2. Consider a particle moving in the potential V (x) in one spatial dimension, and let be
the parity operator.
(a) Assume that the time-evolving state of the system is such that h i(t1 ) 6= h i(t2 ) for
some times t1 and t2 . Show that V (x) is not a symmetric potential.
(b) Assume instead that V (x) is symmetric and that h i(t) = 1. If a measurement of the
energy is performed at time t, show that the probability of finding the system in the first
excited state is equal to zero.
3. Consider a quantum system with a two-dimensional Hilbert space H. Let {|1i , |2i} be an
orthonormal basis for H, and let the time-dependent Hamiltonian operator for the system
be given by ( > 0)
H(t) = cos((t)) |1i h1| + sin((t)) |1i h2| + sin((t)) |2i h1| cos((t)) |2i h2| .
(a) Assume that (t < 0) = 0 and (t > 0) = /2. If the system is in the ground state at
time t = 0 , what is the probability that it will be found in the ground state upon an energy
measurement at time t = 0+ ?
(b) Assume instead that (t) is slowly-varying, and that (t1 ) = 0 and (t2 ) = /2. If the
system is in the state |2i at time t1 , what is the state at time t2 ?
