Haney Presbyterian Church

Information Package
For Applicants
HPC Youth Ministry Leader Information Package

Dear Applicant

Thank you for your interest in the position of Leader of Children, Youth and Young Adult Ministries at
Haney Presbyterian Church in Maple Ridge.

Our church recognizes the need to encourage the faith development of our children, youth and young
adults in their walk with Jesus Christ. While we have committed and motivated volunteers working with
our young people in an ongoing way, we want to expand the programming for children, youth and
young adults in our church, as well as reaching out to youth in the surrounding community. Expanding in
this way will require a level of time commitment and expertise that our volunteers are unable to
provide.

We are therefore seeking a dynamic, well organized individual with strong leadership skills to develop
programs that will nurture our young people and strengthen their faith. This position will require
working in close collaboration with the Minister, Christian Education Committee, parents and other
program leaders at our church. We expect that the successful candidate will possess a high degree of
self motivation, and an ability to find new ways to grow our youth programming.

Your application will include your resume, and a letter describing your desire to work with our
congregation in this mission to our youth. Please elaborate on your experience in developing similar
programs, or in working with children and youth, in a church setting. We particularly wish to know that
you have a heart for ministry to this segment of our church family. Information about the position and
the congregation is available in this package.

The closing date for applications is August 31, 2010. Please note that we will acknowledge all
applications received, however, we reserve the right to interview selected candidates only.

Please send your application to the following address:

11858 – 216th Street, Maple Ridge, BC, V2X 5H8
Phone: (604) 467 1715 Fax (604) 463 1730

Worship
Worship is our response to God’s mercy. We are drawn into the awesome presence of the Triune God
when we gather for worship. Worship at HPC is for the whole family of God.
WORSHIP SERVICE Sunday mornings at 10 am. We have a blended style of worship that incorporates
traditional elements of worship as well as more contemporary expressions of faith in worship.
EVENING SERVICES are held at 6:30 pm on the last Sunday of every month (September to June). These
services are informal and cover a range of worship styles: Contemporary praise and worship,
Meditative/Reflective readings of Scripture, Taizé services, Healing Services, Discussions etc.
SPECIAL WORSHIP SERVICES are held during Holy Week, and on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday,
Ascension Day, and Christmas Eve.
COMMUNION is celebrated on the first Sunday of every second month (counting from October) as well
as on Maundy Thursday.
MUSIC MINISTRY Music is an essential aspect of our prayers and teaching. Worship music is lead by a
music team that includes the following instruments: piano, organ, guitar, bass, clarinet, and trombone.
Choir practices are Wednesdays at 7:30 pm.

Prayer Ministry
We believe in the power of prayer because we believe in God. Prayer is communication with our Father.
We “devote ourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Col 4:2)

have requested prayer. Contact numbers are given in the weekly bulletin.

Children and Youth Programs

What better can we offer our children than a passionate relationship with the Triune God, marked by an
enduring faith, hope and love?
NURSERY care is provided for babies and toddlers on Sunday mornings. We provide basic care. They
read a “God loves me” Bible story and have time to play.
SUNDAY SCHOOL for children up to grade 6 happens on Sunday mornings at the same time as the
worship service. A few years ago a new format was introduced that works very well in the light of the
small numbers and wide age spread that we have. The kids meet in a large group for singing and the
Bible Lesson after which they divide into age appropriate small groups for activities. The teachers are
divided into groups so that each group is responsible for three months of Sunday School a year. A group

have a teacher for the month as well as three or four helpers. Many of our high school students are
helpers in the Sunday school. Program used: Kid Connection. Superintendant: Matt Simpson.
GIRLS and BOYS GROUPS (for elementary school students) meet every 2nd Friday from 6:00 - 7:30 pm.
The groups are led by our young adults and each group have their own program for Bible Study. The
evening starts with a joint worship time, after which the boys and girls divide into their separate groups
to do their own bible study. Following Bible study, the groups often join for refreshments and fun and
games.
SENIOR BOYS GROUP (grades 9 and up) meets every 2nd Friday from 6:00 - 8:00 pm for a Bible Study
followed by fun activities.
VBS is a week of adventure for children up to grade 6 that usually takes place during the 3rd week of
August. Older youth are encouraged to participate as helpers. We also have a large team of adults who
are divided into teams for décor, food, teaching etc. Our program this year is High Seas Expedition by
Group.
In a recent survey, parents were asked which Christian Education opportunities they would like to see
for their children. The results revealed the following: 83% would like to see the development of youth
cell groups, 58% are interested in mission opportunities, 50% would like to have a youth Bible Study
group, 42% are interested in leadership development for their children, and 33% marked catechism
classes, VBS, children and youth camps, service opportunities, and regular girls, boys and teen groups.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR CHURCH

The Presbyterian Church has been actively involved in the ministry in the Maple Ridge / Pitt Meadows
area for over a hundred years. The first work commenced in Hammond in 1875. In 1888 a brick church
was built in Port Haney and in 1925 there were five Presbyterian congregations in the area. With the
exception of a few families, these congregations became part of the United Church of Canada in 1925.
Presbyterian witness and work continued
however, with a new church building
erected in 1930. In due course three
Presbyterian congregations served Haney,
Hammond and Pitt Meadows. In 1951
these amalgamated to become Haney
Presbyterian Church. Our present building
was dedicated in October 1983. A large
addition to the church including a
hall/gymnasium as well as new office and
reception areas was dedicated in 2001.
The hall has been a tremendously
successful addition to the church.
