Standard Two
Know the content and how to teach it

Knowing the content and how to teach it is important so that all students in the school are being taught the same content and
meeting the curriculum outcomes. (Standard 2.1). Teaching the content in a logical order is important so students have been taught
the skills they need before moving on to another topic or concept. Especially within mathematics lessons, students need to know
how to do the work before they try it themselves and the students will need to practice before they have a summative assessment
on the topic. (Standard 2.2). Being able to plan an effective unit of work requires planning an end of unit assessment (summative)
as well as diagnostic and formative assessment through the entire unit of work. (Standard 2.2 and 2.3). In my professional
experience I liked to collect workbooks from every student once a week to know how the students are going with the work that is
being taught. (2.3 and 2.5). Having a sound understanding and respect of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is important
for all teachers, this can then effectively be taught to all students through integrated lessons regardless of the key learning area that
is being taught, having this understand is something that I believe is important regardless of whether I have any Aboriginal or Torres
Strait Islander students in my class. (Standard 2.4). Using various literacy and numeracy strategies is important for all teachers, this
will help students in the class who have different learning styles to myself or other students in the class. (Standard 2.5).
Incorporating information and communication technology into lessons helps to engage students throughout the lessons. Personally,
I like to use a PowerPoint presentation to pace the lesson and incorporate visuals for the more visually inclined students in the
class. (Standard 2.6).
