulfilled the obligation at its prescribed
time.

The similitude to this situation is where a

person is in debt or has to pay a government tax
96 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

at a stipulated date but has missed the deadline.

He presents himself before the magistrate and
begs for leniency saying: I did not pay my tax on
time, please forgive me, I am begging your
forgiveness.

It is possible that he may be pardoned for

not meeting the deadline but does this mean that
he will be absolved from paying the outstanding
tax as well? Definitely not! The tax will still have to
be paid out. Similarly, in the Shariah there are
many obligations which, if not fulfilled, will make
qadha incumbent upon an individual. A persons
taubah will not be accepted without fulfilling the
qadha.

As far as the violation of the rights of human

beings is concerned, the dictates of taubah require
that the particular right (which was usurped) be
fulfilled. For example, a person usurped anothers
wealth.

I beg you forgiveness, he wails. Please

forgive me. I have taken your wealth.

This is insufficient. He is required to first pay

out the wealth that he owes and then seeks the
victims forgiveness.

Furthermore, taubah should be made in

accordance with the manner in which the sin was
committed. The taubah should reciprocate the
97 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

degree or severity of the sin. If a sin was

committed in solitude, the taubah should be made
in solitude as well. I a sin was committed in the
presence of a few people then the repentance too
should be executed in the presence of those
people. In this situation, to make taubah in
solitude will not be acceptable.

The example of this is backbiting or speaking

ill of another person in his absence and that
individual has learnt about it. Making taubah in
solitude will be inadequate. He has to repent in the
company of those in whose presence he had
committed this evil deed and seek Allah Taalas
pardon as well.

Chunks of meat

The Quran has explicitly prohibited

backbiting. Allah Taala stated in the Quraan:

Do not speak ill of each other behind their

backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh
of his dead brother? (al-Hajuraat:12)

Thus, backbiting can be ascribed to person

who breaks off chunks of meat from his dead
brothers corpse and consumes it. It is reported in
98 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

a Hadith that Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih

Wasallam once asked the Sahaabah Raziyallahu
Anhum: Do you know what backbiting is?

The Sahaabah Raziyallahu Anhum replied:

Allah Taala and his Rasool Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam
know best.

Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam

explained: To mention something about your
brother, in his absence which, if pointed out to him
in his presence, will be disliked by him.

What if that weakness is actually found in

this person? the Sahaabah Raziyallahu Anhum
enquired. (Will it then still constitute backbiting?)

Yes, answered Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallah

Alaih Wasallam. This will indeed be backbiting for if
the weakness is not found in him, you have
slandered him.

Crossing over Jahannum

Regarding the sin of slandering, it has been

recorded in the books of Hadith that the person
who had slandered another in this world, will be
stopped whilst crossing the bridge of Siraat. He
will be asked to furnish the evidence for his false
allegation against his fellow brother. He will also
be asked to bring forth witnesses to support his
claim and, until and unless they are not brought
forth, he will not be allowed to proceed. He will be
99 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

made to stand on the bridge of siraat and beneath

him the flames of jahannum will be constantly
rising.

Some people will cross over with the speed

of lightening, others like the wind, whilst some will
cross over it with the speed of a fast horse. The
fire would not harm them whatsoever. But as for
that person who is in this unfortunate position, he
will be made to stand motionless, and it will be
demanded of him: Bring forth your evidence.

How will it ever be possible to produce false

evidence on that day? In this world, false evidence
can be manufactured. This has been predicted as
one of the signs of Qiyaamah. Hazrat Nabi Akram
Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam is reported to have said:

People will give evidence without even

being asked to do so.

How will it ever be possible to bring forth

false evidence in the hereafter? This crime of
slandering another person is such a heinous sin.

Pen him down!

Just as backbiting can be committed by

means of ones speech, so too can it be done by
means of ones pen. In fact, the backbiting
committed by ones pen is even more severe than
100 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

that of the tongue because that which has been

spoken has come to an end (after the
conversation). Some may remember the
discussion whilst other may forget. However the
person who made gheebat with the pen, by
printing and circulating it or merely printing
pamphlets or small booklets, this sin will remain
forever.

This is a continuous sin, which is extremely

dangerous. The pen is known as one of the two
tongues. One tongue is found in a persons mouth
whilst the other is in his hand, i.e. his pen. We
have now understood how contemptible this sin is.

