Man has not been born on the earth to eat and drink and sleep, as all the lower creatures do,
but he has been born on earth to learn how to utilize this fertile earth to its best advantage,
how to appreciate the treasures this earth holds and how to use them rightly, and it is in this
that man becomes connected with the earth. The soul that comes from heaven - its
connection with the earth has in it a secret which leads towards the purpose of life. It is easy
for a person to say, "We come from heaven and we are bound to heaven, and while four days
dwelling on this earth what is there that belongs to us ? Besides, is it not sinful, all that
belongs to the earth? It is better to escape from it and leave all this which in the end is of no
worth". It is true, but it is not natural. The natural thing is to know how to appreciate all that
is created on the earth. We appreciate it by valuing it.

The beauty of the mineral kingdom which one sees in the jewels and gems, one better than
the other, is not something to be overlooked: to see that through a stone divine light shines
and makes that stone incomparably greater than the pebbles on the road. How wonderful a
phenomenon that even in a stone God shows His beauty. The perfume of flowers, the
sweetness of fruits, the delicious tastes that different objects of the earth have, it seems that
they were not created for no purpose. In gold, in silver, in metal, in all objects we see in the
world, there seems to be a certain purpose to be accomplished here, and the one who is afraid
of it - that it will take hold of him - runs away. And what does he do ? He loses both heaven
and earth. He has left heaven already; he is leaving the earth. The one who holds it, is buried

under it; it grows on him and swallows him. That is another aspect of the earth and the love
of the earth. But the one who understands the purpose of the earth and of its treasures utilizes
them to the best advantage, not only for himself but for his fellow-men. It is that person who
has lived in this world fulfilling the purpose of his life.

Do we only see spiritual persons among those who are sitting in the caves of the mountains of
the Himalayas ? Do we not see wonderful personalities in the midst of the world ? Very often
people say that a person who has struggled along all through his life with business and
industry and worldly things has become hardened, but I think that the one who has really
gained victory over the earth, who really has made a success which can be called a success,
has learned something from it. It is not everyone who becomes successful in earthly affairs, it
is one among many. And the one who comes to the top has had his difficulties, has had his
problems, his endurance, his patience have been tested; he has gone through a sacrifice; he
has understood human nature standing in the midst of the market. If he has not read one
book of philosophy, if he has not meditated one day, still he has arrived at a plane, at an
understanding where he knows something worth knowing.

I considered myself most privileged at times when I had a conversation with business men,
with persons who always busied themselves with the things of the earth and who have really
reached to the top, and I have simply marvelled to think that, instead of hardening them, it
has softened their nature to some extent. It has given them a sense which can come by
spiritual understanding which is a religious sense; it has developed a fairness in them. By
having gone through this world of injustice and having seen in the business world what one
sees, they have come to a point of honesty where they begin to see life from a different point
of view. And besides that, if anyone ever comes forward and says, "For a philanthropic
purpose, for the good of humanity I give so many millions for education, for hospitals", it is
they who do it. And I would very much wonder if a recluse who had always kept himself away
from money, if he had the charge of many millions, would have liked to part with some. The
only idea is that, whether a purpose is earthly or heavenly, to be true to the purpose of life is
the first moral we have to learn. For even an earthly purpose, however material it may seem,
will prove in the end to be a stepping-stone if one has nothing but that ideal before one.

No doubt all things pertaining to the earth have their influence upon a person. They harden
one, they make one's heart cold and take away that tender sentiment that a person has
towards his dear ones, towards those whom he loves and on whom he depends, towards his
fellow-men. It makes one more and more greedy, and greed makes one unjust. Man becomes

avaricious and covetous, and this cup of desire is never filled. One is never satisfied; The
more that comes, the less there seems to be there. Nevertheless, if one does not go through
this experience which is man's test and one makes another way to cross, then one has given
up a great experience, an experience which really makes the soul noble. A person whom
otherwise you may not have understood for ten years, you can understand in one day as soon
as there is a money question. It at once brings out what is hidden in that person. This shows
that it is a great test, a test through which one should go, and one should experience a path
which is a part of one's destiny.

Therefore, the religious or spiritual man, even if he looks with contempt at a person engaged
in the things of the earth, must know that it is his path, and a path which is his religion. If he
proves to be honest in his business dealings, if he keeps his heart open to those near and dear
to him, those to whom he has his obligations, if he keeps the flame of his love of mankind lit
in his heart throughout it all, in the end he will arrive at a stage where he is greater than a
saint, because he has kept alive the flame of saintliness through a continually blowing wind.

