Dear Parents,
This week in Readers Workshop, we will read,
Russ and The Firehouse To increase reading
comprehension, we will: Summarize (A good way to
understand a story is to think about the important key events
and the order in which they happen. We can retell the story
from beginning to end.)What happens to the characters is
called the plot.) Identify Main Idea and Details (Figuring out
a story's main idea, or what a story is mostly about, is
important to understanding a story. A book's details tell more
about its main idea.) Informational Text: Expository (text
that explains or gives information; often contains
photographs).
This week in Writers Workshop we are reviewing
question marks, periods and exclamation marks. We are also writing
letters. In Math are celebrating the 100th day of school. We will
read books, count 100 day projects and work on writing
assignments about the number 100! In Social Studies we will talk
about Groundhog Day and learn about goods and services, why
people work and needs and wants and money. In Science, we will
continue our study of Organisms and environments of animals with
a focusing on basic needs.
Wish List
We would love some leftover stationary, mix-matched or any
unused you can spare for our letter writing unit. We will be writing
so many letters!
!00th Day of School Celebration
The 100th Day of School is on Wednesday, February 1st.
You are invited to watch our parade at 2:20 in the main
hallway. Floats are due January 31st. We want to view them
in class and talk about them before the parade. The
collections of 100 items we are using in math daily should
already be turned in!
Live Lizards Presentation
I am sure your child has come home asking for a lizard now
after first wanting a hamster and a fish. Robert Brown,
Miles dad, brought a variety of lizards and natural habitats
to our classroom. Everyone learned so much. We used map
skills, learned about adaptations, defense mechanisms, diet,
habitats, characteristics, hobbies, research and too much
to list. Everyone had great questions and made so many
connections. We even got to pet one!
Snacks
We are running low. If your child eats the group snack and
you have not sent any in a while it is time!
Valentines Day Party
Our party will be on Tuesday, February 14th. Look for your
class list with instructions making valentine cards!
The cards will need to be at school before the 14th because
your child will be sorting his/her own cards as a language
arts lesson.
To pass the word wall assessment this nine
weeks your child must read 26 words and
this would earn a grade of 2 on the
report card

Expectations for this nine weeks assessments:
Help your child sound out words and write about a
topic of interest using details in a story and drawing
pictures to go with the words.
Use capitalization
Use punctuation
Use spacing between words
We will have assessments on the following skills this
nine weeks:
Count backwards from 20
Write numbers to 20
Counting by 10s to 100 orally
Identifying 3-d shapes
Writing first and last name
