-After reading Animal Farm, write an essay in which you explore how the novel reflects the ideas

of
utopia and the changing ideas of the ideal. Choose one of the following questions to help support your
argument:
-What is the author saying about societies that strive for a given “ideal”?
-Why are the main characters animals?
-What leads to the downfall of the ideal?
-How do the setting and characters’ backgrounds affect the story?

First, plan your essay with this outline:

Thesis/claim: The animals were uncoordinated which created the downfall of their utopia

Reason 1 - The animals aren't as smart as the leaders
Evidence from book
-When boxer gets hurt squealer tells them that he's going to the hospital but he's actually going to the glue
factory
-apples and milk thing
Three days later it was announced that he had died in the hospital at Willingdon, in spite of receiving
every attention a horse could have. Squealer came to announce the news to the others. He had, he said,
been present during Boxer's last hours.
"It was the most affecting sight I have ever seen!" said Squealer, lifting his trotter and wiping away a tear.
"I was at his bedside at the very last. And at the end, almost too weak to speak, he whispered in my ear
that his sole sorrow was to have passed on before the windmill was finished. 'Forward, comrades!' he
whispered. 'Forward in the name of the Rebellion.

It is for YOUR sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples. Do you know what would happen if we
pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back! Yes, Jones would come back!

Reason 2 - Pigs take advantage of their powers
Evidence from book
Pigs take advantage and say that only pigs get to eat apples and milk and that pigs only get to sleep on
beds

"Comrades!" he cried. "You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness
and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. Our sole object in
taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples (this has been proved by Science, comrades)
contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers

A pile of straw in a stall is a bed, properly regarded. The rule was against sheets, which are a human
invention. We have removed the sheets from the farmhouse beds, and sleep between blankets. And very
comfortable beds they are too!

Reason 3 - make mistakes
Evidence from the book
Letting boxer die
"It was the most affecting sight I have ever seen!" said Squealer, lifting his trotter and wiping away a tear.
"I was at his bedside at the very last. And at the end, almost too weak to speak, he whispered in my ear
that his sole sorrow was to have passed on before the windmill was finished. 'Forward, comrades!' he
whispered. 'Forward in the name of the Rebellion.
Not rebuilding the windmill

Now, build your draft.
Add a FULL INTRODUCTION before the thesis. This should include an attention grabber, the author,
background, brief plot summary. With each body paragraph, state reason first, followed by evidence.
Then, justify and explain your evidence. How does this connect to your thesis/claim?Conclusion should
address why this matters and provide a new thought for the reader to consider.

George Orwell, the author of this book created a piece that was very interesting. He created a
world where animals were trying to make the perfect utopia by kicking out their farmer. All this did not
end up working and soon came to a downfall. The animals weren't as smart as the leader, the leader took
advantage of their power, and they made many mistakes are all ways the farm animals were
uncoordinated which created the downfall of their utopia.

Due to the fact that the animals were very uncoordinated, this caused a downfall to their so called
Utopia. The other animals were not as smart as the leader which could be a big reason for their downfall.
For example when boxer was very sick he was supposed to go to the hospital but he didn't. “Three days
later it was announced that he had died in the hospital at Willingdon, in spite of receiving every attention
a horse could have. Squealer came to announce the news to the others. He had, he said, been present
during Boxer's last hours. "It was the most affecting sight I have ever seen!" said Squealer, lifting his
trotter and wiping away a tear.” Squealer obviously knew where Boxer was going but he told the rest of
the animals that it was all fine that he was indeed going to a hospital. This shows a way of how the leaders
are way smarter than the rest of the animals because why would Boxer be going to the hospital in a glue
factory truck? Another reason why the leaders are way smarter than all the other animals is because they
actually believed Napoleon when he said that pigs needed to eat the milk and apples. “It is for YOUR
sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples. Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in
our duty? Jones would come back! Yes, Jones would come back!” The pigs made it sound like if they
didn't get the milk and apples they would die and if they died who was going to lead, but if you think
about it before Jones left they never really got milk and apples and they were fine. Since the pigs as
leaders were way smarter than the other animals it was easy for them to do things therefore they were one
of the reasons for the downfall of their farm.

Another reason for the downfall of their farm was because the pigs took advantage of their power.
When Jones left the farm he had left the beds, in the beginning the pigs themselves said we will not sleep
on beds because those are for humans and by humans but because they took advantage of their power that
was soon not true. “A pile of straw in a stall is a bed, properly regarded. The rule was against sheets,
which are a human invention. We have removed the sheets from the farmhouse beds, and sleep between
blankets. And very comfortable beds they are too!” The took advantage and helped themselves breaking
their own rules. Also going back to the apples and milk they just took advantage of their power,
“"Comrades!" he cried.
We pigs are brainworkers” The pigs
said we need these apples and milk to stay healthy and they said no we are not being selfish but they were
because they were the only ones getting apples and milk. This is an example of what not to do as a leader
because if the pigs were to stay humble and not want everything taking advantage of their power Animal
Farm would have probably succeeded.

Animal Farms utopia soon went to a downfall because they seemed to make many mistakes.
When snowball wanted to build the windmill her idea was denied. “Napoleon produced no schemes of his
own, but said quietly that Snowball's would come to nothing, and seemed to be biding his time. But of all
their controversies, none was so bitter as the one that took place over the windmill.” This lead to snowball
leaving the farm. They made a mistake with not building the windmill because if they were to have built it
then their work would be reduced and Boxer wouldn't have to work as much and as hard as he did.
Another mistake they made is connected to not building the windmill, it has to do with boxer, Boxer was
very hard working meaning he would get tired. If they had built the windmill then Boxer wouldn't have to
do much and maybe he wouldn't have gotten hurt. “Boxer's split hoof was a long time in healing. They
had started the rebuilding of the windmill the day after the victory celebrations were ended. Boxer refused
to take even a day off work, and made it a point of honour not to let it be seen that he was in pain.” When
he did get hurt instead of being taken to the hospital to see if they could help him Squealer called the glue
factory to take him which was one of their biggest mistakes leading to the downfall of Animal Farm, But
this could have also been boxers fault for not resting.

The reason for the downfall of Animal farm was because the animals weren't as smart as the
leader, the leader took advantage of their power, and they made many mistakes caused their utopia to
come to an end. From this you can infer that if all animals were treated equally and listened to each other
their Farm would have made it without humans.
