TERM PAPER

Acoustics and lighting is an exact science and art. The architect who
has a working knowledge of these subject can plan adequately for the acoustics and
lighting of the buildings he designs. Architectural designing based on some
principles that will assure the construction of rooms and buildings which are free
from disturbing glare noises and which provide the optimum conditions for
reading, producing and listening to either speech or music. Functional acoustical
and lighting design demands scientific, aesthetic and practical planning. This term
paper is divided to two section. The first is the significance of lighting in
architecture because it is the first topic that wed discussed in class, then the
second is the acoustic.

LIGHTING
Light is the one of the most important factor in the appreciation and
understanding of Architecture. The relationship between light and architecture is
grounded in the principles of physics, it is about energy and matter but in some
particular case it also implies an emotional effect on people. The quality of lighting in a
space defines its character and creates impressions. The human eye perceives its form
through the incidence and reflection of light and in that way acquires information about
the ambiance in a given place. Visual impressions are interpreted in our brains and put
in context to create emotions that move us to take particular actions. In public spaces,
light provides a safe environment where people can meet and have a great diversity of
activities. Historic districts, squares, parks, pedestrian streets are all appreciated and
become useful thanks to good lighting.

It is important to first understand the visual needs of the users of a space. Lighting is
ultimately the energy that let us develop visual tasks like reading, identifying colors,
perceiving volumes, measuring distances and more.

Secondly, it is really relevant to analyze the space, its form and functions. As it was said
before, lighting will be different depending on the use given to a place. Surface finishes,
materials, shape, color, form, physical dimensions are key elements in the way that light
will react and then provide information and impressions.

There is no good solution of lighting without the use of the correct light source. It is not a
matter of using always the most technologically advanced fixture, not at all! It is about
selecting the right lamp for the place and moment that you need to illuminate

Finally, light as a form of energy used in architecture requires electricity. This means
that the use of light has an impact in the environment and therefore it is also essential to
plan and design the lighting in the most energy efficient way in order to preserve our
planet.

Acoustics
To support the activity in the room. Good room acoustics are seldom noticeable.
Since there are so many different activities that can take place in rooms there are
no such thing as universally good room acoustics. Each activity has its own
challenges, and consequently its own acoustic design. Depends on the space.
Some spaces need to be sonically dead, others need to be sonically live.

The importance of acoustics is not limited to classrooms. Noise in corridors and

public spaces can soar if they are too echo, with voices raised louder and louder to
overcome the background echo, just like shouting conversations at a noisy party or
restaurant. In addition, sound is an important navigational tool for people who are
blind or low vision, and either end of the reverberation scale can help them from
finding their way in a room or building.
