And how did the Prairie style emerged from the precedent architectural styles

in America?

The Prairie style of architecture emerged in the Midwestern United States, with the
leading architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Heavily influenced by the Arts & crafts
movement in the east (japan). At the same time, there was the Arts & Crafts
movement in England (came from the anxieties caused by the Industrial Revolution
and the need for the revaluation of handcraftsmanship and pre-capitalist forms of
culture and society. Arts and Crafts designers sought to improve standards of
decorative design, believed to have been debased by mechanization, and
to create environments in which beautiful and fi ne workmanship governed.
The Arts and Crafts movement did not promote a particular style, but it did
advocate reform as part of its philosophy and instigated a critique of
industrial labor; as modern machines replaced workers, Arts and Crafts
proponents called for an end to the division of labor and advanced the
designer as craftsman.
The British movement was inspired by A.W.N Pugin (Gothic Revival,
industrialization) and John Ruskin (medieval architecture). The American
movement was linked to the British one. During this movement, there was
no single philosophy, it was diversity that preserved this movement.
(emphasis on ornamentation, decorating the interiors, open-planned
interiors,..)
Frank Lloyd Wright had a diff erent take on the designed environment. He
was influenced by the Japanese Arts & Crafts movement. His architectural
style is expressed by low-pitched roofs, open interiors, horizontal lines and
the use of natural materials that suggests Wrights approach on organic
architecture.
