CONDENSER

Where:

A7 = mass of inlet vapor (2.3106kg)

H7 = enthalpy of A7 (4.272641 108 kJ)

Y7 = water content of A7 (0.05059 kg water/kg D.A.)
A8 = mass of exhaust air
H8 = enthalpy of A8
Y8 = water content of A8
RA = mass of condensed ethanol-citric acid aqueous solution (65799.88518 kg)

HRA = enthalpy of RA
Q2 = condenser duty
1. Mass balance
A7 = A8 + RA

A8 = A7 RA
A8 = 2.3106kg - 65799.88518 kg

A8 = 2.2342 106kg
2. Energy Balance
Exhaust air
The exhaust air has the same compostion and temperature as the inlet air to the dryer.
Using the psychometric chart for the air-water system at standard atmspheric pressure (Green
and Perry 2008), the value of water content and enthalpy for RH = 70% and dry bulb temperature
of 32.5 C is:

Y8 = 0.0218 kg/kg D.A.

h8 = 88.394115 kJ/kg

Thus, the enthalpy of the exhaust air stream is:

H8=(h8)(A8)

H8 = (88.394115 kJ/kg)(2.2342 106kg)

H8 = 1.974901 108kJ

Condensed ethanol-citric acid aqueous solution

An enthalpy-composition graph is obtained to determine the enthalpy of the 28.13%

ethanol of condensed saturated liquid stream (Green and Perry 2008). The specific enthalpy of
this stream is:

hRA=0.3138 kJ/kg

Thus, the enthalpy of the condensed is:

HRA=(hRA)(RA)

HRA = (0.3138 kJ/kg)(65799.88518 kg)

HRA= 20648.00397 kJ
Energy Balance

H7 + Q2 = H8 + HRA

Q2 = H8 + HRA H7

Q2 = 1.974901 108 kJ + 20648.00397 kJ - 4.272641 108 kJ

Q2 = -2.297534 108 kJ
