Assignment 1.1: Assessing and Enhancing Your Schools

Identity
Part One

1.) Schools Mission: Proficient

2.) Schools Vision: Proficient

3.) Schools Core Values and/or Belief Statements: Proficient

This year South Edgecombe has a new principal and assistant

principal. There are several new teachers to the school as well. The
schools vision, mission, and core values have been in place for a few
years and are aligned to our district. They are posted on the school
website and the majority of staff can reference them. There have been
discussions about mission and vision, but administration does not want
to come in and change many things in this first year. We are the
Dragons and our discussions with staff have looked at our work with
students, as well as what a Dragon Scholar looks like. Our work has
also focused on a motto and theme.Dragons on F.I.R.E. Fires. Ignite.
Real. Excellency. Staff and students have embraced this and it is
apparent throughout the school in our celebrations and
acknowledgements. Our PBIS committee has been strategically
working to ensure our PBIS matrix and consequence chart are aligned
with our mission, vision, and core values and beliefs as well.

Next Steps
1. Continue to work with staff on what a Dragon Scholar looks like
2. Develop a character education/global leadership plan aligned to
the above
3. Begin work of reviewing mission and vision (next year)

Assignment 1.3: Personal Reflection on Strategic Leadership

I believe NCPAPAs model identifies Strategic Leadership as the

driver because it is the foundation. A strategic leader is one who
encompasses many skill sets. He/she must be a visionary,
collaborator, influencer, systems thinker, facilitator, etc. A strategic
leader knows how to involve all stakeholders in the decision making
process and ensures gracious space for everyone. Strategic leaders
make sure students and student achievement are at the center and the
focus of decisions made. Strategic leaders also allow for the
empowerment of others and know the importance of it.

I feel like I am in the beginning stages of Strategic Leadership. I think

the ways I can advance my knowledge and skills in this is to continue
to review our current mission and vision. I also need to be mindful of
the changes the school has incurred and the fact that we still have old
staff, as well as many brand new staff. I need to make sure that
everything we do is aligned to our vision and mission. Input from all
stakeholders is key and I need to make sure we are getting and
listening to this input. Last but not least, I need to work on ensuring
our school is a gracious space for everyone. I want to empower staff to
take on leadership opportunities.
