National foreword

This Part of BS 6840 has been prepared under the direction of the Electronic
Equipment Standards Policy Committee and is identical with IEC 268-10:1991
Sound system equipment Part 10: Peak programme level meters, published by
the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This British Standard
implements Harmonization Document HD 483.10 S1, published by the European
Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC). This British
Standard supersedes BS 5428-9:1981 which is withdrawn.
The purpose of this Part of BS 6840 is to standardize the characteristics to be
specified, the relevant methods of measurement and performance requirements
(in some cases) for:
peak programme level meters, in general (section 3);
peak programme level meters, type I (section 4);
peak programme level meters, type II (section 5);
peak programme level meters having incremental displays (section 6);
peak programme level meters having incremental displays, for secondary
and household applications (section 7).
In general, the methods of measurement recommended are those which are
directly related to the definitions. This does not exclude the use of other methods
which can be shown to give equivalent results.
BS 6840 consists of the following Parts:
Part 1: Methods for specifying and measuring general characteristics used
for equipment performance (supersedes part of BS 5428-1);

system amplifiers (supersedes BS 5428-2);
Part 4: Methods for specifying and measuring the characteristics of
microphones (previously BS 5428-3);
Part 5: Methods for specifying and measuring the characteristics of
loudspeakers (supersedes BS 5428-11 and BS 5428-11: Supplement 1);
Part 6: Methods for specifying and measuring the characteristics of auxiliary
passive elements (previously BS 5428-4);
Part 7: Methods for specifying and measuring the characteristics of
headphones and headsets (new)1);
Part 8: Methods for specifying and measuring the characteristics of
automatic gain control devices (previously BS 5428-7);
Part 9: Methods for specifying and measuring the characteristics of artificial
reverberation, time delay and frequency shift equipment (previously
BS 5428-8);
Part 10: Methods for specifying and measuring the characteristics of peak
programme level meters (supersedes BS 5428-9);
Part 11: Specification for application of connectors for the interconnection of
sound system components (supersedes BS 5428-5.2);
Part 12: Specification for applications of connectors for broadcast and
similar use (supersedes BS 5428-5.3);
Part 13: Guide for listening tests on loudspeakers (new);
Part 14: Guide for circular and elliptical loudspeakers; outer frame
diameters and mounting dimensions (previously BS 5428-5.1);
Part 15: Specification for matching values for the interconnection of sound
system components (supersedes BS 5428-10);

Annex A (normative)
Slow mode of operation
The slow mode may be obtained by inserting a network with the following characteristics between the
output of the processing amplifier and the display device.
The total resistance of the meter circuit should be ascertained (including the output resistance Rs of the
processing amplifier, the resistance of display device Rm and any series resistance R1 provided to allow for
the possibility of adding extra display devices in series with the main one) and this value divided in the
proportions 13 : 10 (the former corresponding to the source resistance).
A capacitor of value such that when its value is multiplied by the total load resistance calculated above
gives a product equal to 1, 15 s should be connected between the points in the circuit which divide it in the
ratio previously mentioned.

Figure A.1 Circuit used to obtain the slow-indication mode

The values of C, Rx and Ry are determined by the following equations:

NOTE The above values apply to instruments having the logarithmic stage preceded by the integration circuit. Earlier instruments
arranged differently use other values in order to give the same readings on programme signals.

Revisions

British Standards are updated by amendment or revision. Users of

British Standards should make sure that they possess the latest amendments or
editions.

It is the constant aim of BSI to improve the quality of our products and services.
We would be grateful if anyone finding an inaccuracy or ambiguity while using
this British Standard would inform the Secretary of the technical committee
responsible, the identity of which can be found on the inside front cover.
Tel: 020 8996 9000. Fax: 020 8996 7400.

BSI offers members an individual updating service called PLUS which ensures
that subscribers automatically receive the latest editions of standards.
