FOREWORD

Ludwig- Maximilians- Universitt Mnchen (LMU Munich) is a top-level European research

university that looks back on a more than 500-year-long history. LMU Munich also has a
long-standing commitment to create a strong international community: the university is the
academic home of almost 6500 foreign students who come from 125 countries, the largest
contingent at any German university. Moreover, more than 1500 visiting fellows teach and do
research at LMU. The university closely cooperates with more than 400 partner universities
and research institutes all over the world. These cooperations regulate all areas from academic
contacts and student exchanges to the design of joint degree programs and research networks.
For the first time in 2008, LMU Munich offered its summer programs under the name of Mu-
nich International Summer University. MISU is an excellent opportunity for international
students to gain valuable insight into research and teaching at LMU. And whats more, MISU
participants experience a different culture which is ever more important in an increasingly
connected world.
For LMU Munich, MISU is a chance to showcase its academic strengths to an international
cohort of students, as well as to their home universities. Thus, the effort of arranging well
organized summer programs is an investment which is, without doubt, worthwhile. There is
hardly a better ambassador for LMU Munich than someone who returns home from a summer
program full of new impressions and experience.
The story of MISU has been a success since its beginnings. This summer, some 500 partici-
pants with approximately 80 nationalities participated in one of the dedicated MISU courses.
My thanks to all of those who made this success possible; may it continue over the coming years.

MISU at a GLANCE
History

During the 1920s and 30s LMU Munich hosted summer courses pertaining to German lan-
guage and literature. The first course to be documented was a German language class in
the summer of 1927. After an absence of summer programs lasting several decades, LMU
Munich restarted its summer activities in 1996 under the name of Internationaler Mnch-
ner Sommer, once again with a language class. Since then, the number of language classes
has grown, along with the establishment of completely new summer academies covering a
broad selection of scientific subjects. In 2008, LMUs summer courses were integrated into
the Munich International Summer University, or MISU, giving a distinct vision and common
standards to the various programs as well as consolidating its role as an international institu-
tion of LMU Munich. Meanwhile, MISU ranks amongst the largest summer programs of any
German university.

Concept and Key Features

MISU was instituted by LMU Munich in 2007. The MISU Academic Board is chaired by
LMUs Vice President for International Affairs and the MISU office is located at LMUs In-
ternational Affairs unit. Curricula are developed and classes are held by LMU staff, partly in
cooperation with outstanding international partners. A high academic standard is always gu-
aranteed. Low numbers of participants per class, as well as modern and interactive teaching
methods are utilized to ensure that students involved are fully engaged in their studies. All
MISU summer academies and language classes offer the possibility to earn credits (usually
ECTS credit points in accordance with the European Credit Transfer System). MISU pro-
grams are academically intensive, but offer far more than an academic experience alone, as
the participants also learn a great deal about their host city and country during their stay. In
addition, the students are supported by a broad spectrum of services, such as detailed pre-
arrival information and the organization of their accommodation. The fees, which participants
are asked to pay, are calculated to cover the costs only; no profit is gained through any of the
MISU courses or activities. Additionally, MISU strives to offer financial aid in order to fa-
cilitate participation. In 2011, possibilities ranged from a funding of the complete course to a
couple of tuition waivers for students from LMU partner universities.

Objectives

MISU aims at providing its participants with high level academic knowledge as well as an
unforgettable stay in Munich, while simultaneously enhancing the international visibility of
LMU Munich and its academic strengths. Summer programs are also valued as a means to de-
velop international cooperation with partner institutions. They can serve both as an alternative
to longer exchange programs as well as a pathway to further studies at LMU, thus increasing
student mobility and attracting students of extraordinary caliber. MISU is designed to be a
permanent and continuous offer, with a spectrum of courses documenting all relevant acade-
mic subjects of LMU Munich. Hence to increase the number of summer academies by and by
is one further objective for the coming years.