We must not always try to get away from difficulties, for in the end we shall not manage to get
away from them. Life on earth is difficult, and with the evolution of the earth it will become
even more difficult; every day it will be more difficult. What we can do is to make ourselves
strong enough to go through the life on earth, and it is only by this strength of conviction
that, through whatever path we journey, we shall arrive at the spiritual goal. And whatever be
our life - professional, industrial or commercial, it does not matter - we shall live religion,
nature's religion, turning our life into a religion, making of our life a religion. And so even
with every earthly success we shall be taking steps forward towards spiritual attainment.

Question : Why will life on earth become even more difficult with the earth's evolution ?

Answer : We may take the world as a human being - picture it for instance as a human being
making his life from infancy to age. In infancy, however much the infant is dependent, yet he
is a sovereign, quite happy in the arms of the mother, in the care of the father - nothing to
worry him, nothing to trouble him, no attachment, no enmity; he is as happy as angels in
heaven. So was the beginning of the world, the beginning of the human race especially. The
Hindus have called it the Golden Age. Then comes youth; youth with its spring and delicacy,
with its responsibility together with it. Youth has its own trials, its own experiences, its own
fears. This unsettled condition of the earth was called by the Hindus the Silver Age, which
means the age with all the treasures, that spring-time of youth. But then as life goes forward,
the world comes into the stage of what may be called middle age, the age of cares, of worries,
of anxieties, of responsibilities. The Hindus have named it the Copper Age. And as life
advances, so it has much to bear. A fruitful tree with the weight of fruits becomes bent, and so
it is with progress. With every step forward there are obligations and responsibilities.

Nevertheless, we must not look forward to difficulties. There is one thing that saves us and
that is hopefulness. All this about which I have spoken is the metaphysical part. What I am
speaking about now is the psychological attitude we ought to have: always hope for the best
and we certainly shall have the best.

Question : What is the best action for someone connected with business matters, who is not the
principal actor in a transaction and disapproves of details, but feels it would be unwise to cut
the connection completely ?

Answer : He is not the man in question; he is a man quite apart from the subject, because he is
not doing his duty. He is not giving his heart and soul to the work. That is the test, that is
where he learns. If he does not learn from details, if he keeps himself apart, then he is
nowhere.

Question : As long as he refuses to accept responsibilities ?

Answer : Yes, responsibility, that is the idea. I would prefer a person either retiring absolutely
from responsibility or accepting all consequences and being responsible for everything in his
life. And in everything in life for which he can be responsible, he must not depend upon
others, because it all teaches him a lesson. What is our daily life ? Even the smallest thing in
everyday life is a lesson for us to learn, and we must make the best of our opportunity.
However small and unimportant a work that comes along in life - it is not something to be
rejected; it is something to be met with. All that is done is accomplished. If it has not done
anything else, it has given us some experience and that is worth it.

L'homme n'est pas n sur terre pour manger et boire et dormir, comme le font toutes
les cratures infrieures, mais il est n sur terre pour apprendre comment utiliser cette
terre fertile au meilleur avantage de celle-ci, comment apprcier les trsors que cette
terre contient et comment bien les utiliser, et c'est en cela que l'homme se relie la
terre. Pour l'me qui vient du ciel, sa liaison avec la terre recle un secret qui mne au
but de la vie. Il est facile pour quelqu'un de dire: "Nous venons du ciel et nous
sommes destins au ciel, et pour ces quelques jours que nous habitons sur la terre, qu'y
a-t-il l qui nous appartienne? D'ailleurs, n'est-ce pas charg de pch, tout ce qui
appartient la terre? Il vaut mieux s'en chapper et abandonner tout ce qui en
dfinitive n'a aucune valeur". C'est vrai, mais ce n'est pas naturel. Ce qui est naturel,
c'est de savoir comment apprcier tout ce qui est cr sur la terre. Nous l'apprcions en
l'estimant.

La beaut du rgne minral, que l'on voit dans les pierres prcieuses et les gemmes,
l'une suprieure l'autre, n'est pas quelque chose ngliger: de mme voir qu' travers
une pierre, c'est la lumire divine qui brille et rend cette pierre incomparablement plus
noble que les cailloux de la route. Quel phnomne merveilleux que, mme dans une
pierre, Dieu montre Sa beaut! Le parfum des fleurs, la douceur des fruits, les gots
dlicieux que prsentent diffrents objets de la terre, ne semblent pas avoir t crs
sans aucun but. Dans l'or, dans l'argent, dans le mtal, dans tous les objets que nous
voyons dans le monde, il semble qu'il y ait un certain but accomplir. Et celui qui les

craint, qui a peur qu'ils ne le possdent, s'enfuit d'eux. Et que fait-il? Il perd la fois le
ciel et la terre. Il a dj laiss le ciel, il abandonne la terre. Celui qui la possde est
enterr sous elle; elle profite de lui et l'avale. C'est un autre aspect de la terre et de sa
loi. Mais celui qui comprend le but de la terre et de ses trsors les utilise au mieux, non
seulement pour lui-mme, mais pour son prochain. C'est cette personne-l qui vit dans
le monde en remplissant le but de sa vie.

