THE CITY OF HYDERABAD MAP OVERVIEW

I happen to live in Jefferson City, MO, USA. Fortunately, or unfortunately, not all cities around the world have seen equal
growth. Jefferson City is a place which has seen minimal growth over the last few decades. Hence I have chosen
Hyderabad, my hometown in India as my subject for this assignment.

The area outlined in the map above is the City of Hyderabad in the State of Telangana in India. It is a vibrant growing city
with a population of about 6.5 million. Like most places in India, this city is also has one foot in the past and one in the
future. The city has many places with historical buildings dating back to 1600s as well as modern day marvels catering to
the growing population and global needs. For my assignment, I will focus on the area pinned on the map.
Area -1: KPHB Colony: Traditional City Design

For my traditional design illustration we will dive into the Area 1 in the map. Kukatpally Housing Board (KPHB) when
built was the largest colony is Asia. It was built in different sections laid out in 15 Phases, with the higher phase numbers
built at recent times. It is laid out in a traditional design with standard grids with parks at the center. Following is the
overview image of a section of the Colony.

This map shows the 3 such phases of the

colony, all of them in a traditional grid
design. These buildings are about 2-3 floor
tall and restrictions are imposed on how
high they can go in order to keep the area
uniform

To explore the area on Google Maps, use this link.

This is the same area in 2003. You can see rapid

growth and urbanization of the area. You would
need the Google Earth application to see this
historical timeline of the city.
Area 2: Hitech City Road: Modern City Design

For the modern city design illustration we look into Area 2.

The red path highlighted on the right is an elevated highway

and next to it are a series of tall modern buildings. Another
set of tall buildings of about 50 floors could be seen towards
the bottom right. A third area is Fortune fields below this
text box.

You will find similar areas around this place - all with modern
design with proper spacing and rules that mandate spacing
between the next house to allow for sunlight.

Area 3: Structure - System City Design

For the system design illustration we have to navigate a little south in the original map to "Hitech City". It is the home of
Hyderabad's IT corridor with lot of interesting structures. It is designed to allow for business sector to flourish with use
of technology more than other parts of the city. The icon of this area is the "Cyber Towers" shown in the first picture in
the grid below. A few other structures are also presented.

The city designs in the current era seem to intertwine all of the city designs we have learned in our course so far.
Countries as getting more conscious to include greenery in every design, buildings are getting taller and taller to save
space yet at the same time are designed into the traditional grid approach.

There is also a growing pattern to develop Smart Cities that include technology such as solar powered street lights,
illuminated roads, Wi-Fi enabled cities, technology oriented homes, automatic security measures etc. There are also
utopian models being worked on by movements such as the Venus Project that aim to design cities in a way they havent
been before where everyone can design their own house! The future is exciting indeed! (Of course, if we dont bomb
what we build ;))