Organization and Responsibilities

The MISU Academic Board functions as an advisory panel and consists of six members: the
Vice President for International Affairs, who acts as the chair; three LMU professors, who re-
present three different disciplines - the social sciences, natural sciences and German language
- and who advise for academic concern; and finally, the head of the International Affairs Office
and the executive director of the IUCM, both of whom advise the board regarding the admini-
strative and non-academic aspects. The practical organization of MISU is divided between
three parties. The MISU office is part of the administration of LMU Munich and is thus the
contact point for MISU within LMU; the International University Club Munich (IUCM) has
taken over the logistics. Academic staff members of LMU faculties or other academic facilities
are responsible for the preparation of schedules, the selection of participants, along with hol-
ding classes, testing, and writing certificates.

Organization

The MISU office was established in the summer of 2007 in order to coordinate existing sum-
mer programs, to cooperate in developing new ones, and to promote communication about
MISU inside LMU, to LMU partners and to interested people around the world.
The International University Club Munich (a registered non-profit association of former LMU
students, or Verein in German, abbreviated as e.V.) has been working since its establish-
ment in 1996 on various functions with LMUs International Affairs Office in order to enhance
the internationality of LMU Munich by helping international students. The cooperation bet-
ween LMU and IUCM is laid down in an agreement. In the case of MISU, the IUCM is one of
three crucial partners to run the MISU courses, as they take over the organisational respon-
sibility and support the development and realization of the courses. To name the main logi-
stic activities: organization of the accommodation (MISU-participants usually live in student
dorms), organization and attendance of excursions (for example to Neuschwanstein Castle,
Berlin, Salzburg, or the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site), realization of the social
program (e.g. opera, museums, soccer games and the Sommerfest), and finally the handling of
participant fees, which is surely one of the most essential businesses.

Events

There are three prominent MISU events during the year: the Annual Meeting, the meetings
of the Academic Board, and the MISU summer campus welcome event. The Annual Meeting
is a get-together with the chance to discuss experiences and ask questions, in particular prac-
tical ones. The program for the following year is also decided upon during this meeting. Under
the auspices of Vice President Prof. Dr. Pohl, the 2011 Annual Meeting took place on April
12 with 15 participants (course directors and organizers of summer academies and language
classes, staff of the IUCM and the MISU/ International Affairs Office). Two meetings of the
Academic Board were organized on January 14 and July 26. As a result of these meetings the
MISU concept was approved and signed by all six members.

The summer campus welcome event is one of the few opportunities to meet the students from
other programs, thus getting an impression of the size of MISU as a whole. This year it took
place on August 3 in LMUs Eulenhof, which is one of the three yards of the central historical
building of LMU Munich. The reason the event was arranged here was to give the participants
a real LMU-summer feeling together with all international students. After the greeting by
Prof. Dr. Putz, Vice President of LMU Munich for many years, approximately 400 guests had
a chance to talk to other students and the teachers while having food and drinks and listening
to live music.

Communication and Contacts

Communication within LMU Munich regards the administration - most notably the University
Executive Board- on one hand, and members of the LMU academic staff on the other hand.
With respect to the establishment of new summer programs, various contacts were made and
several proposals were discussed during the past year. To name the most prominent outcomes,
a new summer academy in the field of International Law will be offered in 2012. Two new spe-
cialist German classes will be in the program as well. One new summer research program in
Life Sciences joined MISU already in 2011 and will continue in 2012.
Parties outside LMU Munich and interested students have been kept informed primarily via the
MISU homepage, which is definitely the most important medium about MISU. With regar-
ds to MISU flyers, the MISU office cooperates with Haak & Nakat (an agency which also
designed the corporate design of LMU) and provides texts and dates. Some other platforms
which report regularly on MISU are: the newsletter of the International Affairs Office, LMUs
international newsletter (insightLMU), along with the brochure and website Summerschools
in Germany by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The international LMU representatives in New York, Shanghai and Bangkok as well as our
partner universities are further important communicators, what of course is also true of people
you can meet at visits, fairs, and other events.