Voyons-nous des personnes spirituelles seulement parmi celles qui se tiennent dans les
cavernes des montagnes de l'Himalaya? Ne voyons-nous pas d'admirables
personnalits au milieu du monde? Bien souvent des gens disent que quelqu'un qui a
lutt tout au long de sa vie dans les affaires et l'industrie et les occupations du monde
s'est endurci, mais je pense que celui qui a rellement gagn la victoire sur la terre, qui
a rellement fait un succs que l'on peut appeler un succs, en a appris quelque chose.
Ce n'est pas tout le monde qui russit dans les affaires de la terre, ce n'est qu'un parmi
beaucoup. Et celui qui arrive au sommet a eu ses difficults, a eu ses problmes; son
endurance, sa patience ont t prouves, il est pass par un sacrifice, il a compris la
nature humaine en se tenant au milieu du march. S'il n'a pas lu un seul livre de
philosophie, s'il n'a pas mdit un seul jour, pourtant il est arriv un plan, une
comprhension, o il connat quelque chose qui en vaut la peine.

Je considre avoir t trs privilgi lorsqu'en certaines occasions j'ai pu avoir une
conversation avec des hommes d'affaires, avec des gens qui s'occupaient sans cesse
des choses de la terre et qui avaient rellement atteint le sommet; et j'ai t proprement
stupfait de penser qu'au lieu de les endurcir, cela avait adouci en quelque sorte leur
nature. Cela leur avait donn un sens qui peut venir par la comprhension spirituelle,
qui est un sens religieux, cela avait dvelopp une droiture en eux. tant passs par ce
monde d'injustice et ayant vu dans le monde des affaires ce que l'on y voit, ils taient
arrivs un degr d'honntet o l'on commence considrer la vie d'un point de vue
diffrent. Et en outre, si jamais quelqu'un s'avance et dit: "Pour un but
philanthropique, pour le bien de l'humanit, je donne tant de millions pour l'ducation,
pour les hpitaux", c'est eux qui le font. Et cela m'tonnerait beaucoup qu'un reclus
qui se serait toujours tenu loin de l'argent, s'il avait la charge de nombreux millions,
aimt se sparer de quelques-uns d'entre eux. L'ide principale est que, qu'un but soit
terrestre ou cleste, tre loyal au but de la vie est la premire morale que nous avons
apprendre; car mme un but terrestre, aussi matriel qu'il puisse paratre, montrera la
fin qu'il est un tremplin si l'on n'a rien que cet idal-l devant soi.

Il est certain que toutes les choses qui appartiennent la terre ont leur influence sur
une personne. Elles endurcissent, elles rendent le cur froid et enlvent ce tendre
sentiment qu'une personne a envers ceux qu'elle chrit, envers ceux qu'elle aime et
desquels elle dpend, envers son prochain. Cela rend quelqu'un de plus en plus avide,
et l'avidit le rend injuste. L'homme devient avare et envieux, et cette coupe du dsir
n'est jamais remplie, il n'est jamais satisfait. Plus il en vient, moins il semble y en avoir.
Nanmoins, si l'on ne passe pas par cette exprience qui est l'preuve de l'homme, et
si l'on choisit d'aller par un autre chemin, alors l'on a laiss de ct une grande
exprience, une exprience qui rend rellement l'me noble. Quelqu'un que vous
n'avez pas compris pendant dix ans, vous pouvez le comprendre en un seul jour
aussitt qu'il est question d'argent. Cela fait aussitt sortir ce qui est cach dans cette
personne. Cela montre que c'est un test important, un test par lequel l'on doit passer, et
que l'on doit faire l'exprience d'un chemin qui est une partie de notre destine.

