Mumbai: Unruly passengers
delaying Air India flights may
soon have to pay hefty fees up to
Rs 15 lakh and face immediate

ints.
The airline is planning to fi-
ne Rs 5 lakh for delaying a flight
up to an hour; Rs 10 lakh for de-
lay between one and two hours
and Rs 15 lakh for delaying be-
yond two hours. The airline to-
ok this step after three cases of
high-handedness by MPs in re-
cent past.
In November 2015, a YSR
Congress MP assaulted an AI
officer at Tirupati. Last month,
Shiv Senas Ravindra Gaikwad
had beat up a 60-year-old staffer
with sandals and tried to push
him out of the plane at Delhi
airport. And then a TMC MP de-
layed a flight over seats.
AIs proposal for levying fi-
nes on unruly passengers who
delay flights lays down the pro-

They will have to first inform
the airport manager and then
the complaint will go right up to
the chairmans office. Police
complaint will be filed immedi-
ately under relevant sections of
the IPC. The property damaged

based on actual damage caused
or losses incurred but a symbo-
lic amount to be charged from
unruly flyers. AI wants strong
deterrents to be in place for un-
ruly flyers.
However, common flyers
and even some AI employees
wonder if the Maharaja will be
allowed to levy these fines on
VVIPs if they delay flights gi-
ven the governments soft
handling of the Gaikwad epi-
sode. Meekly buckling in to
Shiv Sena pressure, the avia-
tion ministry had ordered an
unwilling AI and other airlines
to start flying him again. While
a common unruly flyer will be
jailed for such acts, the dignita-
ries went scot free.
These VVIP episodes and
the lack of any action against
lawmakers saw AI staff morale
taking a hit. The airline is keen
to boost the morale of employe-
es and is working on a number
of steps for this.