One form of backbiting occurs by merely

gesturing with the hands. A person may be short.
To indicate that so and so is short by gesturing is
also backbiting. Another person may be tall. To
make an indication of this with ones hand
whereby that person may resent it is also a form
of backbiting. Others may be inflicted by other
forms of deficiencies and to indicate this by means
of gestures, will also constitute backbiting.

Subtle trouble

There is also another subtle form of

backbiting which people do not even consider as
backbiting. For example, a person begins praising
someone in a gathering saying that so and so is a
101 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

very wonderful person. Another person in the

gathering then sarcastically says: Yes, it is so, or
he may very sarcastically shake his head in the
affirmative.

In this instance, although he has not made

any verbal statement but, by shaking his head, he
implies that you are unaware of the praised
individuals shortcomings.

I know what type of a person he really is.

This also represents gheebat. It is of a very

dangerous nature because one does not even
realise that he is backbiting.

Caution: Danger ahead

There is yet another type of backbiting that

Allamah Shaami Rahmatullahi Alaih has regarded as
Kufr. This is of an extremely perilous nature. The
example of this is speaking ill of your brother and
then rejecting the admonishment not to indulge in
this sin.

How can I be backbiting, we indignantly

retort. What I am saying is absolutely true. In
fact I can tell it to him on his face.

It is as though we are regarding backbiting

as permissible so long as it is true, whereas
gheebat actually constitutes that which is true.
The Quraan, on the other hand, totally prohibits it
102 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

and regards it as haraam. Thus, we are in actual

fact refuting a Nass-e-Qatee (definite injunction).
An act, which is prohibited through Nass-e-Qatee,
is being regarded as permissible. This is Kufr. That
is why Allamah Shaami Rahmatullahi Alaihi has
classified it as Kufr. May Allah Taala save and
protect us all.

Kicking the habit

Allah Taala has gathered us here in this

Masjid (Darul Uloom Mashid in Dabhel). I
continuously tell those who go out in the path of
Allah Taala (Tableeghi Jamaat) that when a
habitual drunkard goes out for a Chillah (forty
days), forty days would have elapsed without him
drinking alcohol. Remaining in his home would
have made it very difficult for him to abandon his
evil habits. But, since he came out in jamaat, he
was saved from consuming alcohol.

He may have had the foul habit of swearing

but once he had come out for forty days he did not
swear. He always used to fight and quarrel with
others. For forty days he did not do so. He was a
constant thief but for forty days he did not steal.

A person may be involved in a variety of sins

ranging from physical sins to relating to ones
character but, once he has come out for forty
days, Allah Taala has protected him from these
103 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

maladies. And, upon his return, the effect of this

environment remains with him. And if he has to go
out in jamaat again, this will benefit him even
more. However, if he becomes negligent then
slowly but surely his previous evil habits will
resurface.

Similarly, Allah Taala has sent us here to

this Masjid. We are prohibited from leaving the
Masjid without a valid Sharee or acceptable,
sound reason. Those evil habits, which we may
have possessed at home, have been left outside
and Allah Taala has given us an excellent
opportunity to free ourselves from such evil
habits. By staying here, we can even guard our
tongues. To protect our tongues is extremely
important.

Once, a companion of Hazrat Nabi Akram

Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam requested for some special
advice. Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam
pointed to his tongue and said: Guard this!

It is recorded in the hadith that every

morning, all the libs of the body address the
tongue begging of it: O servant of Allah Taala! If
you remain upright we will remain upright (safe),
but if you do not remain upright then we too will
suffer the consequences. Hence, to protect the
tongue is of paramount importance.
104 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

The companions Raziyallahu Anhum of Hazrat

Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam once enquired
that if something undesirable was uttered, will
they be taken to task for this on the Day of
Qiyaamah?

Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam

replied: - May your mother cry over

you. A large number of people will be flung
overturned into the fire of jahannam because of
this.

Thus, we have an excellent opportunity here

to guard and protect our tongues. What a
tremendous benefit is gained by familiarising our
tongues with the recitation of the Holy Quran,
tasbeeh, zikr, Durood Shareef, istighfaar, etc.
instead of involving it in backbiting, swearing,
arguing and quarrelling.

Weigh your words

It is recorded in the Ahaadeeth that, at times,

a person may utter a seemingly insignificant word.
However, due to this very utterance he will be flung
into jahannam. That is how dangerous just one
word can be. An excellent chance has been provided
to us now to protect our tongues. Sometimes whilst
quarreling and arguing amongst ourselves, we do
not even get the opportunity of reflecting upon what
we are uttering, and Shaitaan becomes
105 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

overwhelmed with joy.

