Introduction

Goal

As it is mentioned in the introduction above the experiment goal is to

determine the relationship between the period of a pendulum and its
length , mass of the pendulum bob and the amplitude of the
pendulums motion .

There are different steps to reach the goal of this experiment. First of all, attach the
90 cm rod to the stand base, and attach the pendulum clamp to the rod near the top.
Then attach a piece of string about 2 meters long to the pendulum clamp, then put
the ends of the string on the inner and the outer clips of the clamp ( string form a V
shape). The next two steps are to hang the pendulum bob at the bottom of the
string, and adjust the string so the vertical distance L from the bottom edge of the
pendulum clamp to the middle of the pendulum bob (0.7m). Different procedures
are required at this point of the experiment, procedure one: displace the mass by 5
degrees, pull the pendulum slightly to one side and then rlease it. Then by using
the stop watch record the time t (10 successive oscillations). Calculate the average
period of the pendulum T =t /10. After that record the period for 5 degrees, and
repeat the process for different angles (10,15, and 20 degrees). Procedure two:
repeat the data recording step for 4 different lengths of the pendulum (70-40 cm),
keep the initial angle of the swing at 5 degrees, and then use the same pendulum
bob for each trial (mass will not change). The last step in this procedure is to
record the period of the pendulum for each different length. Procedure three:
return the length of the pendulum to 0.7 m, keep the angle of the swing and the
length of the pendulum the same for each trial, and then repeat the data recording
procedure for each different pendulum bob. Finally, measure the mass of each bob
and record it, and record the period of the pendulum for each different mass. (in
lab report section/calculations)

1. What happens to the period of the pendulum if its amplitude changes

slightly ?
If the amplitude changes the time period doesnt change
2. What happens to the period if its length changes ?
If we increase the length the time period will increase.
3. What happens to the period if its mass changes ?
If we change the mass of the bob the time period will not change
4. Why is it important to hold the mass and amplitude constant when testing
the effect of length on the period of the pendulum ?
Questions

conclusion
The purpose of this experiment was to to determine the relationship between the
period of a pendulum and its length , mass of the pendulum bob and the
amplitude of the pendulums motion, we found the values of them using several
apparatuses and steps. The report is provided with tables that shows in details
the values we set and the values that we got. In each experiment we have to
repeat the steps more than two times to make sure that there is no type of error,
the error may occur in equipment we were using, or even in our reading for the
calculations.
