Foreword

Micro Automation Set 27 ID Number: 27058037

Foreword
Micro Automation Sets are functional and tested automation configurations
based on A&D standard products for easy, fast and inexpensive
implementation of automation tasks for small-scale automation. Each of the
available Micro Automatic Sets covers a frequently occurring subtask of a
typical customer application in the lower performance range.
The sets help you obtain answers with regard to required products and the
question how they function when combined.
However, depending on the system requirements, a variety of other
components (e.g. other CPUs, power supplies, etc.) can be used to
implement the functionality on which this set is based. For these
components, please refer to the corresponding SIEMENS A&D catalogs.

1 Fields of Application and Benefits

Automation problem
The flow of goods in a middle-class company is to be monitored. The goods
are to be captured at different points by means of a Data Matrix code
scanner. The flow of goods in the company is as shown below.

To be able to trace the flow of goods, the goods are captured at the

interfaces of the different departments with a Data Matrix code scanner.

The flow of goods is recorded in a database.
To keep the complexity of the Micro Automation Set low, only the incoming
goods department is considered.

In addition, wireless use of the code scanner is to be made possible for

bulky goods. The data is to be temporarily buffered in the code scanner.
After reconnecting the code scanner to the PLC, all scanned data is to be
transferred to the controller and to the database.

Fields of Application and Benefits

Micro Automation Set 27 ID Number: 27058037

Fields of application
This configuration is particularly suitable for:
The use of code readers in harsh industrial environments
In classic track & trace applications
In fields of applications in which, compared to a classic PC, costs can
be saved by using S7-200 and text display
Applications requiring the local automation of additional tasks (e.g.,
conveyor belt)
Applications with central data management and distributed scanner
stations

Typical areas of application

The handheld code readers can be used in industrial and commercial
applications in which single parts have to be identified/localized, in which
the parts can be identified by a Data Matrix code or a bar code and in which
a handheld code reader to be flexibly positioned is required.

Fields of Application and Benefits

Micro Automation Set 27 ID Number: 27058037

Benefits
Cost savings by using existing automation equipment or equipment that
is necessary anyway to additionally apply the code reading applications.
Option of data preprocessing in the controller, which enables the user to
reduce the communication load to the database.
The controller can be the access point to the automation network of the
production. This allows, for instance, for the code reader to be
integrated into the production network (for example, Profibus or
AS-Interface).
Compared to classical PC solutions, the S7-200 automation controller has
the following remarkable features:
For low requirements, the classic PC for code reading applications can
be replaced by a more cost-effective S7-200.
Higher fault tolerance of the automation controller.
Automatic restart and secure data management of the automation
controllers in the event of a power failure.

The S7-200 does not require maintenance with regard to virus scanners
and firewall.

4 Principle of Operation
This chapter conveys the basic principle of operation of the Micro
Automation Set.
Micro Automation Set 27 offers two different modes:
Single Scanning (with cable connection)
Buffered Scanning, wireless scanning

4.1 Single Scanning

To provide a rough overview, a simplified principle of operation of this mode

is shown below.

1. The Data Matrix code is scanned.
2. The code reader captures the image and decodes the information and
outputs this information at the serial interface of the reader.
3. The S7-200 collects the information and buffers/processes it.
4. Using the CP 243-1, the S7-200 provides the information to the PC
database via Industrial Ethernet and PC-Access, the OPC server.
5. The PC searches the database for scanned information and returns the
product designation to the controller as plain text. In addition, the flow of
goods is archived.
6. The text display reads the scanned product ID and the product
designation communicated by the database from the controller.

V1.0 16.11.2007 12/32

Principle of Operation

Micro Automation Set 27 ID Number: 27058037

4.1.1 Scanning the Data Matrix code

The optical detection of the Data Matrix code corresponds to the basic
method of functioning of a camera.
To enable scanning also for difficult lighting conditions, the Data Matrix
code is illuminated by means of LEDs.
Scanning the Data Matrix code requires that the laser beam of the decoder
be aligned to the center of the Data Matrix code. The laser beam appears
when pressing the button on the HawkEye.

4.1.2 Decoding and output of the Data Matrix code

The reader analyzes the matrix by means of the specification for Data
Matrix codes and converts the information to an ASCII string.
Figure 4-2

12345678
Copyright Siemens AG 2007 All rights reserved

The start of the ASCII string with the data is delimited with a comma and
Set27_DocTech_V1D0_en.doc

the end of the string is delimited with a <CR><LF> (carriage return and line
feed).
Figure 4-3

12345678 ,12345678<CR><LF>

The data is sent via the serial interface.

4.1.3 Receiving and processing information

By the sample program, the S7-200 is configured in such a way that all
data (located between a comma and a <CR>) is received.
The actual string is extracted, stored in the memory area and thus provided
to the database.
Figure 4-4

,12345678<CR><LF> VB300 12345678

The S7-200 now waits for the database to assign the string and to provide it
to the S7-200 as plain text.

V1.0 16.11.2007 13/32

Principle of Operation

Micro Automation Set 27 ID Number: 27058037

4.1.4 Information on the text display

The TD 400C is used for displaying selected S7-200 data. In this mode
(Single Scanning), the last string sent to the database and the received
associated plain text are displayed.

4.1.5 Data exchange between PC database and S7-200

Aside from the controller, two products are involved in the data exchange
between PC world and automation world:
CP 243-1 communications processor for the connection to Industrial
Ethernet
PC-Access OPC server for S7-200

Ethernet CP
The CP 243-1 is used to connect the S7-200 to Industrial Ethernet. The
CP 243-1 supports TCP/IP and enables communication with the PC.

OPC server and database

Copyright Siemens AG 2007 All rights reserved

The OPC server uses the Ethernet connection and can access the data of
the automation controller. The data in turn is forwarded to an OPC client
Set27_DocTech_V1D0_en.doc

(MS Access database).

In addition to the string with the data, the database also evaluates a
communication interface (consisting of two bytes). If the New String
command and Search in Database are detected here, the string is read
from the OPC server.

After detecting the Read command of the communication interface, the

database reads the string and searches for it in the database. If the string is
found, the product designation is written to the OPC server.

4.1.7 Display of the product designation on the TD 400C text display

By updating the product designation in the OPC server, the product

designation is available in the data block of the S7-200.
The text display obtains the product designation for display also from the
data block and thus provides the current product designation.

4.2 Wireless scanning into the HawkEye HK 40 buffer

When using an accumulator, the handheld reader also enables wireless

scanning into a buffer.
This means that the scanner stores all data internally. When a cable
connection is detected, the data is sent and cleared from the buffer.
The following section provides a simplified description of this step.

4.2.3 Receiving and processing information

See chapter 4.1.3

When the HawkEye HE 40 is connected to the controller, all buffered data
is transferred. The S7-200 waits until all scanned strings are assigned in
the database and until the stored plain text is sent back to the S7-200.

4.2.6 Archiving in the database

The data in the database is only archived. In this mode, it is not necessary
to display the product designation on the display as plain text.

5 Configuring the Startup Software

5.1 Preliminary remark

For the startup we offer you software examples with test code and test
parameters as a download. The software examples support you during the
first steps and tests with your Micro Automation Sets. They enable quick
testing of the hardware and software interfaces between the products
described in the Micro Automation Sets.
The software examples are always assigned to the components used in the
set and show their basic interaction. However, they are not real applications
in the sense of technological problem solving with definable properties.

The software examples are available on the HTML page from which you