The thorny tree

It is stated in a Hadith that in the evening

Shaitaan spreads his throne on the ocean and
seats himself on it. All his subordinates gather
around him to render an account of their days
work. One disciple will relate:

I have caused a person to miss his Salaah today.

You have done nothing, Shaitaan bemoans.
Your deed is very insignificant.

This rendering of accounts will continue until

one disciple says: Today, I caused a fight
between a husband and a wife. When the husband
came home, I whispered to his wife to accuse him
of doing something wrong. I incited the husband
to flatly refute this accusation and advised him
how to respond to his wifes accusation and vice-
versa, until both their blood pressures rose and
their tempers flared, resulting in the wife leaving
her husband and going to her parents home.
Hearing this, Shaitaan becomes elated.
Indeed you have done something very laudable.
You are really worthy of being my deputy. He
then embraces this disciple.
The wife has now gone to her parents
home. Her parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, etc.
106 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

will gather around her to ascertain what had

transpired. She will relate every minute detail,
resulting in backbiting and even slandering. Thus,
a special gathering of backbiting and slandering
involving every household member will take place.
The husbands family, friends and associates
will also come and question him and a similar
scenario will occur there. This acrimonious
bickering will continue between then and they will
stop communicating with each other.
It is narrated in a Hadith that our actions are
presented before Allah Taala every Monday and
Thursday. Everyone is forgiven except for two
people who have severed ties with each other.
Their actions are not even presented before Allah
Taala, resulting in them being deprived of His
forgiveness. It is said regarding them that until
and unless they do not reconcile, they will not be
forgiven and their deeds will not be presented to
Allah Taala.
It is reported in another Hadith that when
two Muslim brothers cease to communicate with
each other because of some argument and fight
and they break off ties with one another, duaas of
both are rejected.
Furthermore, the husband and wife have
desires and passions. The husband will fulfil his
lust and desires unlawfully and vice versa. The
offspring of these illicit relationships will be a
107 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

source of even greater hardship for them. Due to a

disagreement between the parents the children
get affected as well.
AS a result of the viperous tongue, this
conflict has thrown their lives into such a
lamentable and sorrowful state. Shaitaan has
planted a tree of sins, yielding thorny branches,
and these will constantly grow and bear poisonous
fruit, and various types of worms and insects will
then inhabit it.
Nevertheless, we have been provided with
an excellent opportunity to protect our tongues.
Hence, during Itikaaf, we should not speak
unnecessarily. However, amongst our friends
something or the other will be spoken. An eleven-
month-old habit is impossible to give up in just a
single day. But definitely this habit will be
decreased. We will definitely experience some
change when we make the correct and sincere
intention.
We have come here to ask of Allah Taala, to
beg His forgiveness and to repent for our
shortcomings. We are beseeching Him to protect
us in the future as well. Thus, divine assistance
will come from the side of Allah Taala. Our
previous sins will be forgiven and, Insha-Allah, we
will be protected in the future as well. May Allah
Taala grant us all ability of practising upon what
has been mentioned Aameen.

Essay
Repentance and forgiveness
By: Maulana Dawuud Vowda Sahib

All praises to Allah and salutations upon

our Beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaih Wasallam.

Human beings are naturally weak and

inclined more towards evil and sin, but with
striving towards the obedience and pleasure of
Allah Taala, one has control of oneself and
refrains from wrong-doing.

In this era of corruption, we are steadily

heading towards materialism and secularism
and very far from spiritualism. Due to this sad
state, we have become negligent of virtuous
deeds and inclined to sins. Many people claim
to be Muslims, but are drowned in sins, so
much so that they do not even think it as sins
therefore cannot imagine of repenting. When
their condition becomes such, they believe
that there is no way out and due to excessive
sinning their repentance also will not be
effective.
109 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Allah is most merciful and He overlooks

the sins of His servants when they repent. We
should continue repenting and seeking
forgiveness and have full faith and conviction
with hope that our sins have been forgiven
and repentance accepted.

