2. Ten patients at a doctors surgery wait for the following lengths of times (in minute) to see their doctor.
(a) What are the mean, median and mode for these data?
(b) What measure of central tendency would you use here?
3. The hospitalized cost of fracture (in $AUS) for 29 patients in Dubbo is as follows: 5373, 15984, 7478, 3446,
11004, 9116, 3213, 5418, 16386, 2857, 3656, 61876, 2972, 3057, 14449, 9400, 27518, 23278, 23548, 3016, 12921,
4640, 4644, 23098, 2654, 7975, 10245, 4045, 5018.
Construct a histogram of distribution of cost (you may use 5000-interval such as 5000-10000, 10001-15000,
15001-20000 etc.)
Calculate the mean, standard deviation, median, coefficient of variation, coefficient of skewness, illustrates
the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles, often called the lower quartile, the middle quartile (median) and the
upper quartile, respectively and comment on the distribution of data.
4. The lengths of time, in minutes, that 10 patients waited in a doctors office before receiving treatment were
recorded as follows: 5, 11, 9, 5, 10, 15, 6, 10, 5,and 10. Treating the data as a random sample, find:
(a) the mean;
(b) the median;
(c) the mode.
5. The reaction times for a random sample of 9 subjects to a stimulant were recorded as 2.5, 3.6, 3.1, 4.3, 2.9.
2.3, 2.6, 4.1, and 3.4 seconds. Calculate:
(a) the mean;
(b) the median.
8. The following table gives the percentage of the weight that was recycled for each of the categories.
(a) Use a bar chart to display the percent recycled for these materials. Use the order of the materials given
in the table above.
(b) Make another bar chart where the materials are ordered by the percent recycled, largest percent to
smallest percent.
(c) Which bar chart, (a) or (b), do you prefer? Give a reason for your answer.
(d) Explain why it is inappropriate to use a pie chart to display these data.
9. Public transportation and the automobile are two methods an employee can use to get to work each day.
Samples of times recorded for each method are shown. Times are in minutes.
Public Transportation: 28 29 32 37 33 25 29 32 41 34
Automobile: 29 31 33 32 34 30 31 32 35 33
(a) Compute the sample mean time to get to work for each method.
(b) Compute the sample standard deviation for each method.
(c) On the basis of your results from parts (a) and (b), which method of transportation should be preferred?
Explain.
(d) Develop a box plot for each method. Does a comparison of the box plots support your conclusion in part
(c)?
10. The National Association of Realtors reported the median home price in the United States and the increase
in median home price over a five-year period (The Wall Street Journal, January 16, 2006). Use the sample
