Math 1040
Project Part 3

Before you begin, what do you think your results will be? Explain.
I do not believe that height can be used to predict the number of candies that will be in a bag of skittles
that they purchase. I believe this due to how there is no linked factor between amount of skittles in a bag
and the height of the individual who purchased the bag. It is out of pure coincidence that the individual
buys the bag they bought, and height does not play a role in the influence of the purchased item. There is
no correlation and or causation. Simply, height and total are independent of one another.
Determine which is the explanatory variable and which is the response variable based on
the research question above.
Height would be the explanatory variable and amount of candies per bag would be the response variable.
Graph
Is there a significant relationship between the two variables? Report the value of the
correlation coefficient and the correct critical value for determining whether there is a
significant relationship. Is this what you expected when you thought about what the results
would be before analyzing the data? Explain.
Correlation Coefficient: 0.1664822
Critical Value: 0.2335
Explanation: The correlation coefficient is low, showing that there is not a direct correlation
between the data points involving height and total of candy. Since it is positive, but still closer to
zero, it has a very weak linear correlation. Resulting in no significant relationship.

Using the same regression output, give the regression equation. Based on the regression
equation, how many candies would be expected to be in a bag purchased by someone who is
63.5 inches tall? Was it appropriate to use this regression equation to make this prediction?
Why or why not?
Regression Equation: y= 0.0995x + 53.1257
Work: y = 0.0995 (63.5) + 53.1257 = 59.44395
Appropriate?: It is not appropriate to use the regression equation to make this prediction due to how
there is no relationship between the height and total amount of candies. As seen in the graph provided on
page one, someone with a height of 63.5 could have had a total of 60 or 61, not 59. 59.44395 is very close
to the mean of total candies(59.78) but is only applicable to an individual who is 63.5 inches. For
example, if the height 75 was put into the equation it would be 53.87195, which would show a correlation
that with a taller height the total candies decreases. The data provided when entered into this regression
equation is not beneficial and it is not appropriate to calculate it in this manner.

Using the regression output, give the value for R2 and interpret its meaning.
R2= (0.1664822)^2 = 0.0277163229 = 2.8%
R2, the coefficient of determination, tells you how close the data set fits to the regression line. Since this
number is closer to zero than one or negative one, it indicates that the model explains none of the
variability around the mean. Simply put, if the answer was closer to one, it would have a more precise fit
to the data points of the regression line. Thus, there is very little correlation between the height and the
total candies.
Assume there is a significant relationship between height and number of candies per bag.
Would it be appropriate to predict the number of candies in a bag purchased by retired
Houston Rockets player Yao Ming, who is 90 inches tall? Why or why not?
It would not be appropriate to predict the number of candies in a bag purchased by Yao Ming. His height,
fifteen inches above the tallest in the class sample, would be considered an outlier in the data, skewing the
results. Its beyond the provide data and would not be appropriate.
Enter the 2nd row and every 10th value after that into your calculator and report the
correlation coefficient and regression equation. Give the appropriate critical value and
state whether or not there is a significant linear relationship between X and Y for this
smaller data set.
Correlation Coefficient: r = 0.2805752076
Regression Equation: y = 0.2047x + 46.0936
Critical Value: 0.592
Explanation: There is still no linear relationship between X and Y for this smaller data set.
