I am an international educator because I want to inspire students to want to learn. I want to instill
in them the passion to chase their dreams, and try their best to fulfill their desires in life. In order to do so
they must first learn the skills needed to reach their dreams, and my role as an educator is to help them
learn those skills. I want my students to know that with the skills they obtain in school, nothing is
impossible and nothing is unattainable: there are no boundaries.
My role is to provide a safe, accepting and community-based classroom where students feel
welcome, wanted, accepted and free of judgement. My classroom will be a diverse and multicultural
space, where both teaching and learning will take place, and where my students will achieve incredible
things. My students will be culturally and socially sensitive to those who are different from them.
Differences are seen as ways we can learn from others, and challenge our own predetermined ideologies.
My students will be motivated learners who want to make a difference in the world, and bright students
with their own unique identities, and individual aspirations. My students will embark on a journey of selfdiscovery and self-acceptance, community-building, as well as acceptance of the diverse world in which
they live.
Being an English language teacher, I will guide my students in developing their own critical ways
of thinking, and critical ways of approaching various types of texts. Each student will analyze texts from
different genres and cultures, think critically about them, and reflect on the ideas the texts present, as well
as apply their own critical thinking to expand on the ideas. In my own experiences, I have been taught
that what the teacher says is absolute. I will challenge my students to think otherwise: to never accept just
one side of an argument but to examine each side free of bias and come to an educated conclusion. I will
teach them that the English language can be fun to play around with when one knows the rules of
grammar. I will teach them innovative ways to play with language, and the different types of methods
they can use to hide meaning in text, or create meaning out of text. I will teach them that reading is a task
that requires concentration to detail, but that it can be an experience that broadens their horizons, and
increases knowledge and cultural awareness.
I will teach from mainly a student-centered approach, while maintaining some teacher-centered
characteristics. I will instruct, as well as collaborate with students in order to maintain a healthy and
learning-based community. Freires critical consciousness refuses to fatalistically accept the finality of
[societal] structures and it represents the achievement of individual agency. However the individual
knows they must work with others in order to achieve the reconstitution of reality (Monchinski 139).
Such an understanding will help my students with collaborative learning, recognizing that working
together within their local and globalized society can lead to results beyond what they expected. Both
teachers, students, and peers must work together in an inclusive school environment for maximum
learning potential.
To motivate students in my classroom, I encourage the participation of everyone. There is no right
answer per se, only responses that can be built on, and from which they can learn more. I will teach
students to learn by constructing meaning from their own multicultural world. Students learn what is
worthwhile, useful, and easiest to learn, and so my students will engage in material that interests them
(Strickland 11). I will learn about my students identities and incorporate what they like into my
classroom, making them not only relate to, but enjoy the work.
I believe that being an international educator means teaching students to understand and
appreciate all cultures and backgrounds, and to have an open mind about the diversity their world offers
to them. They will understand that there are no borders, and that the more we reach out to each other in
our world, the more we can embrace one other: differences bring us together. I will allow my students the
opportunities to not only learn the material I present, but to explore further for their own interests.
Learning is a fun process of discovery, and in my classroom there is no such thing as too much
knowledge.
