Sickle Cell Anemia Plan

Sean Hayden

1. Educate ALL staff on what sickle cell anemia is and what are
some signs and symptoms of it Sickle cell.

Sickle Cell-
A disease in which your body produces abnormally
shaped red blood cells. The cells are shaped like a crescent
or sickle. They don't last as long as normal, round red
blood cells. This leads to anemia. The sickle cells also get
stuck in blood vessels, blocking blood flow. This can cause
pain and organ damage.

Signs and Symptoms

Pain in joints and chest
Dizziness
Shortness of breath
Headaches
Feeling tired and weak
Paleness
Jaundice
Reason for Educational plan
If all staff members are aware of what Sickle cell
anemia is and they are able to spot it, they will be able aid
in keeping the athlete safe.

2. Blood Test all athletes to test for sickle cell. This is done in the
hopes of identifying those with this condition
3. Familiarize all members of the coaching staff, medical staff, and
even the equipment staff with athletes with this conditioning.
This will allow you to have eyes on all athletes with this trait as
much as possible.
4. Monitor daily weather conditions watching closely for days with
high heat and humidity. Days with high heat and humidity have
higher risk for sickle cell trait athletes to have adverse reactions
5. Based on the weather help design practice to have plenty of rest
and hydration breaks to help athletes with sickle cell to recover
between sets of the workouts
6. Meet with the coaching staff to make sure these breaks occur
and that the athletes are able to hydrate as needed.
7. Make sure athletes have access to proper hydration such as
water and gatorlytes throughout practice and breaks
8. Make sure to spread all staff out to insure that all athletes are
covered and that all athletes have access to water and gatorlytes
9. Athletes with sickle cell should be questioned regularly to see
how they are handling practice. This should be done because
sickle cell is a self limiting condition and most athletes will stop
because they feel that they cant go anymore.
10. Make sure all coaches know that when sickle athletes say
they cant go any more they are given proper care and arent
forced to return to play.
11. Keep a stocked medical tent with and Ice tub and an
oxygen tank in the event a sickle athlete needs it. Oxygen is very
important for these athletes.
12. Regulate overall workout of sickle athletes based on how
they feel, time of practice, and weather conditions
13. Weight charts can also help to monitor how much weight
an athlete lost during practice. This can be important when
looking at sickle kids to make sure they have enough water in
their system
