3. Executive Summary
This project is providing an implementation of reverse engineering process as a
project for industrial training-I. It includes drawing process of an existing product that has an
electromechanical system. The process of analysis conducted by measuring the product
dimensions and simulate the product by using SolidWorks software, also the report includes
some discussion of manufacturing processes of the product. Most of the parts drawn and
transferred in cad files, then one part selected for print using a professional 3D printer. The
assembly of the product shows the digital view of the physical product. There were some
difficulties in drawing some of the complicated details. Finally, the group came with a
recommendation regarding the manufacturing of the product and they prefer to use a
reinforced plastic because the current plastic material is not able to maintain the griping force
applied in its handle.

4. Introduction
Engineering is designing, manufacturing, assembling and maintaining products and
systems. In fact, there are two types of engineering; one is forward engineering and the other
is reverse engineering. Forward engineering is the traditional process of starting from
abstraction and designing then move to physical implementation of the new design. Reverse
engineering is a processes of extracting knowledge from anther existing man-made product
and re-produce it or re-produce similar product based on the collected information. For
example, when a new car is launched on the market, competing manufacturers may buy one
and disassemble it to learn how it was built and how it works. Reverse engineering provides a
solution to this problem because the physical model is the source of information for the CAD
model. This is also referred to as the physical-to-digital process depicted in figure 1 below
(Vinesh Raja).

Figure 1 Physical to Digital Process.

Throw this project, the reverse engineering will be applied to an electromechanical

device known as electric blower. It is an electromechanical device consisting of many
parts, the main parts are armature, field, fan, switch and nozzle. This device is used in
cleaning surfaces from dust and other purposed. Its main function is generating air flow. The
product is ergonomically designed and it is easy in handle, also its weight is not heavy.

5. Product Description

The electric blower is used for cleaning or coldshouldering machines and instruments of
various industries.

How to use: When use for blowing with nozzle attached to outlet of wind by c. w. tum the
nozzle. When use for suction with nozzle attached to suction port and dust bag attached to
outlet of wind. When dust bag is full, remove the bag and open outlet of bag then clean the
dust to a dust bin. Pressing the switch button, the unit is started. Losing the switch button, the
unit is stopped. The unit can work continuously using lock.

7. Measuring Procedure

Measuring dimensions of major components of the work was done After separating
the major parts of electric blower. We start immediately measure the dimensions of each one,
to do that we have used ruler, Vernier caliper, micrometer, CMM machines, papers and
pencils. We used Vernier caliper to measure the length of the parts: Armature, field, fan
cover. We also used it to measure the diameter of the switch. For diameter and thickness of
armature, field and fan micrometer has been used. We used ruler to measure the length and
diameter of the nozzle. CMM machine has been used to measure the dimensions of motor
housing.

10. Prototyping technique

3D printing is used to prototyping the part, it is good to define the error of the part
before manufacturing. Also the waste reduced and no tooling is required for this process. The
functionality of the printer is to transfer 3D model to a CAD file, then the printer start
warming up the plastic, then it starts detecting the direction and the process of printing is done
layer by layer until the whole prototype of the cad file printed. (Beaudouin-Lafon)

The part that prototyped is Armature, this part include shaft, bearings and coil. This part is
printed because it was measured accurately and it has less features.

11. Conclusion

The industrial training has been conducted by applying reverse engineering technique,
the product was electric blower and it has about 12 major components, taking the
measurement from the parts was the major difficulty because the tools of measurement like
Vernier Caliper and micrometer was not enough to take an exact dimension. the other point is
that is no special tool to measure the radius of the circles and rounds.
