Title: Fractions

Grade Level(s): 3rd (2nd grade goes to a different room for math)
Subject: Math-Fractions

Time Requirements: 60-90 minutes

Materials List:
white board
markers
fraction pizza/eggs
magnetic fraction circles
fraction blocks
problem set worksheet from Engage NY

3.NF.1 Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts;
understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

Instructional Objective: I can compare unit fraction sizes by using manipulates.

Language Objective: SWBAT understand the approaches of others to solving complex

problems and identify correspondences between different approaches. SWBAT discuss
problem by using math terms.

Active Instructional Plan:

Lesson Introduction/Anticipatory Set:
Students do bell work that is an exit ticket from the lesson before.
Students sit on the rug and practice fluency by answering greater or less than
when shown a fraction to compare to 1 whole.
Students will listen to an application problem and help me work through it on the
white board.
Main Lesson Tasks/Activities:
I Do: I will show how to compare fraction strips, which will be on the problem set. I
will also show students how to use fraction blocks.
We Do: We will work together to compare fraction strips/blocks and fraction circles
(separately). Students who understand may begin working on problem set
worksheet.
You Do: Students who have an understanding of comparing unit fractions may
begin the problem set worksheet and may ask for help if needed. Other students
may continue to work on the rug with me to or with a partner if they can be
responsible and respectful.
Closure: If time permits we will come together to discuss the problem set, homework, and issues or
things we noticed. I want students to reflect on the lesson and experience.

Assessment/Evaluation: Observation, can collect problem set but homework is normally

collected the next day along with the bell work.