Par consquent, l'homme religieux ou spirituel, mme s'il regarde avec ddain une
personne engage dans les choses de la terre, doit savoir que c'est son chemin, et un
chemin qui est sa religion. S'il se prouve honnte dans son comportement en affaires,
s'il garde son cur ouvert envers ceux qui lui sont proches et chers, envers ceux pour
lesquels il a ses obligations, s'il garde allume dans son cur la flamme de son amour
pour l'humanit travers tout cela, la fin il arrivera un stade o il sera plus grand
qu'un saint parce qu'il aura garde vivante la flamme de la saintet malgr un vent qui
souffle sans cesse.

Nous ne devons pas toujours essayer d'chapper aux difficults car la fin nous ne
pourrons arriver leur chapper. La vie sur la terre est difficile, et avec l'volution de la
terre, cela deviendra encore plus difficile; chaque jour cela deviendra plus difficile. Ce
que nous pouvons faire est de nous rendre assez forts pour aller de l'avant dans la vie
sur la terre, et c'est seulement grce cette force de conviction que, quel que soit le
chemin sur lequel nous voyageons, nous arriverons au but spirituel. Et quelle que soit
notre vie - librale, industrielle ou commerciale, cela importe peu - nous vivrons la
religion, la religion de la nature, changeant notre vie en une religion. Et ainsi, mme
avec chaque succs terrestre, nous avancerons pas pas vers l'accomplissement
spirituel.

Question: Pourquoi la vie sur la terre deviendra-t-elle encore plus difficile avec l'volution
de la terre?

Rponse : Nous pouvons considrer la terre comme un tre humain; reprsentez-vous-la

par exemple comme un tre humain vivant sa vie de la petite enfance la vieillesse.
Dans la petite enfance, aussi dpendant que soit un enfant, pourtant il est comme un
souverain, parfaitement heureux dans les bras de sa mre, la charge de son pre; il n'y
a rien pour l'ennuyer, rien pour le perturber, aucun attachement, aucune inimiti; il est
heureux comme les anges au ciel. Tel tait le commencement du monde, le
commencement de la race humaine tout spcialement. Les Hindous l'ont appel l'Age
d'Or. Et puis vient la jeunesse, la jeunesse avec son printemps et sa dlicatesse, et aussi
avec la responsabilit qui y est mle. La jeunesse a ses propres preuves, ses propres
expriences, ses propres peurs. Cette condition trouble de la terre fut appele par les
Hindous l'Age d'Argent, ce qui veut dire l'ge de tous les trsors, le printemps de la
jeunesse. Mais mesure que la vie avance, le monde arrive au stade que l'on peut
appeler l'ge mr, l'ge des soucis, des ennuis, des anxits, des responsabilits. Les
Hindous l'ont appel l'Age de Cuivre. Et mesure que la vie avance, il y a davantage
supporter. Un arbre fruitier, avec le poids des fruits, se courbe, et il en est ainsi du
progrs. Avec chaque pas en avant, il y a des obligations et des responsabilits.

Nanmoins, nous ne devons pas attendre les difficults. Il y a une chose qui nous
sauve, et c'est l'espoir. Tout ce dont je viens de parler est l'aspect mtaphysique. Ce
dont je parle maintenant est l'attitude psychologique que nous devrions avoir: esprons
toujours le meilleur et nous aurons le meilleur.

Question: Quelle est la meilleure action pour quelqu'un d'engag dans les affaires qui
n'est pas l'acteur principal d'une transaction et en dsapprouve les dtails, mais sent
qu'il ne serait pas sage de rompre compltement la relation?

Rponse : Il n'est pas l'homme en question, il est un homme tout fait spar du sujet
parce qu'il n'est pas en train de faire son devoir. Il ne donne pas son cur et son me
au travail. C'est l le test, c'est l qu'il apprend. S'il n'apprend pas des dtails, s'il se
tient part, alors il n'est nulle part.

Question: Aussi longtemps qu'il refuse d'accepter des responsabilits?

Rponse : Oui, la responsabilit, c'est bien l'ide. Je prfrerais une personne ou bien se
retirant absolument des responsabilits, ou bien acceptant toutes les consquences et
tant responsable pour tout dans sa vie. Et en chaque chose de sa vie dont il peut tre
responsable, il ne doit pas dpendre des autres parce que tout cela lui enseigne une
leon. Qu'est notre vie quotidienne? Mme la plus petite chose dans la vie de tous les
jours est pour nous une leon apprendre, et nous devons tirer le meilleur parti de
notre occasion. Il n'y a rien dans le monde, aucun travail aussi petit et sans importance
qu'il se prsente dans la vie, que nous devions rejeter; c'est quelque chose que nous
devons affronter. Tout ce qui est fait est accompli. Si cela n'a rien fait d'autre, du moins
cela nous a donn quelque exprience, et cela en vaut la peine.
