Standards: 4.OA.1, SMP, GMP 1.3, SMP2, GMP 2.1, GMP 2.2
Objective: Students decide how to divide an area of land into parts based on a number story and
write a fraction addition equation to represent the partitioning.
Before the lesson: Solve the open response, problem and consider how students might interpret
the problem. If possible, schedule time to review a students work and plan for Day 2 of this
lesson with your grade-level team.
Vocabulary: fraction addition equations
1. Warm-Up (5 min):
a. Mental Math and Fluency: students record multiplicative comparison equations
2. Focus (55-65 min):
a. Math Message: students find combinations of fraction circles that make up 1
whole and write fraction addition equations
b. Fraction Sums of One: students share their combinations of fractions circles that
make 1 whole and their fraction addition equations
c. Solving the Open Response Problem: students show how to divide an area of land
into fractional parts based on a number story and write a fraction addition
equation to represent the partitioning
