Pre-assessment of current knowledge: Students have had experiences in their own lives with their teeth. This is the hook lesson to gauge other information
they have on the subject of teeth.

We will use a K-W-L chart to see what the students knew
before the book read, what they took away from it, and
what information they want to explore. We will use a check
sheet to aggregate our data.
Program Monitoring: (How will you aggregate or compile
your evidence into a class or group view? Give specific
numeric data.)
We will use a pie chart to assess how to group the students
when dividing up for future activities.

Academic Language:
Dentist, teeth, cavities, tooth paste, pronounce, mouth
Procedural steps:
- Begin by having student sit in a circle and smile. Ask
them what they notice about each others smile.
Then discuss the one thing everyone has in
common: teeth
- We will ask what the students know about teeth and
allow that to foster discussion. We will ask questions
such as:
o Does anyone know how many teeth they
have?
o What happens if you dont brush your teeth?
o Who is the person who makes sure your
teeth are healthy
o Etc.
- We will document the answers on the Know
portion of the K-W-L. Then we will collect questions
students have and document them on the Wonder
portion of the K-W-L chart.
- We will introduce the book Going to the Dentist by
Anne Civardi. After the book read we will focus on
the fact that teeth are used for pronunciation and
eating.
- After reading the book we will see if there were any
answers to the things they wondered. After that we
will document on the K-W-L topics they still want to
learn.