Any action, deed, etc. which is contrary

to the teachings of Islaam and displeases Allah
Taala is categorised as a sin. Sins should not
be regarded lightly because this alone is a
great offence in the sight of Allah Taala. Every
prohibition is a sin and abstinence from sin is a
great form of worship. When a sin is not
considered a sin, then this is very dangerous
and could be fatal due to our weaknesses, if
we are involved in any sin, then consider and
acknowledge it a sin. By having this
consciousness, Allah Taala grants one the
ability to repent and seek forgiveness. Actions
are of two types: 1.Rights of Allah. 2. Rights of
fellow beings. When a sin is committed and is
from the 1st type then there are three
conditions for repentance: 1.Regret and refrain
from the sin. 2.Express remorse over it. 3.
Make a firm resolution not to commit it in
110 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

future. If it is of the 2nd type, eg. Usurping of

property, harming one physically or verbally
etc. then the same three conditions mentioned
above will apply with an added condition and
that is to fulfill the rights of fellow beings by
compensation in proportion to damage eg.
Returning of property, seeking forgiveness
from the aggrieved etc. if after repenting and
seeking forgiveness. If the sin is committed
again then continue repenting and seeking
forgiveness.

During a recent trip to U.K. In the

company of Hazrat Moulana Haafiz Doctor
Tanweer Ahmad Khan Sahib D.B., in almost
every gathering and sermon, he emphasised
on acknowledging ones sins and repenting.
Hazrat has given us a priceless gift which is
being shared with all. Before going to sleep,
communicate with Allah Taala for a little while
and say, O Allah! I seek forgiveness from all
major, minor, intentional, unintentional,
knowing, unknowing sins I have committed.
You are all forgiving and most kind. You are all
forgiving all my sins. O Allah! Whatever good I
have done through Your divine guidance,
111 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

accept it and grant me the power to do better

in future. O Allah! Whatever health, wealth,
fame respect, comfort, home, business, etc.
You have bestowed, I am not worthy and
deserving of it, You have by Your grace and
mercy blessed me without any merit and You
have showered me with abundance of it. I
cannot express enough gratitude for all these
favour, You continues showering Your favours
and blessings upon this sinful one with ease
and include me amongst Your grateful and
pious servants, Aameen. A very great benefit
of this practice is that whenever a person
passes away, then he will have to account only
for the period he lived for that day in the court
of Allah Taala.

In Islaam, for a Muslim, the relationship

with ones creator and benefactor is very
unique. There is no need to reveal and admit
to anyone any sin committed. One has direct
contact with Allah at all times and His state is
such that He loves those who repent. Many
verses of the Holy Quraan and narrations of
Hazrat Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
explain the love and pleasure Allah Taala had
112 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

for the repenter. It is mentioned in a

narration: Every person is extremely sinful
and the best of sinners are those who repent.

There is still time for repentance now, so

do not delay. Many have this concept that
Allah Taala is most forgiving and most
merciful, so they continue to resolve to a sinful
lifestyle and they hpe to repent and seek
forgiveness since none have knowledge of the
future and nobody knows when death will
approach them.

It is necessary upon every believer to

repent because Allah Himself has commanded
the believers to repent. O Believers! Repent
unto Allah Taala, a pure repentance. Confess
to Allah Taala ones sins and regret such with
remorse and firmly not to resolve to it again.

Amy Allah Taala grant us all the ability,

power, strength and courage to abandon all
sins totally and repent from them regularly.

Instilling the Love for Allah and

Preparing To Meet Him
By: Hazrat Mufti Ebrahim Salejee Saheb

In the mutaqaddimeen (the pious

predecessors), the greatest emphasis was on
tarbiyat i.e. to get the refinement in character
and ways, and secondly on having the right
association. Thereafter, other things in life fall
in place. It is so important that it is like a
vessel and container. If it is clear and pure
then its contents will be preserved.

Among the things that affect man the

most, one is mahabbat and love, and Allah
Taala and Hazrat Nabi Akram (sallallahu alaihi
wasallam) understand this. For example, a
person on his return from jamaat of 6 to 7
months phones his wife and asks if she wants
anything. She makes a hint that she wants a
rose. Hearing this, he will phone the florist and
order it, irrespective of the price. At that time,
he doesnt use logic and reason; it is just his
emotions that he follows. If you use logic you
will say that why should I spend so much of
114 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

money for something that will wither away in

two weeks and it is wastage of money.

