Our world needs some fun! We need a time for people to get together from all around

the world to have a good time and show our talents. This happens every two years during the

Olympic games. The Games gives each country an opportunity to display national pride and all

the hard work of their countrys athletes. Although the Olympics provide an opportunity for

nations to shine, there is a darker side because the Games are also unfair and dangerous.

The Olympic Games have been unfair because they served as a battleground for a small

percentage of the worlds countries to prove who is best. Countries in Europe and North

America have dominated the Olympics throughout its history. This unfair advantage is

reinforced by the fact that the Olympics have never been held in the the southern hemisphere

until this past Olympics in Brazil. Some people say the Olympics have been held predominantly

in the northern hemisphere because it is more wealthy than the southern; this may be true, but

does not make it right. Some countries cannot even participate or were banned from the

Olympics because of the activities of their countrys governments (Olympics). During the

Apartheid in South Africa, many athletes who could have competed were not allowed to because

of the color of their skin. Furthermore because much of the world did not agree with South

Africas Apartheid policy, the country was banned from participating in the Olympics from 1964

to 1992 (Olympics). Another example of the unfairness is the difference in rules for different
Dreier 5

countrys athletes. American standards for the Olympics are harder than some of the other

countries because if you dont make the cut or make one mistake, you are out of the games. An

american womens basketball player became a Russian citizen just so she could play in the

Olympics after failing to make the cut for the American team (Olympics). As you can see from

these examples, the Olympics really arent fair and these practices should be carefully considered

and changed to allow a more even playing field for athletes of different countries.

In addition to being unfair, Olympic Games can also be quite dangerous. Bringing

thousands upon millions of people together onto a world stage may be asking for trouble. With

that many people in one place, and the whole world watching, that is a draw for terrorists.

Eleven members of the Israeli Olympic team were killed by Palestinian terrorists during the 1992

Olympic games (The Olympic). During the summer Game, which were being held in Munich,

West Germany, eight members of a subgroup of the Fatah organization, a Palestinian group

using terrorist methods to resist the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, entered the

Olympic Village compound and sought out the apartments of the Israeli Olympic team,

(Terrorists). Terrorists these days are even more of a threat, and we dont need or want to be

worried when we get to the Games. Some people think that they should ban the countries who

might bring problems or terrorists from participating in the Games, which are supposed to be a

good spirited event. The world should try to do something about potential terrorists to make the

Games a safe place to be so that everyone can just enjoy the competition.

Some may feel that despite the unfairness and danger, we should continue the Games

because they are a chance for people to shine and show their nation's pride. The Olympics

demonstrates amazing human achievements and spectators cheer for people from other countries
Dreier 6

because they want to share in the feeling of celebration (The Olympic). An example of this

coming together of nations is all the people around the world who watched and hoped that Usain

Bolt would be the fastest person in the world again. Although the Olympics may need to change

to become more fair and fae, some people feel that we can definitely all come together with other

nations to still have some fun while watching the worlds best athletes compete against each

other.

Even though this can be amazing to watch, it does create a risk for terrorists to plot an

attack, and the competition have clearly been dominated by North America and Europe.

Although the Olympic Games give each nation an opportunity to display their talents for the

whole world to see, should we reconsider continuing this tradition since it is potentially

dangerous and highly unfair?
