LESSON ORGANISATION
Year Level: 8 Time: 9-950 Date: Students Prior Knowledge:

corresponding function each organelle
Learning Area: performs within the cell.
biology - The phases of Mitosis and the
characteristics of the resulting cells.
Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum - The basic structure of a chromosome

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action
verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

State the definition of Meiosis.

List and briefly describe the phases of Meiosis.
List the key characteristics of the cells formed by Meiosis
Have a brief understanding of the role cell division via Meiosis plays within the body (i.e transfer
of DNA)
Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:
- Ensure class set of Ipads is available with - Academically and technologically

lesson.

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

!1
Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:
Could the students explain meiosis in enough detail? (did they understand meiosis? Or just
regurgitated information the researched?
Did I give enough time for them to finish the explain everything project with enough detail?
(could they use the app competently? Or was it too difficult?)
Was the lesson enjoyable and engaging?
Could the students effectively work in pairs?

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

Did I give every student a chance for input and to do their best? (eg. Not picking the same
students to answer questions)
Did I help the students that needed it and extend the ones who found it easy? (eg. More/
different examples of the same topic, having more work to do once finished)
Was I clear in my instructions and clarified properly if there were any problems (eg. Were there
many students asking what to do/ how to do it)
Did I cater for all the students different learning styles in someway? (eg. Use of audio, visual,
written, social, ICT examples)
Did it seem like children enjoyed the topic/ lesson? (was there positive energy in the
classroom? Were students engaged and happy?)

depth and visual understanding of Meiosis.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Web links:
Questions):
In their pairs, students are instructed to use the links provided to
create a detailed Explain Everything video about Meiosis. The https://
students are given a scenario that they have a cousin in www.thoughtco.com/
9:10-
9:50 England who is struggling to understand the concept, and they stages-of-meiosis-373512

them understand the concept. Students are informed that they 3829376/8-stages-of-
will be presenting their finished video to the class. meiosis-flash-cards/
Using their prior knowledge and web links provided, students
must gather information regarding the phases of Meiosis and http://
their key characteristics. Students are instructed to create an www.biology.arizona.edu/

gathered.
Students are encouraged to work collaboratively and to have https://

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

9:50- Lq6VUCA28T-
Students had prior knowledge of the phases of Meiosis, therefor
9:53
time in this lesson was only allocated to build a more in-depth aOWlFt_a1Tg&index=2
understanding about the key characteristics of each phase. The
lesson objectives will be the same for the next lesson, as the
next lesson will comprise of only presentations and no knew
learning. A review of the lesson objectives will be undergone in
the next lesson when the teacher has evaluated each partner/s
video and assessed their understanding of Meiosis. The
students have been allocated adequate time to complete their
video and should therefor be ready to present in front of the
class in the next lesson. Students will be allocated an order in
which they will present.

9:53-
9:55 Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
If students have not completed the task, extra time will be
allocated during the before-school period from 8am-9am for
them to complete it.

!3
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these
be judged?)
The teacher will review each of the videos and mark each
student and their partner accordingly as to how well their
understanding has been displayed in the video. Students will
retain information at a greater rate by explaining what they know
(as opposed to writing it down) which is one of the great benefits
of this ICT tool. If the teacher feels as though there is an
inadequacy in the class, more revision and activities on this
particular topic will be undergone in subsequent lessons.
