LEARNING COMPETENCY 1.1:

Distinguish a holistic perspective from a partial point of view

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the period, 85% of the students will be able to achieve 75%
proficiency level in terms of:

1. defining man and explaining his/her personal understanding of human


nature;
2. explaining the relationship between body and soul; and
3. valuing the importance of nourishing both body and soul.

B. REVIEW
Appeal to the previous knowledge of the learners based on their religion,
former subjects as Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (EsP).
1. Is man composed of a physical body?
2. Is man only composed of a physical matter?
C. LESSON PROPER
1. MOTIVATION
Show a model man made of paper supported by a transparent plastic.
If the plastic support is taken away the paper man falls.
a. How can you be sure that man is really made of body and soul?
b. What are the characteristics of being physical-body/matter?
c. What are the characteristics of the soul?

2. PRESENTATION
Man- is spiritual being (soul) and physical/material being (body)
Scholastics- Augustine & Aquinas
Man- dipartite of body and soul Pythagoreans (582-507 B.C.)
-akin to Socrates 470-399 BC; Plato 422-347 BC;

3. DISCUSSION/ ABSTRACTION
Socrates (470-399 BC) Human soul should be nurtured properly through
its acquisition of knowledge, wisdom and virtue.

Plato (422-347 BC) Man - Body (Appetite) & Spirit (Reason)


Control both spirit and appetite to have a well-
balanced personality.
Aristotle (335-263 BC) Man is a rational animal.
-Body and soul are in the state of unity; they are
inseparable and constitute man as a whole.

-Man should develop the spirit/soul by improving his critical thinking that
which embraces questioning, analyzing, criticizing, synthesizing,
evaluating, and judging phenomenon or reality. He/She must think.

D. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES
Show the paper man.
1. Is man really composed of body and soul?
2. Do we have to nourish the body alone?
3. Should man nurture his spirit?
E. SYNTHESIS/ GENERALIZATION

Man is a rational being.


Man is composed of body and soul.
Man should develop the spirit/soul by improving his critical thinking.

IV. EVALUATION (Can be written or done in recitation)


Do you believe that man has soul? Why?
