About Nainital
Nainital is located in Kumaon foothills in Uttarakhand. The town lies in the midst of mountains,
three of the most significant ones being Mount Naina, Mount Deopatha and Mount Ayarpatha.
The name of the town literally translates to lake of the eye; naina meaning eye and tal
meaning lake.
History of Nainital
The town features in many mythological stories in Indian literature. According to folklore, when
three sages - Atri, Pulastya and Pulaha - visited the town and found no water, they dug a deep
hole where the present lake stands and brought water from Mansarovar Lake in Tibet. Its also
believed that a dip in the lake here is equal to a dip in the holy lake of Mansarovar.
According to another mythological account, Nainital is one of the 64 places where the parts of
Goddess Parvati fell while Lord Shiva was carrying her. This gives the place religious
importance and that is evident from the presence of the Naina Devi Temple, which is dedicated
to Shakti, a form of Parvati.
Nainital is one of the popular hill stations of North India and was founded in 1841 by the British.
It was the summer retreat for the British. They spent their time in this hill station to escape the
extreme hot weather of the plains. The British built many European schools and colleges in the
region, which are operational even today.
Nainital has an approximate population of about 38,559, but the population of the town more
than doubles during the peak tourist season. Of late, there have been concerns by
environmentalists over the deteriorating condition of the lake here.
Things to do in Nainital
Based around a lake, Nainital is a small town with steep mountains covered with green forests.
This beautiful hill station of Uttarakhand has number of sightseeing attractions popular among
tourists. Sightseeing in the town includes elevated peaks of Himalayas, lakes and tree-covered
hillsides. Amongst numerous lakes within as well as around the hill station, Naini Lake is most
popular. Other notable lakes in Nainital are Bhimtal Lake, Naukuchiatal Lake, Khurpatal Lake
and Sat Tal Lakes.
Food & shopping in Nainital
With increasing number of tourists visiting the hill station every year, Nainital has evolved into a
tourists paradise. The best way to get around Nainital is on foot. Moreover the important tourist
hubs like The Mall are shut for vehicles in the evenings. Therefore, exploring Nainital on foot is
the best option for tourists. Also, in areas like the Barra Bazaar, tourists can shop for local
handicrafts, shawls, woolens, fresh produce like fruits and jams. Tourists can avail Nainital
holiday packages to explore the hill station, both in winters and summers.
With commercialisation taking place at a fast pace, much of the area around the lake has been
subjected to deforestation, which has resulted in the silting of the lake and other environmental
issues. Efforts are on to stop the rapid commercialisation and encourage afforestation to restore
the ecological balance of Nainital.
Travelling to Nainital

Page 2/14
The town enjoys cool weather throughout the year; with the maximum temperature in summers
reaching 27 Celsius while the temperature in winter goes down to 7 Celsius. The hill station
even receives snowfall during the winter months of December to February, during which time it
receives the maximum number of tourists.
Nainital is well connected to Delhi and other smaller towns located close to the hill station. The
nearest railway station is in Kathgodam, which is 35 km away. The Indira Gandhi International
Airport in Delhi is the closest to Nainital. Regular private buses ply between Delhi and Nainital. It
takes close to 8 hours to reach Nainital by road from Delhi. The best time to visit Nainital is
from December to June.

Featured review about Nainital

A beautiful place with awesome exposure to nature
"The place where my school bus entered was so beautiful that we couldn't take our eyes off. A
neat & clean lake on one side and the hotels on the other side at the foothills. The atmosphere
is so neat, clean and calm that it will soothen your soul and make you feel refreshed. The hotels
with wooden walls and floors shows a very different kind of artistic creation which will get you
amazed over it.

Try Maggie made by the small vendors on the roadside, being a street food lover you can also
try the Gol gappas 'Pani poori' and Bhel on the Mall road. Eating softy ice cream with cheery on
top will cherish the children inside you. Apart from that hookah and beer bars have an awesome
crowd and flair of entertainment. The boating part with light music on the board will freshen up
your mind and make you stress free and soothen your life and thought.

