Anlise vocal de David Coverdale

David Coverdale, renomado vocalista de hard rock, que j passou por bandas
como Deep Purple e Whitesnake, sempre lembrado, em toda e qualquer lista
incumbida de externar as melhores vozes da histria do rock, como um dos
melhores vocalistas da histria.

Coverdale interessou-se pela msica muito precocemente, e aos 14 anos, j

estava cantando em bandas do underground britnico, com as quais, se
apresentava em bares e pubs da Redcar and Cleveland (ENG).

Em entrevista concedida "Sounds" em 1974, Coverdale declarou:

"Minha voz ainda est em formao, recentemente eu aprendi a cantar com o

estmago, e pode parecer bobagem, mas cantar com o estmago me proporciona
um efeito muito melhor do que quando canto de forma normal".

Nota do autor: Cantar com o estmago proporciona profundidade e, basicamente,

o mesmo que cantar com o diafragma (isto que o Coverdale quis dizer), ou seja,
necessrio que o cantor tenha conhecimentos elementares de respirao, apoio
e sustentao.

Passos sobre como aprender a cantar com o "estmago":

1. Fortalecer o diafragma parece difcil, mas bastante simples. Um bom exerccio
respirar to profundamente quanto possvel e empurrar seu estmago para fora,
na medida do possvel, ao faz-lo. Ah! Assim, voc est respirando com seu
diafragma. Certificar-se de que seus ombros no se movem!

2. Uma vez que voc aprendeu a respirar corretamente, voc precisar obter tanto
poder em seu diafragma quanto possvel. Faa uma respirao profunda com seu
seu diafragma e ao expirar, conte o mais alto possvel, claro, sem berrar, ou
tensionar a garganta. Faa uma contagem lenta e uniforme, para que voc possa ir
avaliando os seus limites e at voc pode ir.

3. Voc dominou a primeira etapa do canto de seu estmago? Agora, voc precisa
aprender a abrir e mover sua boca corretamente ao cantar para que a emisso dos
sons e das notas saiam mais claras possveis. Olha-se no espelho, e verifique se
ests abrindo a boca corretamente.

4. Sempre certifique-se de que voc est respirando com seu diafragma, se

comear a doer ou ocorrer tenses em suas garganta, que ests fazendo
equivocadamente.

No h informaes ou relatos sobre o fato de Coverdale ter tido ou no aulas de

canto, formalmente, com um professor, mas o fato que ele, realmente,
desenvolveu sua forma peculiar e particular de cantar, obedecendo o seus limites
e seguindo tcnicas elementares para um bom desempenho vocal.

A primeira banda, relevante, de Coverdale fora a Vintage 67, onde ele cantou de
1966 1968.

Em 1973, Coverdale viu um artigo na Melody Maker, onde dizia que o Deep Purple
estava procurando um vocalista para substituir o, igualmente genial, Ian Gillan.

Um pouco antes disto, em 1969, Coverdale cantou na The Government, banda

esta que abriu alguns shows do Deep Purple em algumas oportunidades, desde
ento, Coverdale j adquirira familiaridade com o Purple, e a banda lembrava,
brevemente, do vocalista.

Em 1973, Coverdale enviou uma fita K7 banda, com algumas gravaes de sua
voz, e, evidentemente, a banda gostou do que ouviu e o admitiu. Coverdale
tonava-se a o novo vocalista da banda, e o resto da histria, todo mundo conhece.

Coverdale ministrou performances estarrecedoras nos shows da banda, fato que

fez com que alguns fs no sentissem a mnima falta do "silver voice" Ian Gillan.

A prtica contnua, bem como os conhecimentos prvios e elementares que

Coverdale tinha acerca de tcnicas vocais, corroboraram para que ele evolusse, e
ele passasse a cantar cada vez melhor, principalmente, tanto ao vivo, quanto em
estdio.

Entre as tcnicas utilizadas por Coverdale esto:

- Belting Pleno: Voz mista com predominncia de musculatura tireoaritenidea e

selamento gltico pleno, resultando, acusticamente, em notas agudas e
encorpadas.

- Half Belting: Voz mista com predominncia de msculos cricotireideos,

resultando, acusticamente, em notas agudas e encorpadas, comparadas tpica
voz d cabea.