MISU Summer Academies
MISU Summer Academies, which with almost no exception are held
in English, offer high-level instruction in various scientific subject are-
as. Opportunities range from demanding undergraduate courses via
PhD seminars to practical research experience.
Munich Summer Curriculum (MSC):
Exploring Electronic Media
Center for Internet Research and Media
Integration (CIM) at LMU Munich, Electronic
Media Division of the University of Cincinnati (UC), USA

There has been a long-standing cooperation between the University of Cincinnati and LMU
Munich. In 2005, both UC and LMU responded to a challenge grant administered by the Ger-
man Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), called Study Abroad in Germany/ Put Germany on
Your Resume. The following year the Munich Summer Curriculum (MSC): Exploring New
Media was established as one of the summer partner programs at LMU. The MSC 2011 ser-
ved as a test case for admitting students from across the US and the globe to attend the pro-
gram and was finally deemed a success by all participants.

Topics and objectives: The program consists of three modules: a German language class fol-
lowed by a challenging subject-specific study program in the areas of media management,
media technology, media informatics, media theory, and electronic mass media. The crowning
finish of the MSC is a four-week internship in a German media company located within the
Munich area. Electronic Media is a global business and the experience of MSC aims to open
the students mind to that reality.

Target group and application: MSC addresses to sophomore and junior students in relevant
majors.

Certificates: Certificates with grades and ECTS / US quarter credits are rewarded upon suc-
cessful completion of the whole program. The fifteen US quarter credits earned by the US
students count toward their graduation.

Future prospects: DAAD funding ended in 2007, nevertheless the attractiveness of MSC re-
mained unbroken. In 2010 the quality of the program was further confirmed by receiving the
quality seal from the Forum on Education Abroad (USA), stating that it is in alignment with the
Forums Standard of Good Practice.

Munich University Summer Training
in German and European Law (MUST)
LMU Munich, Faculty of Law

The Munich University Summer Training in German and European Law (MUST) started in
2001 as an initiative of LMUs Faculty of Law. Since its beginning it has included visits to the
Max-Planck-Institute of Intellectual Property and Competition Law, some law firms and the
European Patent Office. The program was initiated by Prof. Dr. Dagmar Coester-Waltjen as
a part of DAADs German Summer Academies. Currently, MUST is under the guidance of
Prof. Dr. Ackermann, the successor of Prof. Coester-Waltjen at the Faculty of Law. Since the
DAAD funding ended, a limited number of other scholarships are also available.

Topics and objectives: The overall aim of the course is to convey a deep insight into German
and European Business law. Special attention is devoted to the general structure of German
private law as well as to specific fields of German and European business law; for example,
Competition Law and Corporate and Securities Law. The program brings together exceptional
lawyers and law students from many countries and provides the opportunity to create an in-
ternational alumni network.

Target group and application: Any young lawyer or law student who has done at least one year
of study at university level can apply for the program. Nevertheless, the majority of partici-
pants are postgraduates and researchers. All applications must be done online. Participants
are selected on the basis of their qualifications and academic or practical experiences.

Certificates: At the end of the program students have the opportunity to take an examination.
Successful participation in the examination is documented by a transcript with credits and
grades issued by the Faculty of Law of LMU Munich. In addition, a Certificate of Attendance
is given to all students.

Future Prospects: The program has meanwhile become very well-established and has been
integrated into the Law Faculty. Thus it will surely continue in a similar manner in subsequent
years.

International Summer Research
Program in Nanoscience
Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) at LMU Munich

The Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) was founded in 2006 as part of the framework of
the German Excellence Initiative and has LMU Munich as its speaker. Among the participating
institutes are the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Augsburg University, some Max-
Planck-Institutes and the Center for NanoScience (CeNS). In 2008, NIM decided to establish
an international summer research program. Accommodation, public transport tickets, and fees
for the supporting program are provided and paid for by NIM, in order to help applicants
finance their participation.