Once a Sahaabi was at the entrance of

the musjid and asked Hazrat Nabi Akram
(sallallahu alaihi wasallam), When is
Qiyaamat? Hazrat Nabi Akram (sallallahu
alaihi wasallam) asked him, And what
preparations have you made? So he replied
that he does not have much extra actions to
his credit, but he does have the love of Hazrat
Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). Upon
this Hazrat Nabi Akram (sallallahu alaihi
wasallam) said, (On the Day of Qiyaamah) A
person will be grouped with those whom he
loves. The reason for this Sahaabi asking this
question was because he was eager to see the
rewards of his actions. This shows us that if
you want to expedite something one needs to
ponder over its rewards. Therefore, our Ulama
say that one important aspect that we lack
nowadays is reflecting over the hereafter. The
more you reflect the greater the motivation
and quality of your actions. The more one
reflects the clearer will the picture of the
hereafter become, and the things on the path
then fall away.
115 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

Mankind did not start now; it started

from Hadhrat Aadam (alaihis salaam). So we
should jog our minds and see how they had
confronted situations of doubt and confusion.
Moosa (alaihis salaam) made duaa to Allah
Taala: Rab-bishrah lee sadree (O Allah!
Clear my bosom and heart.), and regarding
the Sahaabah, Allah Taala says: Afa man
sharahallahu sadrahulil-Islaami . . .. When
the heart is opened then the picture becomes
clear and vivid. As a result, Hadhrat Ibnu
Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhuma) says that the
most elite class of people were the Sahaabah
and they were the most well-versed.
Therefore, they did not need to ask too many
questions. So what must we do to get that
clarity? The first thing is love because when
you have love you dont use your rationale;
you just do it. Therefore, in the masnoon
duaa you request Allah Taala showqan ilaa
liqaaik (O Allah! Grant me the yearning to
meet You.) But at the same time you say,
min ghayri dharraaam mudhirrah (without
harming me). If the yearning and love goes
out of proportion then it can be harmful. These
duaas of Hazrat Nabi Akram (sallallahu alaihi
wasallam) are so comprehensive. Just reflect
116 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

and you will understand that it is not an

ordinary persons words.

Mahabbat khood tujhe aadaab-e-

mahabbat sikhadegi Love will teach you the
aadaab and ways of mahabbat. A person does
not need to be told how to make love with his
wife etc. His love for her will automatically
direct him to what he needs to do.

Maktabah `ishq ka andaazah niraala

dekha usko chutti ne milee jisne sabaq yaad
karliya the school of love is quite unique; the
one who learns his lesson does not get leave.
Normally, in schools and colleges etc., once
you learn your work you may go, but in the
college of love the concept is totally different.
The more you learn your sabaq the more you
will have to stay. The real philosophy of life is
what these auliyaa teach. What the
philosophers etc. say is nothing compared to
what they say. When you get that love of Allah
then it is such that you just want to go on, and
there is no end to the excitement. The
incidents of Layla and Majnoon are not made-
up; they are true but they are quoted to make
us understand what love really is. Our
117 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

relationship with Allah Taala must not be like

a business relationship, that as long as one is
enjoying the favours he will show his love and
appreciation. Our love for Allah should be
beyond.

In this life everything is created in pairs

and with opposites. You get cold and heat,
sickness and health, etc. So all these are put
in place so that we could appreciate the
different things in life. This is part of the
beauty of Allah Taalas creation. When you
come out of toilet you say ghufraanak i.e.
you seek the forgiveness of Allah Taala. It is a
point of reflection, Allah gave us so much, but
in the language of love you are seeking
forgiveness for you have not expressed
gratitude as you ought to. Then you say
Alhamdulillah because of the relief that you
experience. If there is no enmity you will not
appreciate love. The administration of this
world will continue functioning smoothly as
long as there are these opposites. In the
system of Allah there is always good in
everything even though we cannot perceive it.
There is some wisdom behind it. In everything
118 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

there is a sign of Allah, what we need to do is

reflect and improve our relationship with Allah.

Sports and entertainment such as cycling

etc. have unfortunately become like a culture.
If it is done informally in ones backyard then
there is no problem. When it becomes a
culture then it is dangerous, because you will
want to race and for that you will have a circle
of friends. Then in order to keep up that
relationship you will follow what they do.
Further, just for a race you will fly over to
Cape Town. In the meantime, namaaz is
forgone, and every time you have to upgrade
the bicycle which costs a lot. As a result the
family is neglected. Many a times we get into
these things but we do not reflect over its
effects. You become oblivious of the greater
objectives of life. You get into a different
mindset and you become secular.

