Section 1

Standard 1: Knowledge of Students


The lesson appeared to be designed to meet the needs of the learners and took into account their readiness for the new content.
The classroom was well managed and the students were respectful of the teacher and each other.

Section 2

Standard 2 Knowledge of Content


The teacher used content-specific strategies to help students understand the new material, including whole-group discussion,
modeling and practice. District and state content standards were being addressed in the lesson.
Standard 3: Assessment
Informal assessment was evident as the teacher questioned the students and involved them in discussion and problem solving.
Students were active in sharing their problem solving with each other, including going to the SmartBoard and working out
problems/solutions. Students also engaged in a wall activity with several practice problems that could be completed with peer
support.
Standard 4: Instruction
A warm-up problem was used to focus the students on learning. Learning goals were posted and discussed. A student also read
the goal for the class. The lesson pace was appropriate for the audience. Content was chunked and provided through direct notes,
problem solving, modeling, whole class discussion and individual practice.
Standard 5: Learning Environment
The classroom had a positive environment in which students were treated with respect. The teacher was encouraging towards the
students as they answered questions. A combination of whole group, individual and small group learning was provided.
Standard 6: Collaboration and Communication
The teacher used content-driven and student-appropriate language during the lesson. The teacher clearly communicated the goals
and effectively answered questions in a positive classroom environment.

Closure/Evaluation
NA for this lesson. Observation concluded before the class period ended. Internal closure was provided before transition to wall
activity. Wall activity provided chance for additional practice.

General Comments

Refinement
No areas of refinement are noted for this lesson.
Reinforcement
Warm-up problem was used. Goals were posted and discussed. Students were engaged, including going to the SmartBoard and
using the resources. Discussion was productive and the combination of questioning and practice problems kept the students
engaged. The wall activity appeared to keep students engaged as well.