Topics and objectives: The goal of the program is primarily scientific education. Students
sharpen their scientific skills while working with state-of-the-art scientific equipment and de-
veloping their presentation and scientific writing abilities. Along with this, they are provided
the opportunity to experience German culture. This program is an eight- week, full- time,
hands -on research program. In 2011, projects in Analytical Transmission Electron Microscopy,
Experimental Physics, Semiconductor Physics, Physical Chemistry, Theoretical Physics - Na-
nothermodynamics, Biochemistry and Theoretical Solid State Physics were offered, and all
were supervised by a graduate fellow. The program aims to attract the best foreign students
for PhD-studentships to LMU Munich.

Target group and application: Master students with a strong background in natural sciences
or engineering and an avid interest to do a PhD are invited to apply.

Certificates: Upon completion of the project participants receive a confirmation of participati-

on, the NIM Student Research Award, and a MISU Certificate.

Future prospects: There is a general intent to continue this program in the following years.

Amgen Scholars Program:
From Molecules to Behavior
Munich Center for Neurosciencess,
Brain and Mind (MCN) at LMU Munich

Together with the University of Cambridge and the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, LMU Munich
was selected as a partner of the Amgen Foundation in order to establish an undergraduate
summer research program in the fields of biology and biotechnology. Under the guidance of
Prof. Benedikt Grothe and directed by Lena Bittl, the summer academy From Molecules to
Behavior has been running since 2009. Participating institutes are: the Munich Center for
Neurosciences Brain and Mind (MCN), the Faculty of Biology at LMU Munich, and the Max-
Planck Institutes of Biochemistry, Neurobiology and Psychiatry. In 2011, 25 projects were
offered in their respective fields of research.

Topics and objectives: The program aims at increasing learning and networking opportunities
for undergraduate students committed to pursuing science or engineering careers.

Target group and application: Eligible students should apply via the programs online appli-
cation site. Qualified students will be selected based upon overall academic success, qualified
references, motivation to pursue research in the selected research area, and a sincere interest
in pursuing a PhD and career in science. Due to the requirements of the Amgen foundation,
however, only students from European countries (according to the European Higher Education
Area (EHEA)) are eligible to participate.

Certificates: A certificate by the European coordination centre of the Amgen Scholars program
at Cambridge University is awarded to all participants.

Future prospects: The first proposal was approved by the Amgen Foundation for 2009 and
2010. A successive one has now been approved for the next 4 years, thus the program will
continue at least until 2014.

Graduate School Life Science Munich (LSM)
at the Biocenter of LMU Munich

The LSM Summer Research Program is aimed at identifying talented and ambitious students
of life sciences early in their academic careers and to recruit them for the LSM doctoral pro-
gram. The international participants work on fascinating and demanding topics in Biology,
Biochemistry or Chemistry. The long-term objective is the internationalization of the Graduate
School LSM. Supported through funding by the DAAD for the first time in summer 2011, LSM
invited outstanding bachelor or master students with a strong background in natural sciences
to join LSM members for six weeks of compelling and demanding research. 19 different pro-
jects have been offered by LSM members and their research groups.

Topics and objectives: The goal of the LSM Summer School program is primarily to sharpen
the scientific skills of the participants while working with state-of-the-art scientific equipment
and developing their presentation and scientific writing abilities, while also experiencing Ger-
man culture, thus enhancing the participants interest in a scientific career in Germany.

Target group and application: Eligible are bachelor (at least 5th or 6th semester) or master
students from relevant fields of life sciences. They should apply via the programs online appli-
cation site. Qualified students will be selected based upon overall academic success, qualified
references, motivation to pursue research in the selected research area, and a sincere interest
in pursuing a PhD and career in science. Due to the requirements of the graduate school, stu-
dents of all countries, with the exception of Germany, are eligible to participate.

Certificates: Upon successful completion of the projects, participants receive a confirmation

with credits issued by the Graduate School Life Science of LMU Munich.

Future prospects: The summer research program 2012 will take place for six weeks in August/
September 2012. The program is planned to be continued in subsequent years.

