Part A
(Marks: 5 x 2 = 10)
1. Explain the atmospheric structure of the earth. Write down typical characteristics of
troposphere and stratosphere.
2. Draw the typical curve showing the change in thrust of air-breathing and non-air-
breathing engines showing their variation with altitude.
3. Write any two types of drags and explain them in brief.
4. Draw a neat picture of airplane depicting its side view and showing all its forces with
relative directions during SSLF. Write the equation of forward motion in accelerated
flight.
5. Write in brief explaining the drag polar.
Part B
6. During SSLF, derive the drag and power equation in the terms of velocity. Also find the
velocity for minimum drag and minimum power required and compare them. (8)
Draw the curves for profile and induced drag and power required and show the respective
velocities for min power required and min drag. (8)
7. In the SSLF find the coefficient of lift and coefficient of drag for minimum power
required and minimum drag. (8)
Write down the concept stalling velocity and explain why flying with velocity lower than
this velocity is not possible. (8)
8. Air airplane flying at sea level has velocity 80 m/sec; weight 70000 N has wing gross
surface area equal to 22 m2. Find the coefficient of lift generated.
If the same plane can generate the maximum coefficient of lift equal to 1.78. Calculate
the stalling velocity for this plane under the same condition. (8)
