CC.1.2.5.B: Cite textual evidence by quoting accurately from the text to explain what
the text says explicitly and make inferences.
I. Prerequisites: Students must be able to read on-level text. Student must be able
to read silently.
II. Essential Questions: What is reading stamina? What connections can you make
to chapter 3 in Easy Money?
IV. Instructional Procedures: To begin the lesson, we will do a check in to see how
the students in my group are doing. I will use the thumb-o-meter to hear how my
students days are going. Next, we will discuss what reading stamina is and why
do we need a reading stamina. I will look for responses that explain reading
stamina helps us read independently and work on our reading skills. I will explain
that today we will be reading for 7 minutes. We will look to finish chapter 3 and
start chapter 4. During the 7 minutes, I will ask the students to tally the times they
get distracted or look up from the book. This will help the students become aware
of when they notice themselves getting distracted and needing a break which is
something that is a bigger part to this weeks over all lesson. Once the 7 minutes
are up, I will have the students fill out their own checklist for how they did during
the stamina reading time. After, we will discuss what the students filled out on
their checklist to create a discussion for times that they might have gotten
distracted or for times that the students may have made a connection. The students
will then fill out their graph in their note books to help track their stamina. Lastly,
we will discuss connections that the students made from the reading working on
citing evidence and writing complete sentences in their response. We will share
our connections based on the time that is left in the class.
VII. Differentiation: M.P. will be allowed to choose her own book as she is a
reading level above the other students.
IX. Self-Assessment: I will use the students graphic organizers to help check how
well the students understand the lesson. I will also use my observations to see if I
started to lose the students attention at some points and recognize times that went
really well.