European Studies in Munich,
Vienna and Prague
Center for Applied Policy Research (CAP),
Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) at Vienna

For the Center for Applied Policy Research (CAP) it was a matter of interest to expand its activi-
ties in the field of education and to deepen its international cooperation. Providing the Centers
know-how and contacts, CAP initiated the European Studies Program in 2005. Since then, the
European Studies Program has been under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Weidenfeld and has been
implemented by CAP. In 2009, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES)
joined the program and has been organizing the Austrian part since then.

Topics and objectives: The objective of the summer academy is to provide students with a
broad understanding of institutional development and the economic, societal, political and
philosophical dimensions of the European integration project. Furthermore, the course ana-
lyses Europes role as an international political and economic actor, as well as its relations to
different countries and regions around the world.
Students with different academic backgrounds and a general interest in European affairs be-
nefit from each other in an intercultural and interdisciplinary learning process. Former classes
consisted of regular students and practitioners such as civil servants, communication experts,
young politicians and even members of parliaments.

Target Group and application: Prerequisites are a good basic knowledge about European po-
litics, law, history and culture, and a strong interest in Europe in general. Class participation,
especially in the discussions with experts, is essential for the success of this course and plays
an important role in the grading process.

Certificates: Certificates with grade, transcript and ECTS credit points are received upon suc-
cessful completion.

Future Prospects: The European Studies program will certainly continue in subsequent years.

The Global Environments Summer
Academy (GESA): Socio-Ecological
Interactions in a Dynamic World

Rachel Carson Center (a joint initiative of

LMU Munich and the Deutsches Museum),
Global Diversity Foundation and its
Biocultural Diversity learning Network (BDLN)

The Rachel Carson Center (RCC) is an international, interdisciplinary center for research and
education in environmental studies. The Global Diversity Foundation (GDF) is an internatio-
nal organization that promotes agricultural, biological and cultural diversity around the world
through research, training and social action. In order to provide a platform for students to
learn, discuss and reflect upon the most pressing, controversial and planetary challenges of
our time, RCC and GDF established this new summer academy in 2011. The goal is to build an
international community of young environmental scholars who will continue to network with
each other as they develop their careers.

Topics and objectives: GESA focuses on human dimensions of global environmental change,
ranging from community management practices and institutions to planetary processes. It
spans local to global scales in exploring the most critical contemporary environmental history,
biocultural diversity studies and sustainability science. In this way, it explores the relationship
between society and the environment in the past, present and future. Using a multidisciplinary
approach, students gain literacy in policy matters and acquire skills in research design, field-
work methods and data analysis in order to document local environmental knowledge.

Target Group and application: Masters or PhD students from around the world who have
the potential to become future environmental leaders in academic, business, community or
governmental institutions.

Certificates: Certificates and transcripts with grade and ECTS credit points are received upon
successful completion.

Future Prospects: The program will continue on an annual basis

Occupational Health Crossing Borders
Institute and Outpatient Clinic for Occupational, Social
and Environmental Medicine, Hospital of the LMU Munich

The two-week summer school Occupational Health Crossing Borders was established in
2008 by the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology & NetTeaching Unit of the Insti-
tute and Outpatient Clinic for Occupational, Social and Environmental Medicine of the Uni-
versity Hospital Munich. This interdisciplinary unit of researchers has several focuses, such
as occupational and environmental risk factors for diseases in Germany and other countries
throughout the world.

Topics and Objectives: The overall aim of this summer academy is to train physicians and other
health specialists who are currently working or being trained in occupational health from low
and middle income countries. The program focuses on the most important aspects of occupa-
tional health in research as well as in practice. It provides the opportunity to explore different
occupational health systems throughout the world while discussing important aspects in the
field across Europe, paying particular attention to the system in Germany.

Target group and application: Occupational health professionals, postgraduate students and
other health specialists currently being trained in occupational health and related fields are the
target group of this course. The prerequisites for applying are a solid knowledge of English as
well as a sound knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Certificates: All participants receive a Certificate of Attendance upon successful completion

German-Japanese Summer Academy
in German Linguistics
Department of German Studies, Nordic Studies, Comparative Studies,
and Study of German as a Foreign Language (LMU Munich)

The Summer Academy is part of a planned cooperation program between the LMU Munich
and universities all over Japan where German Linguistics is taught at the postgraduate level.

