THE ROBIN

WHAT A ROBIN IS

The robin is a bird that has an orange or red breast. It usually eats insects. He normaly
eats flies, spiders and worms but when its wintertime they eat berries and fruit. It is
found across Europe, east to Western Siberia and south to North Africa.Long ago,
people gave human names to birds , the bird was called robin. Robin was a diminutive
of Robert.

The adult European robin is 12.514.0 cm. Males are very territorial. They will attack
other birds if they come close to their territory.

The robin is diurnal. His nest is composed of moss, leaves and grass. They can lay from
five to six eggs.

Male robins usually start their morning song an hour before sunrise, and usually finish
their daily singing around thirty minutes after sunset.

BIRDS

Birds are warm-blooded vertebrates (vertebrates have backbones) and are the only
animals with feathers. Feathers are important to birds because they keep them warm,
help them to fly, and provide camouflage. Birds have also hollow bones and make them
lighter.Although all birds have wings, a few species can't fly. Kiwis, ostriches and
penguins cannot fly.

Bird diet can be very different from one specie to another. Some of them like eating
insects, others like eating plants and there are others that like eating animals like the
eagles.. Depending what they eat their beaks are sharper or blunter.

MIGRATIONS

Some birds like migrating for example storks.Migration is the movement of an animal
from one region to another. This happens at regular periods of time, and during a
particular season. Animals migrate in order to breed, grow, find food or avoid cold
weather. For birds, this occurs twice a year. They migrate in the spring and again in the
fall.

During the long days of the northern summer, birds have more hours to feed their young
o
with insect. But as the days shorten during autumn and food is not so easy to find, some
birds migrate south.
Not all birds migrate. There are some species that survive winter while staying in the
Northern Hemisphere. These are pigeons, crows, ravens and blackbirds.

WHY I LIKE BIRDS

I like birds because they have beautiful colours in their feathers. They are really
pretty. You can see many tropical birds as parrots. I remember seeing the movie Rio
where a lot of parrots appeared and see thow colourful they were.

I like birds as well because they are very different There are big ones as ostriches and
flamingos and smaller ones like sparrows or mocking birds.

I also like listening to their songs. Each bird sings in a very particular way. There are
even birds that can speak some words!!

I remember we went to a bird observatory with our class and I could learn a lot of things
about owls an other birds that live in the north of Madrid. It was awsome!!

This summer I am going to go to Faunia with my family and I am going to see a lot of
animals apart from birds.
