Media Text Analysis

The article used for this media text analysis was an online article from the 2016 archive

of the BBC news magazine which is a section of BBC News Online that has numerous

articles that are linked to any topic or event.

For linguistic devices, lexical ambiguity has been used in the headline, Mind your

slanguage means be careful your language? Or be careful and you should speak the

correct slang? Also, another example can be found at the first row of the article, the

word Cockney, obviously, it is referring to the accent or dialect of working-class

Londoners traditionally, but also according to Australian dictionary it could be

interrupted as a young snapper fish. The last sentence of the second paragraph, it

said Now there are very few constraints - in media, TV soaps, rap lyrics - it's much

more in your face.", in your face is a metaphor to describe the slang is all over media

and daily lives, the suffocating feeling, very directly and forcefully, aggressively

appear in front of you in different form from different media. Also in the last paragraph

"You can very quickly slip into the perception that there is good language and bad

language", the word slip is also a metaphor to describe the understand that how fast

it changes and become a part of the perception of good language and bad language.

Throughout the news article there are no graphical elements, article is short and easy

to read. From the headline of the article is Mind your slanguage, we can see that it

is a soft news and due to its contents is insignificance to its region, also less perceived

urgency compare to hard news. The register is more informal and the spelling of words

are less strict than broadsheet. From the style of the article I can conclude that the

intended target audience are students and people who is educated in the United

Kingdom but not for upper class people nor lower class people due to its lacking

characteristics of a tabloid. This article also written intended for people who care about

the changes of culture within the society, it could be anyone rang from teachers,

parents, or students with the United Kingdom.
