THE USAGE OF MATERIALS IN THE CLASSROOM (PRE, WHILE AND POST)

THE ADVANTAGES
THE DISADVANTAGES
HOW TO IMPROVISE
CLOSURE

Our group choose picture card as our material for our teaching and learning process in our

classroom. Pupils enjoy using it especially Phase One pupils. They eager to use it during pre

or while or post teaching and learning process.

For Erwan, he used picture card during the Set Induction. He thought using the picture

will attract the pupils attention. Besides that, when he teaches pupils in Phase One especially

Year 1 to Year 3, the pupils enjoy playing guessing games by using a picture card that had

been cut by him. Pupils will guess what was the topic that they were going to learn on that

day. This will gain pupils interest before they start to learn.

For Siti Zainab, she use picture card during the while teaching and learning session. She

teaches pupils in Phase 2. To get pupils attraction he needs to use many interesting picture

cards so that the pupils easy to write the sentences. She needs to find a picture with single

verb in it. Then, she joins the picture and asks her pupils to write the story in the pictures

given. For her weak pupils, she had to separate all the pictures so that her weak pupils easy to

write simple sentences. Zainal also agrees with Siti Zainabs opinion. He also uses the picture

cards in his classroom. He teaches pupils in Phase 2 in Year 4. In this stage, pupil is able to

write simple sentences for one picture. Zainal need to introduce some verbs by using the

picture so that his pupils easy to write the sentences. His pupils enjoy it. But sometimes his

weak pupils cannot write the sentences because they do not know what the picture is about.

He needs to think the other way to make his pupils achieve the objectives in writing.
Last but not least, for Khairularifin, he uses picture card during the in the Closure Section

in Teaching and learning process. He uses the picture cards during the closure session

because his pupils, Year 3 pupils are the active pupils. They like to learn and play. So he uses

the materials to enhance and conclude his lesson on that day. He cuts the picture into the

puzzle and her pupils joint back the puzzle to make it the perfect picture. After that his pupils

need to name the picture that they had joint it.

Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory reminds teachers that there are many types

of learners within any one class. Gardner's research indicates that teachers should aim to

appeal to all the different learner types at some point during the course. It is particularly

important to appeal to visual learners, as a very high proportion of learners have this type of

intelligence. Picture cards can be bright and colourful and make a real impact on visual

learners. Many of the activities outlined below will also appeal to kinaesthetic learners.

Using picture cards is one way to attract pupils attention during teaching and learning

session. There are many advantages in using picture cards.

As a motivation to pupils to learn something new. A reading class, as many would agree,

requires the students to be more highly-motivated than any other classes. This is probably

because the questions are boring, or understanding the article itself demands a lot of patience

from the readers. For this reason, delivering an inspiring lesson is a hard task and requires a

great deal of effort from teachers. Using pictures, however, these difficulties can be

overcome.

A teacher can pre-teach vocabulary on, for example, adjectives describing feelings and

actions with ease. Just hand out a number of pictures of faces of people that express different

moods (happy, sad, angry, upset, etc.), the students will learn new vocabulary effectively

while having fun. Pictures allow pupils to pre-teach, practice, or review any vocabulary items
if they take some time to think about how to manipulate them, and what and who they should

include in the pictures. Sports, celebrities, flags of countries, electronic gadgets, buildings

and clothes are just some of the many examples of the different types of topics that allow

teacher to use pictures as a tool for teaching.

Convenience: Finding pictures is very simple and does not take a lot of time. Pictures

come from many sources: magazines, newspapers, posters, search engines, to name a few.

Since many pictures are available from so many sources, it takes very little time for teachers

to choose and prepare the lesson. It only takes about five minutes to find some pictures

related to a reading article and another ten to fifteen minutes to organize them into teaching

materials.

Integrating other skills: Apart from vocabulary building and reviewing, pictures also

allow teachers to integrate other skills including listening, speaking, and writing to a reading

lesson. Depending on the goals of the lesson, a teacher can always incorporate different

techniques to strengthen the skills of his or her students.

Disadvantages of picture card are the form of a card that is not big enough will

complicate students who have weak vision (monocular minus) and sit in the back seat to

see it. Teachers must pay to buy a card or take time to make every meeting because teachers

may not present the same card every face, this will lead to bored for the students themselves.

It is also bulky and inconvenient to carry around. Sometimes the teacher uses the big size of

picture cards.

We will improvise the materials so that it will get easy to use in our classroom. We eill do

some major changes in our material so that our pupils will enjoy our teaching and learning

session in the classroom.

As the conclusion, we as teachers must take advantage of the great variety of materials

and resources available nowadays for teaching English. picture cards are easy to obtain or

create. Thus, the way we use them depend on the creativity and purposes we have for our

lessons and students.

Every time we intend to carry out any task or activity, we should take into account the

multiple intelligences that Howard Gardner mentions when dealing with learning processes.

Flash cards can help developing more than one if we as teacher combine and integrate

activities that include the use of this valuable resource.