Topics and objectives: The primary objective of this summer academy is to provide typological
insights into the nature of the morphological and syntactical structures of German and Japane-
se. Three course contents were central in the 2011 program: Linguistic Typology, Syntax, and
Modality. The course on Linguistic Typology laid its focus on deictic and anaphoric techniques
in Germanic versus East Asian Languages. The course on Syntax treated the left periphery of
the sentences. The course on Modality was devoted to epistemicity, evidentiality, and covert
patterns of modality in German vs. Japanese. Contrary to all other MISU summer academies,
the lanuage of instruction of this program is German.

Target Group and application: Advanced Master and PhD students, young scientists in relevant
fields of study

Certificates: Transcripts with grade and ECTS credit points are conferred upon successful com-
pletion.

Future Prospects: The next Japanese-German Summer Academy in Linguistics will take place
in 2013 at Hiroshima University

German Language Classes
German Language Classes are available at beginners, interme-
diate, and advanced levels, including DSH- or TestDaF- prepara-
tion courses; some specialist classes, such as Business German,
complement the offer.
General German Classes
International University Club Munich (IUCM)

These four-week language classes are designed for foreign students in all areas of study. They
have been offered by IUCM since 1998 in close cooperation with the International Affairs
Office of LMU Munich.

Topics and objectives: Participants are aimed to develop four basic skills: speaking, reading,
writing, and listening. Special focus, however, is laid on communication, in particular in the
areas of culture and academic study. In addition, the courses explore and examine social
contexts with a look at everyday life and culture in Munich. Classes are supplemented by a
variety of activities, such as films and excursions to points of local cultural significance.

Certificates: By regularly attending the course, students are awarded a certificate. This cer-
tificate details the number of lessons attended as well as the content and language level of
the course in accordance with the regulations of the Council of Europes Common European
Framework as recognised throughout Europe.

Future prospects: The continuation of German language classes is guaranteed; only the
number of classes will vary during the years.

The Munich Club for International Relations in Cooperation with the
Year of Study in Munich at the LMU Munich

This specialist class started in 2001 as a distinct summer program and has been running as a
part of MISU since 2008.

Topics and objectives: Participants are constantly engaged with the central theme of Busi-
ness and Economy in discussions, newspaper articles, books, analysis, etc. During the course
they enhance their competence in speaking German, deepen their understanding of econo-
mics, and develop solutions for both familiar and unfamiliar questions. While communication
through discussion is the main focus during the first week, the course concentrates on the
insight and understanding of texts during the following two weeks.

Target Group and application: The program is intended for high school seniors and students
from all academic backgrounds with an interest in international relations and good-to-advan-
ced German skills.

Certificates: At the end of the course, participants have the opportunity to test the knowledge
they have acquired. If they are successful, they receive a certificate with ECTS credit points.

Deutschkurse bei der Universitt Mnchen e.V. (DKFA) offers a specialist class for students
who want to improve their business vocabulary, as well as the most advanced German langu-
age class within MISU, which prepares its participants for DSH and TestDaF examinations.

Topics and objectives: Passing a DSH- or TestDaF- examination is required for academic study
in Germany. Therefore, this course is aimed particularly at prospective students of LMU - or
other German universities.
The goal of the German for Professional Purposes class is to give the participants the op-
portunity to advance their written and spoken German skills in order to use it in a professional
environment. The main emphasis of this course is business in the context of Europe and the
European Union.

Target group and application: Advanced knowledge of German is a prerequisite either for the
German for Professional Purposes or the DSH and TestDaf- preparation class.

Certificates: Regular tests are held in class to check achievements. Upon successful completi-
on and request ECTS credit points are awarded.

Future prospects: Both courses will be offered again in 2012.

It addresses various aspects of European affairs such as economic integration, European co-

on a comparative analysis of regional integration in the EU and ASEAN. The program, which
