Introduction
Mixed Reception is a fully interactive chemistry activity in which the user, Detective Stapleton, must solve the mystery of graduate
student Nelsons death. To do this, you must interview suspects (their responses to your questioning are QuickTime movies), gather
evidence by searching rooms with QuickTime Virtual Reality, and analyze evidence in a crime lab environment.
Navigate between actions (interviewing, gathering evidence, and analyzing evidence) with the menu on the bottom of the screen.
Instructions appear in a side bar as you begin each action. You can begin by interviewing suspects or by looking around for clues.
Interviewing Suspects
Gathering Evidence
Analyzing Evidence
When you have finished interviewing the suspects and analyzing the collected evidence, and you can complete a report on the Head
Quarters page of Mixed Reception. An internet connection is required to send the report for grading.
If you have any problems using Mixed Reception, or would like to send us your comments,

*NOTE: Assume the terms Molar Mass and Molecular Weight (MW) mean the same thing for
this activity.*
While you interview suspects and gather evidence, make notes below about each suspect do
you personally suspect them? What reasons might they have had to commit the crime, and most
importantly, how might they have done it? What were their means?
Do you suspect this person?
What is their motive?
How might they have done it?

Case Report Form
1. What is the Molar Mass of the allergy drug (show all of your work)?
2. What is the Molar Mass of the anti-venom (show all of your work)?
3. Did Nelson take his peanut allergy medication that day? Provide evidence that he did
indeed take his medication. (Hint: Look at Coroners Report )
4. An unknown substance (Molar Mass: 765.82 g/mol) was present in Nelsons blood.
CLAIM: What was this substance(s) and describe in detail how did it get into his blood?
EVIDENCE: Provide specific evidence that you have to support this claim.
REASONING: Explain why this substance was responsible for the death of Nelson.
c. How did this person know the anti-venom would kill Nelson?
6. CHALLENGE QUESTION: You determined from the Coroners Report that Nelson had
his allergy medication in his blood. Examine the Coroners Report and the Prescription
