A. Describe briefly the main responsibilities you will have to take on when working as

OOW.

The main responsibility of a OOW is the safe navigation of the ship as per

COLREGS 1972, complying w ith the mandatory rules like the ISM, ISPS and company

SMS(now know n as IMS), follow Standing Orders(Master, Chief Officer/Engineer) and

assist Master during anchorage operations. During port stay he shall perform cargo

w atch as per C/O orders, inform him about any suspicious activity or non-conformities

and participate in the mooring operations during maneuvering. After the OOW finishes

his w atch he shall make additional duties safety, security and environmental checks.

B. Describe the assessment schedule you have fixed with your DSTO, Master or Chief

Engineer for the remaining 3 months in order to evaluate your potential for

promotion to OOW position.

Master and DSTO have formulated some training schedules for me, to

achieve OOW potential before ending my cadetship program. They frequently

assess me through Bridge Manual of SMS/IMS, during mooring operations, and

by giving me various admin, safety and maintenance jobs to increase my

practical knowledge. Presently I am doing daily task with the Safety Officer to

improve my knowledge in firefighting equipment and lifesaving appliances.

describe how you can perform the duties required.

COLREGS application under restricted visibility inside TSS

The OOW should inform Master about the state of visibility and

engineers to stay on standby for maneuvering. He shall avoid altering

course to port side unless overtaking as per Rule 19, use all the available

means of detecting vessels such as radars as per Rule 5, he shall proceed

at all times at a safe speed according to Rule 6, determine the risk of

collision with the CPA, BCR and SPL as per Rule 7. He shall make the

course alterations in ample time and sufficient sea room to avoid collision

as per Rule 10. To achieve an even safer navigation he shall implement

also the SMS/IMS Bridge cards 120/121/140/200.
