Catholic Stewardship Appeal
With a grateful heart I would like to extend my
appreciation to all the families that pledged and
committed to the 2016 Catholic Stewardship Appeal.
Our final summary has been received from the diocese. I
am pleased to provide the following year-end
information:
St. Peter Pledge Goal for 2016: $67,415.00
St. Peter Pledges for 2016: $81,821.00
St. Peter Cash Received: $79,252.50
St. Peter Participation: 300 of 1633 registered families
(18.4% participation rate)
St. Peter 2016 Rebate: $11,979.00
As a parish, St. Peter the Apostle exceeded the diocesan
pledge goal by 121%. The cash received at the end of the
annual campaign was 97% of the amount pledged and
118% of the diocesan pledge goal. The diocese remitted
$ 11,979.00 directly to St. Peter the Apostle. This
amount represents the excess over the diocesan pledge
goal. Thank you to all the families that participated. As
we move forward to the 2017 CSA Appeal, all registered
family envelopes are available in the sanctuary vestibule.

Retrouvaille is a Catholic based program designed to help couples
rediscover their love for each other. If you or someone you know is

Retrouvaille. This program helps couples with communication issues,
addiction challenges, infidelity or parenting problems. The couples

Audio/Video Ministry is looking for kind hearted people to run the
slideshows for Mass. If you like to help out at St. Peters and haven't
found a ministry you would enjoy, this group will surely love your
support. All you have to do is contact Anthony J. Sperduti - A/V
Ministry Coordinator at his email anthonysperduti@gmail.com or call
him at 702.354.5960 and we can instruct you on the simple to follow
procedures of running the slideshow projectors for your fellow
parishioners. You will find this ministry easy and fun and if you
ever feel like falling asleep during Mass this will surely keep
you awake as you follow along with the Mass. We are looking
for new people to start as soon as possible.

CANONICAL- LITURGICAL FORUM

MARRIAGE BY PROXY
Dear Father Gem: A friend of mine is an identical twin,
and she recently got married, and her twin sister was the
maid of honor. At a party before the wedding, the two of
them were kidding the groom that they might switch places
and he wouldnt know which one he was getting. Of course
this was a joke, but now Im wondering, if they really had
switched places, would the poor man really have been
married to the wrong girl by accident? In some States in the
USA, marriage by proxy is allowed. Does the Catholic also
allow it? Can we apply Marriage by Proxy in this regard?

Dear Catherine: As weve said in this space before, there is no
question that the Churchs law concerning marriage and
annulment is the most widely misunderstood concept in the
entire Code of Canon Law. Marriage annulment (Declaration of
Nullity) is utterly unlike a civil divorcefor an annulment is a
statement that the sacrament of marriage was actually invalid at
the moment that the spouses exchanged their consent.
It is possible that all the external, visible trappings that
are necessary for the celebration of a sacrament may seem to
be present in a wedding ceremony, and yet something is
missingsomething so important to that particular sacrament
that its absence meant that the sacrament was not really
conferred. In such a case, we say that the sacrament was
conferred invalidly, meaning that in reality, it had no effect.
The scenario that you presented, however, is quite tricky.
Please note that marriage is unique in that it is the only
sacrament which is administered not by the priest or deacon
who officiates, but by the very persons receiving the sacrament,
who must give their consent. Canon 1055.1 provides a
theological definition of Christian marriage: it is a covenant by
which a man and a woman establish a partnership of their whole
life. Thus both the bride and the groom have to get it right in
order to have a valid marriage ceremony.
If a man and a woman intend to make a covenant to
establish a partnership of their whole life, it follows naturally that
they each have to know whom theyre making this covenant
with! But how well do they really have to know each other?
Probably most of us have found at some point in our lives
that we thought we knew another person quite well, but then
discovered some characteristic about him/her that was a
surprise to us. If it was a negative quality, it may have been quite
a turn-off! And if we had been close friends with the other person
for a long time, the new revelation may have been a complete
shock to us.
This routinely happens to people after they get married.
Once they begin living togetherthe partnership of their whole
life mentioned in the codethey inevitably find out things about
each other which they didnt realize before. He grinds his teeth
in his sleep; she cant balance a checkbook. Such new
discoveries may be disappointing, annoying, exasperatingbut
they dont nullify the marriage. When two spouses exchange
consent, they agree to marry the whole person, warts and all.
This is why canon 1097.2 states that error about a quality of the
person one marries does not render a marriage invalid. (There
are some extreme situations which are exceptions to this rule,
but they need not concern us here.)

It is one thing for a husband to discover after his wedding
that his wife is not a natural blonde after all; it is quite another
thing to find out that she is a different woman altogether! When
one spouse consents to marry the other, the natural presumption
is that he or she at a minimum knows the identity of the other
person.
You mentioned something very interesting: Marriage by
Proxy. A proxy marriage is a marriage performed with one party
to the marriage not being physically present in the ceremony.
Someone stands in for an absent bride or groom. Civilly, this can
happen, for instance, when one party is stationed overseas in
the military. Proxy marriages are prohibited in most of the states.
However some states like Colorado, California, Montana, etc.
allow proxy marriages.
In Colorado, if a party to a marriage is unable to be
present at the solemnization, such party may authorize in writing
a third person to act as such party's proxy. If the person
solemnizing the marriage is satisfied that the absent party is
unable to be present and has consented to the marriage, such
person may solemnize the marriage by proxy. If such person is
not satisfied, the parties may petition the district court for an
order permitting the marriage to be solemnized by proxy.
[ C.R.S. 14-2-109]
Yes, canon law allows marriage by proxy also. Can. 1104
1 stipulates: To contract a marriage validly the contracting
parties must be present together, either in person or by proxy.
2. Those being married are to express matrimonial consent in
words or, if they cannot speak, through equivalent signs.
Canon 1105 1: To enter into a marriage validly by proxy
it is required that: 1) there is a special mandate to contract with a
specific person; 2) the proxy is designated by the one mandating
and fulfills this function personally.
2. To be valid the mandate must be signed by the one
mandating and by the pastor or ordinary of the place where the
mandate is given, or by a priest delegated by either of them, or
at least by two witnesses, or it must be made by means of a
document which is authentic according to the norm of civil law.
3. If the one mandating cannot write, this is to be noted
in the mandate itself and another witness is to be added who
also signs the document; otherwise, the mandate is invalid.
4. If the one mandating revokes the mandate or
develops amentia before the proxy contracts in his or her name,
the marriage is invalid even if the proxy or the other contracting
party does not know this.
Marriage by proxy, then, is not application to the case at
hand. We are perhaps all familiar with Shakespearean-era
spoofs in which a desperate father tricks a bridegroom into
marrying his unattractive older daughter (rather than the
younger, beautiful one whom he actually loves), by keeping the
brides face veiled during the ceremony; but under the current
Code of Canon Law, this situation is absolutely impossible. This
is why canon 1097.1 states unequivocally that error of person
renders a marriage invalid. You cannot consent to form a
partnership of your whole life with another person if you dont
even know who that person is!