The love for Allah does end; it always

requires some form of expression at every
level. And it will never end for He is infinite.
Hence we need to cultivate it. When there is
this love then you want to imitate, but Allah
forbid if you have the wrong mahabbat, and
119 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

you love the wrong people then you will want

to imitate them in their wrong deeds as well,
like spiked hair etc. You take a liking for it, no
matter how dirty and ugly you may look. So
love has no rationale. The thing that you love
and live for, you will die for that as well. On
one end you have a personality like Hadhrat
Bilaal (radhiyallahu anhu). He invested
everything for Hazrat Nabi Akram (sallallahu
alaihi wasallam); his day and night was for
Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam).
Hence when he was approaching his end, his
wife began crying. So he asked her not to cry
for he is now going to be meeting his friends,
Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and the other
Sahaabah. There must be a way to come to
that end and we must make the preparation
before the end comes. Your yearning to meet
Allah needs to increase. Imagine that in such a
case the Creator Himself wants to meet you.
So the greatest thing you can do is not to
reminisce the past; the past is the past and
dont plan too much for the future. Yes, think
what you can do for the present. At least do
something that will bring you closer to Allah.

SPIRITUAL DISEASES
AND THEIR CURE
By: Aarif Billaah, Hazrat Maulana Shah Hakeem
Muhammad Akhtar Sahib Rahmatullahi Alaihi
Translated by: Jenab Naveedul Islam Sahib

Unapt Anger and its cure:

In anger the sanity of a person does not

remain valid and the person is unconscious to
think of its outcome and that is why the
tongue utters inappropriate words and the
hands become the source of injustice and
oppression. Sometimes a person in anger
gives triple talaaq (divorce) and he has to
weep throughout his life and sometimes a
person in anger beats boundlessly to such an
extent that it becomes the crime of murder
and killing. So, because of it the candle of how
many homes and families is being
extinguished forever. It is mentioned in hadith
shareef that anger is from Shaitaan and the
origin of Shaitaan is from the fire and the cure
of fire is water. So, when a person feels anger
he should make wuzu (ablution).
121 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

The cure of the anger is that, the person

who has angered you, remove him from front
and if he does not distance away then,
distance yourself from him and then a person
should think that, the way in which he
wronged, defrauded and disobeyed me. We
disobey Allaah Ta'ala much more than that
each day and night and we are also guilty in
fulfilling the rights of Allaah Ta'ala as well.
Despite that Allaah Ta'ala does not snatch His
benevolence and rewards from us. In the
same way just as we love to be excused and
pardoned, we too should become merciful and
forgiving towards those who have wronged us.
On the day of Qiyaamah upto the extent we
wish Allaah Ta'ala to forgive our sins, to such
extent in this world we must also forgive the
faults of the servants of Allaah Ta'ala and
continue to favour them. Insha Allaahu Ta'ala
when a person thinks with such attitude, his
heart will start feeling lighter. And at the time
of anger he should also recite
multiple times, make wuzu and drink cold
water, as it will lower his temper. If you are
standing at that time, then sit down, if you are
sitting then, lie down. After all, think of
Allaah's punishment. When your anger cools
122 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

down and the intellect becomes valid then

suggest the appropriate punishment you want
to give him. Like, we do anger when we have
to make islaah (reformation) of our children,
but once the anger subsides the person should
hasten to make amends only between the
parameters of Shariah (Islamic law). Doing
such optimization soon will lead us towards
the reformation of our anger.

An exemplary case of not stopping anger

The control of anger seems to be a

burden on nafs (self) but its outcome is always
good. If we control our anger the foe will
become friend, and by showing anger the
friends will turn into foes and gradually a
person in the midst of such immorality
becomes feeble and helpless. Even though,
there was one person with no humanism and
in anger he used to annoy the neighbours.
Once, when his spouse passed away workers
were called and were given wages to lift her
funeral. Hazrat Rasulullah Sallallahu-alaihi-
wasallam said:
123 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

"A strong man is not one who pushes

down another, but a strong man is
one who controls his anger."

