Informal Math Assessment Example

Plan of Action: Carson is a 7th grade that is in the basic math class.
Talking with his teacher, she feels like Carson does well at adding,
subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. However, he really struggles
with knowing the correct order of solving multi-step problems. He also
does not know how to solve for story problems. Over the next few
weeks I am going to give Carson an informal math assessment to
determine what targeted math we need to work on. I will be meeting
with him twice this week to monitor his progress and at the beginning
of the following week I will give him a informal post assessment to see
if Carson made progress.

CCSS:
7.EE.A.1- Expression& Equation- Use properties of operations to
generate equivalent expressions.
7.EE.B.4- Expressions & Equations- Solve real-life and mathematical
problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.

Pre-assessment:

1. 7.EE.A.1. 4x-2=10 x=3

2. 7.EE.A.1. 4 (x-2)=12 x=5
3. 7.EE.B.4 2x-5>19 x>12
4. 7.EE.B.4 6x-12<3 x=3
5. 7.EE.A.1 -2(3x+6) -6x-12
6. 7.EE.A.1 x+x+x= 3x
7. 7.EE.A.1 (3+5b)-2 -10b-6
8. 7.EE.A.1 3x+5x 8x
9. 7.EE.A.1 -4(5x-8)= -20x+40
10. 7.EE.B.4
Tatesville has x inches of rainfall in April,
(x+1.3) inches of rainfall in May, and (2x+0.5) inches
in June. If x=2 inches, what is the amount of rainfall
in Tatesville during the three month period? 9.8
inches of rainfall in Tatersville.
Results of Pre-Test: The results of the pre-test shows that Carson
was able to answer 3 out of the 10 questions on the pretest correctly.
With the CCSS of 7.EE.A.1 he was able to get 2 out of the 7 correct.
Under the CCSS of 7.EE.B.4 he was able to get 1 out of 3 answers
correct.

Progress Monitoring:
Monday- During homework time Carson was pulled aside and taught
an explicit lesson on CCSS: 7.EE.A.1. I did the I do, we do, you do
strategy with him to help him get retention of the math equation. It
also helped me as a teacher see what steps in the equation he was not
quite understanding. He was given three math equations to work on by
himself. Out of the three equations Carson answered 2 out of the 3
correct.

Wednesday- During homework time Carson was pulled aside and

taught an explicit lesson on CCSS: 7.EE.B.4. He was given a story
problem and I used popsicle sticks as manipulative to teach him the
lessons. I also repeated the same teaching strategy of I do, we do,
you do. Carson was given 4 word problems and was able to get 2 out
of 4 correct.

Post Assessment:

1. 7.EE.A.1. 4x-2=10 x=3

2. 7.EE.A.1. 4 (x-2)=12 x=5
3. 7.EE.B.4 2x-5>19 x>12

rainfall in Tatesville during the three month period? 9.8 inches of

Post Assessment Results: The results of the post assessment show

that Carson was able to improve by getting 8 out of 10 problems
correct on his informal math assessment. Under standard 7.EE.A.1 he
was able to get 6 our of 7 correct and under standard 7.EE.B.4 he was
able to get 2 out of 3 correct.

Writing Results into the IEP:

PLOPS- Carson is a very fun and energetic boy. He always gets to

class on time and strives hard to pay attention during the lessons.
Carson is good with one step problems using addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division. Multi-step problems are harder for him
and he struggles with knowing the correct order of solving things.
Carson also struggles reading math story problems and knowing how
to correctly solve for them.

Baseline: When given a multistep equation, Carson is able to solve 3

out of 10 problems correctly in the basic level math class.

Goals- When given multistep equations, Carson will be able to solve 8

out of 10 problems with accuracy in the basic level math class by
March 8, 2018.
