Quiero regresar a casa por favor mama, a nuestro hogar, no quiero volver a la
escuela. Those were the words I said to my mother on August 23rd, 1999 when I
arrived home from my first day of school in the United States. We had just moved
from Medellin, Colombia during that summer, and I was starting seventh grade in
Austin, TX. My first real challenge arrived when I sat in a math class listening to my
teacher and everyone around me speak a language that I knew very little about. I
went home crying that afternoon, begging for us to return to our home. I wanted to
go back to Colombia where I knew everyone, my teachers, my friends, the
language, the culture, I just wanted to be home, but yet, that was not a possibility.
My mother clearly said to me that we were here to find a better life, education and
opportunities and to live out the famous American Dream. Seventeen years later,
I know exactly what my mother was referring to when she talked about better
opportunities. Over the years, I have set high standards for myself and have
worked tirelessly to accomplish my goals.

My experiences growing up gave me strong desire to go into the field of

education, spe ifically working with our bilingual students. I have earned a Masters
of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist Certification
(EC-12) and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Bilingual Elementary Education. I
have worked in the field of Bilingual education for the past nine years as a Dual
Language teacher, reading specialist, intervention specialist and currently as a
Multilingual Curriculum Coordinator. My goal is to continue to further my
knowledge of bilingual studies, education and to continue to be an advocate for
our programs.
