IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL STUDENTS ENROLLED WITH NWU

According to regulations stipulated by the Department of Education, no

qualification may be completed in a shorter period of time than the minimum
period determined for that specific qualification. The NWU has included this in
the rules to be applied for all qualifications. Consequently the Faculty of
Education Science, including the SCTE, may not award any certificate, diploma
or degree unless this stipulated time has elapsed. We therefore advise students
not to attempt to complete studies within a shorter period than the time specified
for that particular qualification. The NWU can not bestow your qualification
before the entire minimum period has elapsed.

Please Note that students may contact lecturers with any queries or uncertainties
regarding academic matters. Lecturers can provide academic support to students
via e-mail, telephonically or through personal appointment AS WELL AS the
Facebook page for Technology Education students. (go to Like Pages: Search
for, people, places and things: NWU Technology for Education Distance

as a social network page where students can ask questions. By liking this page
you are part of a Community of Inquiry and it is expected of you as community
member to help each other in terms of academic content of modules. If you post

a question on this page, please make sure that you stipulate the module code
clearly. Please remember that it is imperative to make an appointment if you
need to meet with a lecturer in person, as lecturers are often out of office due to
meetings or teaching responsibilities. Valuable time could be lost where students
travel to see a lecturer who is not available at that specific time.

WELCOME TO THIS MODULE

We welcome you as student in the second module of Technology for PGCE

students, namely TGNO 521.
In this module, we will build on the knowledge that you have already acquired. In
TGNO 511 we emphasised the Technological Process. In TGNO 521 you are
going to use the Technological Process to solve an actual practical problem in
our modern-day society.

TGNO 521 TUTORIAL NOTES 2015 2

RATIONALE

Technology education aims to develop the following:

the ability to solve technology problems through investigation, development,
evaluation and communication;
a fundamental understanding of and the ability to apply technological
knowledge, skills and values both as an individual and as a member of a
team in a variety of contexts;
a critical understanding of the integrated relationship between technology,
society, economy and the environment (Department of Education, 1997:
TECH-3).
In addition to the above, the module also has as object to:
help to make teachers technologically literate; and
to create appreciation for the role of Technology Education in order to
cultivate in our countrys youth an attitude of being innovative and of solving
problems.

MODULE PLAN

The course is divided into 8 study units and each unit represents approximately
one week of study.

In Study Unit 1, a situation is described to you. You are required to identify the
problems and needs in the situation.
In Study Units 2 to 7 you are equipped with knowledge and skills regarding
structures, mechanical, electronic, biological, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
and processing that you may need to enable you to present a meaningful and
technologically fairly advanced solution.

Refer to one of the above knowledge areas in Technology Education and identify
a problem. You must solve this problem by designing and making a
prototype.
You are required to present the process and product in the form of a project

CONTACT SESSIONS

Attendance of contact sessions is of vital importance to ensure success with your

studies. It provides the opportunity for students to discuss any problems they
might encounter with the assignment or the content of the module. It furthermore
serves as a platform to engage in discussions with the facilitator and other
students regarding the assignment, examination and other relevant issues in
relation to the module. Students must come prepared to contact sessions to
ensure effective support from the facilitator.

Thank you and good luck for your studies.

Do not hesitate to contact the facilitator or your lecturer if you need any
assistance with this module.