Allaah Ta'ala has praised those who

swallow the bitter sip of anger, they forgive
the mistakes of the servants of Allaah Ta'ala.
They not only forgive, but do an act of
kindness upon them, and Allah loves such
people. Regarding the loss of wealth, the
person should think that everything what
happens it is by the will of Allaah Ta'ala and
there are rewards for those who make sabar
(patience). On that occasion, if a person
recites , Allah Ta'ala promises to
give him a better reward than what was in his
provision. At the time of anger the person
should also think that, by taking revenge he
will get deprived off from the reward and
blessings of Allaah Ta'ala and what kind of
benefit he will get. And if, during anger the
revenge exceeded to oppression then he lonely
has to bear the punishment and the wrath of
Allaah Ta'ala.

A narrative
Once, Hazrat Bayazid Bustaami

Rahmatullahi Alaihi were going and an enemy

threw a basket of ashes on his head. Hazrat
Rahmatullahi Alaihi said; Alhamdulillah. The
followers of Hazrat Rahmatullahi Alaihi asked; is
this the way to say Alhamdulillah. Hazrat
Rahmatullahi Alaihi answered; Why should not I
pay gratitude to Allaah Ta'ala, the defiant head
which was capable of raining fire, only ashes
fell on it.

A narrative

Two men were fighting in front of Hazrat

Maulana Jalaal ud din Rumi Sahib Rahmatullahi
Alaihi. One said; if you abuse me once, I will
abuse you ten times. Hazrat Maulana Rumi
Sahib Rahmatullahi Alaihi said; if you will abuse
me thousand times, you will not listen any
harsh word from me. Both of them kissed your
feet and amended peace.

A narrative

Hazrat Maulana Zakariyya Sahib

Rahmatullahi Alaihi once rebuked his khaadim

(attendant) and
he apologized. Hazrat
Rahmatullahi Alaihi said; you are always
agonizing like this, for how long I will endure
your problem? Hazrat Maulana Ilyaas Sahib
Rahmatullahi Alaihi who was sitting nearby,
whispered in the ear of Hazrat Maulana
Zakariyya Sahib Rahmatullahi Alaihi that,
Maulana as much you want that Allaah Ta'ala
should endure our faults and shortcomings on
the day of Qiyaamah to that extent we should
also bear the demerits of His servants. I
mean, sell your pain to Allaah Ta'ala with
forgiveness to beget His forgiveness.

The best effective meditation for

controlling anger

When anger prevails at high intensity

then immediately imagine that, if we hold back
our anger right now then, on the day of
judgement Allaah Ta'ala will also hold back His
punishment from us. This glad tiding is evident
from the narration of Hazrat Anas Raziallahu
anhu.

CAMPUS ROUND-UP

Heavy snowfall
In the first week of January 2017, rain
and snow started falling and in the course of
time there was heavy snowfall in the Kashmir
valley. People said that this year the snowfall
was so heavy that it broke the record of about
last ten years. The wooden roofs at the
Raheemiyyah campus Bandipora collapsed
under the weight of heavy snow. The roof
under which the food was prepared at the time
of Fiqhi seminar also collapsed here. The roof
for stock and other necessary items adjacent
to the kitchen and the roof that was made for
stocking timber and firewood razed to the
ground. This kind of heavy snowfall also
brought severe cold. However, during the
month of February 2017 the condition of
weather started improving. In Kashmir, the
forty days of the weather with severe cold are
called Chilla-e-Kalaan. It starts at the end of
December. The first twenty days of February
129 Nov.Dec. 2016 Jan. Feb. 2017 x

are called Chilla-e-Khurd and the last ten

days are called Chilla-e-Bachcha. After it, the
season of spring starts. This season remains
so fresh and mellow that the parts of cutted
trees also start to bloom as symptoms of life
become visible in them. May Allaah Almighty
bestow such a spring upon Kashmir which will
bring the spring of Deen, Eimaan, grandeur of
Islaam, spring of honour and dignity for the
Muslim community and the good news of
spring of peace and well-being.

And for this purpose, at least 15 kanals of
land is needed.
The respected readers are requested to
make supplication: Duaa, so that the things
needed may be arranged with Aafiyah, and
this stage will pass with excellence and will
become a source of serving Deen as for those
who are concerned with the contemporary
education it is a way of protection of Eimaan
and Islaam that the institutes of contemporary
education will be set up in purely Islaamic
environment where the education of basics of
Deen will be imparted excellently and all kinds
of Islaamic worship, ethics and etiquette will
be taught with practice as practice makes
perfect. And in this way Deen and Eimaan of
the new generation of the Muslim community
will be protected, and that is the aim of
running this school. Let us supplicate that may
Allaah Almighty make this work easy and
