Maayanot names Makerspace for Nobel laureate Rosalyn Yalow

eople often think that science
is about theories and equations
and big ideas. The earth goes
around the sun, gravity attracts
with a force inversely proportional to
the square of the distance, e equals mc
squared. Its chalk-on-blackboard stuff.
But most working scientists spend less
time with theories on the blackboard, and
more time trying to measure things that
arent easy to measure. How do you build
a machine that can detect subatomic parti-
cles? How do you find gravity waves? How
do you measure how much insulin is in a
sample of blood?
Rosalyn Sussman Yalow won a Nobel
Prize for answering the last question in
the words of the Nobel Prize Committee,
for the development of radioimmunoas-
says of peptide hormones. The answer
she came up with sounds as much like
witchcraft as science: Inject guinea pigs
with cow insulin. Add radioactive iodine
to an extract from their blood. Throw in a
few more steps, measure the radiation of
the final product with a gamma ray detec-
tor, perform some calculations, and voila:

perform surgery at Englewood Hospi-

Okay, so the students may have lifted lol-
lipops and gumballs, and unwrapped Star-
burst cubes, instead of cutting tissue and
removing organs. And they may have been
gathered in the hospitals lobby, not inside
a high-tech, sterile operating room.
Nevertheless, these youngsters got a
real feel for one of todays most cutting-
edge and increasingly popular surgical
procedures robotic surgery.
After an introduction and some instruc-
tion, the students got the chance to sit at
the operating console of the da Vinci surgi-

as it performed various delicate maneu-

in the operating room.
We figured it was really good for the
kids to show them what were doing, said
Dr. Anna Serur, the hospitals chief of colon

event. We also wanted to have them keep
in mind that there are very exciting things
to do in medicine, she added. Some-

from behind the desk.

deposit from one anniversary date to the next anniversary date. Simple interest rate bonus is subject to change at any time after first anniversary date of account opening. Hypothetical example of how bonus
works: Assume an account is opened on January 12, 2017 for $50,000. A $10,000 withdrawal is made on July 12, 2017. No other withdrawals are made prior to the January 12, 2018 anniversary date. The low bal-