For children the gaming parlours in the roadside will be best destination. Sometimes the sun
and rain gives you beautiful multiple rainbows on the sky which will be a perfect blend of beauty
of nature. Have a happy stay, must visit place." - Chandra Jaisansaria, New Delhi, 2 weeks

Perfect hill station in Uttarakhand
"Nainital is my one of the favourite spot in Uttarakhand. I can go there every month because the
things are such that makes it so beautiful & addict. The first time I went there with my family and
we stayed for three 3 days in Naini Retreat Resort(read my reviews on it). We reached there at
night. We just had dinner in Resort's restaurant and we get on bed. Morning! Oh its chill
outside. But any ways we had to go. We already did book a cab which was to go all where in
Nainital and the driver told us he will take us to 7 points including Cave garden, Lover's point,
Suicide point, Temple, One Waterfall, Snow view point, Naini lake and Asia's highest Zoo(as he
told). We have had a lot of fun in all the points and stayed there for plenty of time. The view
from Snow peak to the city is quiet romantic. The Naini lake looks like a mango shaped. From
there you can see Himalayas too & The Great Wall of China through Telescopes (you can get
there for some bucks). Cave garden is a good place where you can have fun. Beware at suicide
point specially Acrophobia guys. There's nothing special to eat in there but hand craved candles
are famous. Buy some for your partner or a memo of Naini. Try to visit all the taals, there are 9
as name say Naini-9. The zoo is very interesting as Siberian Tiger the main attraction. Its white
tiger but you need to walk on slopes a lot which you will surely get tired so head at zoo at the
end of day. The Mall road and The huge ground besides mall road and in front of Jama Masjid
is attractive. Try some Tibetan food which you will get inside the mall road and walk after dinner
in the mall road. The place is wonderful. Go explore.

Happy travelling!" - Ansari Zaid, Nagina, 4 weeks ago

Nainital, the lake of Speechless Beauty.
"We, my friend and I visited Nainital in the month of October in this year. It is a Tal(lake) in the
lap of the Himalaya at an altitude of about 2084 mt in the district of Nainital of Kumaun region,
Uttarakhand province of Indian Sub Continent. If you want to get rid of your daily hectic life for
some days then it is a must visit place. The soothing green lake, sailing of boats on it and its
well decorated and maintained surroundings will make your mind peace, calm and joyful. The
area is very clean and it won't allow you to make that dirty.

You can also visit the high altitude zoo where a number of Himalayan rare species of animal
has been sheltered. Another place of attraction is the Naina Devi temple, is one of the "Shakti
peeth" according to Hindu mythology on the bank of Nainital. One can also enjoy the sailing
over the Lake by various types of boat available on rent and witness a gorgeous sunset on the
water of the lake. This is the perfect place for those who love shopping. You can also take a
birdview of the shops at the mall road, the heart of Nainital. Many wax made show-piece,
fragrant candles and various type of woollen clothes are unique there. It is a must visit place for
all nature lovers." - Swakhar Pachal, Kolkata, 1 month ago

Perfect Mountain Getaway To Spend Some Days In Laidback Style
"Nainital town grew up around the Naini Lake. The most important aspect about the place is that
one is bound to feel happy. On one side of the lake is the town of Nainital and on the other side
are green hills. The lake is commendably clean inspite of the row, paddle boats plying on it. The
sailing yachts definitely make the lake unique. This is a destination for all kind of travelers.

The Naina Devi Temple, Barra Bazaar, Snow view point are a must visit. Visit the other lakes
like Bhimtaal, Sariataal, Naukuchiyataal, Sattaal, Khurpataal if you have time. The High Altitude
Zoo can be traversed to see rare Himalayan animals. Small hike trails are also present in the
town. Dorothy's seat is one of them. Nainital upholds the real spirit of India and it is heartening
to find the temple, mosque and gurudwara all standing side by side.

The Mallital end of the lake is very vibrant and buzzing with travellers and locals all enjoying
their day together. Eateries, chaats, rolls, momos, cotton candy, good restaurants all are
present here. Barra Bazaar and Tibetan Markets are the two markets. Candles, wood crafts are
souvenirs one can bring home apart from garments. The candles start from a price range as
low as INR 10 and the stoles from INR 100.

To reach the snow view point one can either hike up. The road is pretty good and shaded by
pine trees. Or one can take the cable car which costs INR 150 per person. Each cable car
allows about 10-11 people at a time. 1 hour is the granted time one can stay in the snow view
point. The snow view point happens to have loads of adventure rides like free fall, trampoline,
go karting etc. Each costs about INR 150-200. Eateries are galore. Excellent view of the snow
peaks is available from here. Binoculars can be rented for INR 10 for 5 Minutes. Aiming games
can also be enjoyed. Secluded place among the pine trees to just watch the nature without
disturbance is here. The aerial view of the lake from the cable-car should not be missed. Do not
forget to walk and just enjoy the scenic lake view from the Mall Road. Sit in the benches shaded
by the maple trees and spend some quality time with your loved ones!" - Tania Mukherjee,