- Drive Creaky Voice: Efeitos de voz estridente e rasgada, porm, de forma clara,
sem apresentar rouquido ou caractersticas prprias de quem tensiona
exageradamente a garganta.

- Yodel de finalizao: Transio d aduo dupla para aduo simples de CT.

A partir dos anos 90, Coverdale apresentou uma grave infeco crnica em sua
garganta, e ele relembrou o caso h alguns anos atrs:

"Ele (o mdico) ps uma lanterna pequena na minha boca e disse 'Essa a pior
infeco que eu j vi, estou surpreso por voc estar conseguindo at mesmo falar'.
Eu me preparei para uma cirurgia de emergncia e o mdico me disse que eu
tinha 50% d chances do nunca mais voltar a cantar."

Nesta poca, Coverdale acumulava uma dvida de 3 milhes de dlares, sua vida
estava uma baguna e a cirurgia foi a sua ltima cartada para voltar a cantar e
afastar a depresso que o assolava.

"Eu realmente, exagerei um pouco nos anos 80, a agenda de shows era enorme,
no havia descanso e minha voz estava sempre no limite, alm do mais, msicas
como 'Still Of The Night', 'Here I Go Again', 'Is This Love' e 'Now You're Gone' so
muito difceis de cantar e interpretar".

Estimasse que em 2004, Coverdale tenha realizado o procedimento mdico

"Voicelift", responsvel por rejuvenescer, parcialmente, as suas cordas vocais. Os
resultados foram positivos, basta aferir a bela performance vocal de Coverdale no
DVD "Live In the Still of the Night", lanado em 2006.

Em 2006, na sada de um show, um f perguntou a Coverdale como ele achava

que sua voz tinha se desenvolvido ao longos dos anos, e Coverdale foi enftico:

"Eu no gosto de comparaes, eu no comparo o Whitesnake de hoje com o

Whitesnake de 20 anos atrs, eu no comparou minha voz hoje coma minha voz
de 20 anos atrs, eu simplesmente, no gosto de comparaes, elas so inteis.
Mas voc sabe, n? Eu adoro cantar de forma suave, mas tambm amo cantar de
forma agressiva, e me sinto confortvel cantando meio tom abaixo em algumas
canes. Tudo depende do que eu sinto, no que tange atestar o que cada
cano, em particular, precisa. Nunca fui o melhor cantor do mundo, e como
poderia ser? No d pra competir com cantores como Otis Redding e Luciano
Pavarotti. Mas sempre fiz o meu melhor, sempre, em todas as ocasies, eu dou o
meu melhor."

E Coverdale continuou vociferando:

"Eu vou lhe dar um exemplo, na msica 'If you want Me', eu fui at o limite da
minha voz para distorc-la mais o que o habitual. E porque eu fiz isso? Porque
senti que era assim que a msica precisava ser cantada, a msica deveria ter uma
atmosfera descompromissada, isso era o que sentia quando gravei, alguns no
gostaram, mas no me importo, o problema meu".

importante salientar que, fisiologicamente, a voz do ser humano muda ao longos

dos anos, tanto ao falar, quanto ao cantar, e naturalmente compreensvel que,
hoje, Coverdale possuo uma nova e diferente forma de cantar, mais concentrada
na execuo de notas na regio dos mdios e graves. Isto no significa que
Coverdale esteja cantando mal, apenas diferente.

O legado de David Coverdale irrepreensvel, alm de ser um grande cantor, um

excelente frontman e influenciou inmeras geraes de vocalistas de hard rock e
heavy metal.

Um f iluste de Coverdale era nada mais, na menos que Ronnie James Dio. A "voz
do heavy metal" admitiu que Coverdale era um dos seus vocalistas favoritas, e a
recproca era verdadeira, pois Coverdale sempre admitiu que Dio era sua maior
influncia.

Outro cantor, f de Coverdale, o limitado, mas competente, vocalista Vince Neil,

do Motley Crue. Em entrevista revista Time em 2010, Neil admitiu:

" uma pena que minha voz soe to aguda e fina, o que eu queria mesmo era
cantar como Coverdale ou o Dio, mas infelizmente, eu no tenho uma voz que se
assemelha a deles dois".

A voz de Coverdale est enraizada no blues e no soul, o que lhe proporciona timo
domnio na regio de mdios e graves, j os seus agudos, so, segundo ele
prprio, influenciados por Robert Plant, uma das maiores inspiraes de
Coverdale.
