1st Implementation

Lesson Goals:
Students will be able to graph/write equations for systems of linear inequalities.
Students will effectively engage with the material without allowing technology to hinder
motivation
Students will be able to move variables in an equation in order to achieve slope-intercept form
Students will be able to find the solution set of a system of linear inequalities
Students will be able to explain their work to another person

Plan for the lesson:

Today we are going to continue our work with systems of linear inequalities. For todays work, I need
you all to assemble into groups of 4. When the group is assembled, I need each individual to sign
into the Kahoot discussion board. The plan is to work through this worksheet (displayed below), but
make sure you are able to explain your work; the content displayed on the worksheet is what each of
you will be assessed on the Kahoot site!
Maze Task
In the maze task, students will be asked to solve the linear inequalities and
graph the solution set in the respective coordinate plane. By doing this, the
shaded part of the solution will lead students to a door. The rationale for the
task is that students will use their knowledge of solving/graphing linear
inequalities in order to free themselves from the maze.
Sample Kahoot Question
Notes About The Kahoot
This was the first time I had used Kahoot in my classroom
Students were not warned previously that we would be using Kahoot
Only 17 out of my 30 students were able to sign into the program
Participation at the beginning of Kahoot was influenced by
unfamiliarity
Scores on the Kahoot reflected unfamiliarity, not knowledge of
content (Students were quizzed the next day on the material and the
average score was 88%)
Exit Slip With Student Responses
Was the use of Kahoot helpful to you or did it hinder your understanding of
linear inequalities? Explain
It didnt give me enough time to look over the answers
Yes it was helpful because I could check my answers to make sure I was
right
I didnt really understand some of the questions
The concept was good but the worksheet was the confusing part

These represent the most frequent responses by my students; this influenced

many of the changes we made to the activity.
Kahoot Participation
Changes
After Lesson Study I, we decided to change our goal:

New Goal: What are the benefits/pitfalls of using

technology in the classroom?
Using this, how can we tie technology into a lesson in order to make each
lesson more engaging and efficient? There is a pressure to use technology in
todays classroom, but we wanted to find out if this movement is necessary.
Findings
Technology must be be implemented with norms; just like classroom
norms are necessary.
Early implementation of technology (Kahoot) may not show actual student
understanding.
Kahoot Review vs. Average Quiz Score
Lack in preparation or implemented norms using technology (Kahoot) can
cause:
low participation
high student distraction
a lesson to steer away from intended lesson goals
Using technology effectively can increase student participation and
motivation.
Research Article (Borko, 2000)
One approach to staff development is to ground teachers learning
experiences in their own practice by conducting activities at school sites, with
a large component taking place in individual teachers classrooms.

- Obviously, this is the reason we do the Lesson Study, but these words
resonated with us now that we have our own classroom. We were able to
feel the impact the Lesson Study has because of the ownership; we all
want to create better lessons so that our students can be more
successful.
Research Article (Borko, 2000)
Despite claims about the power of new technologies to transform education,
the actual use of computers in schools has been rather limited.

-We observed this firsthand during our lesson study. This statement fueled
some of the conclusions we made.
Conclusion
There must be concise rules and norms for using technology in the
classroom.

Using technology in the classroom can be successful if used carefully.

Time Management
The teacher implementing the technology must be comfortable using
it and have practiced using it themself.

Students must know your expectations of how they should act when
in use of technology
Conclusion
Using technology must be intentional and repeated.

Be prepared for any hiccups in the technology

Students must have practice using the technology in the classroom before it can be
used to reach lesson goals more efficiently or for formative assessment.
Time Management
Does using the technology make sense in the scope of your class or lesson goals?
Does the use of technology give you as a teacher a good sense of student
knowledge if they do not know how to use the technology?
Future Implementation
Various studies have found that using technology, including computers, personal tablets, and
smartphones, is effective in improving students engagement and active participation in
classrooms.*
The use of individual devices and computers can enhance a teachers ability to solicit active
participation from all students during lessons, incorporate Internet resources, and evaluate
students progress.*
As technology continually expands in the world today, its growth in use in schools is inevitable.
When using Kahoot for future lessons, teachers must:
Be over-prepared
Be very familiar with using Kahoot
Familiarize students with Kahoot repeatedly before using it for formative
assessment
Be intentional with its use to effectively reach lesson goals

*(Kim & Reeves, 2007; Koile & Singer, 2006; Rogers & Cox, 2008).
Revised Implementation
Lesson Goals:
Students will be able to write linear equations in slope-intercept form
Students will be able to graph linear equations in slope-intercept form
Students will be able to write equations for horizontal and vertical lines in slope-intercept form
Students will be able to graph horizontal and vertical lines
Students will make connections between rate of change from the previous lesson to m in the
slope-intercept form

Plan for the lesson:

For this days lesson we started out with a warm-up activity about slope so that students can make
the connection of slope to m in slope intercept form. Once we reviewed the topic we proceeded to
the lesson slide the students are used to having. During the slides there were many Think, Pair,
Share opportunities for solving our example problems. Once we have gone through the lesson
slides there will be opportunities to clarify any issues before we proceeded to the Kahoot. Kahoot
was used to check whether students were clear on what we had just gone over before going home
and working on their assignment.
Notes About The Kahoot
This was not the first time I had used Kahoot in the classroom, but it had not
been implemented with this group of students since the first two weeks of
school
Students were told the day of that we would be using Kahoot
Only 23 out of my 29 students were able to sign into the program, but
there were students with dead or no phone
These students grouped up with others to work together.
Participation was not an issue in this implementation
Scores on the Kahoot showed that students understood the material
before proceeding to their assignment
