Course Description

This course is a study of financial intermediaries performing non-commercial banking operations including their objectives and role in the development of
our economy. Among those discussed in this course are savings banks, rural banks, developmental banks, financing banks, financing companies, pawnshops,
cooperative mutual funds, etc. The different types of services rendered by these institutions are discussed including their role in economic development, how these
institutions are organized, managed and how they serve the credit needs of the public are given emphasis.

General Objectives:
At the end of the semester, the students are expected to:
1. Gain knowledge about the basis general information on the organizations and operations of the various banking and non-banking financial
institutions.
2. Realize and appreciate the role of financial institutions in our social and economic development.
3. Evaluate and analyze different issues and problems in the banking industry.
4. Acquire insights on ways and strategies of extending services to the community, making use of the different theories learned.
5. Prepare them, as they will soon be a part of the real word, specifically the business and the banking world being equipped with general skills and
knowledge required for effective and efficient fulfillment of their tasks.
6. Recognize the need for ethics and social responsibility in any business dealings.
Credit: 3 units
