ABSTRACT

This study is employed to desribe the function of first language in


teaching English to the eleventh grade of social students at SMAN 1
Banyudono in 2015/2016 academic year. The source of the data is the
English teacher in eleventh grade of social students at SMAN 1
Banyudono. This study uses two instrument to collect the data: they are
observation and interview. The data consists of the function of using first
language in teaching English and factor that make the teacher uses first
language in teaching English. Based on the data analysis, it is found 54
data of L1 used by the teacher in teaching English. It is classified into 14
functions
