Salinity levels in our drinking water can affect whether we can drink it or not and
we have these issues all around the world. Flooding can be a result of letting in salt
water from the ocean get to our drinking supply which is bad for humans and
environment. In Israel, India, Egypt, San Diego, and Tampa Bay we have Desalination
plants around countries that convert saltwater into drinking water and energy for the
town or city near the plant. Our solution for this problem is to build these desalination
plants that need filtered water the most.
Biomimicry was popularized by scientist and author Janine Benyus she believed
you could mimic nature using modern day technology and other things to bring an area
back to its original state or to help out climate change with that object. Biomimicry has
been used in the past in many ways. People in China have built buildings like beehives
and in Korea they made plant like builds for runoff water for the vegetation around the
city and back in the day a man named George de Mestral used biomimicry to invent
Velcro. He used the idea from spurs as he was pulling them from his dogs hair he
noticed the hooks on it and how it would stick to a lot of things then came his idea of
making Velcro.
People today in 2016 are making buildings look like plants and other organisms
and they are making water filtration devices to clean out water. There has been
scientists making a robot dog thats helps out around your house. There is a new shark
skin swimsuit to provide the swimmer to go faster because the skin has little scales that
align with the water making it groove along the skin. The beaver wet suit is good
because it can keep divers and swimmers warm from the thick layer of blubber. In
Zimbabwe they made a building inspired by a termite den and the reason for this is
because outside the weather can range from 30s to 100s in no time but it can keep a
body temperature like room. The bumps on a whale's fin is inspired scientists to put
bumps on fans and airplane wings and propellers as well as wind turbines the reason
for this is It reduces drag by 32% and increases lift by 8%.
Janine Benyus idea of biomimicry and how it works has opened a whole new
world for people and scientists who want to learn and have been trying to find a way to
have renewable energy and water filtration and other big ideas to not only help climate
change but to help everyone at once. Scientists are now making incredible things
thanks to her studies and how she explained biomimicry. This is a quote by her Were
awake now, and the question is how do we stay awake to the living world? How
do we make the act of asking natures advice a normal part of everyday
inventing? hearing this and seeing it inspired so many people to put nature into
everyday inventions.
Our future is now based off some of the things we can built to help us out. There
will be ways of energy inspired by biomimicry storage and other ways. Architecture has
already been used a lot to make building a good environment for people. Transportation
can be mimicked from birds and animals to make cars faster or planes to fly higher and
do a lot of diffrent things. Agriculture will be used a lot for food, plants, and animals.
They are already starting to use lotus flowers for paint because it will have dust slide of
the pedals and can force dirt away from it because scale like grooves in the pedals just
like the shark skin. Medicine and communication are two more big things scientists will
focus on as well.
Problems today with climate change are very bad for our survival and for our
plants and animals. There is higher temperatures in some places which is bad for
animal and plant survival. Habitats for animals are changing and affecting their homes.
Sea level rising which is causing flooding and salt water get into drinking water thats
why we have desalination plants. Increased risk of storms, droughts, and floods and
that can affect everyone in a huge way. Communities are at risk Because on the coast
where the sea levels are rising flooding can happen and destroy neighborhoods and
potentially harm its residents. Economic impact is another big part.
Biomimicry can help us in huge ways for the future, Water storage and
desalination plants are great for flood water from the ocean and renewable energy as
well as finding a better way to get gasses. We need to invent more things that are
related to nature because we are going to lose a lot of stuff along the way for the rest of
humanity because people are always polluting and doing terrible thing deforestation and
people are having to drink dirty water. In the industrial revolution they started making
machines and other things in factories and it was polluting the surroundings and
comparing that today if we dont stop out problem we could end up in a modern day
industrial revolution and that would probably be bad for climate change. With biomimicry
we can build anything and everything to make things all good again as I said before u
can make things for water, energy, animals, plants, and humans.
The problem or project I am doing is on Desalination plants and water quality for
different countries with water issues. How does my project connect to climate change?
Ocean water flooding into our drinking supply but with all the places getting flooded this
could be huge for us instead of drinking horrible water or are water levels having too
much salinity we could use these plants to filter the water to safe drinking water.
Salt water from the ocean does affect a lot of people living on the coast and near
any water because when it floods from sea levels rising or just excessive rain it could
bring it a lot of water that the salinity is not safe for drinking. More of these desalination
plants would be outstanding for us all. I am going to address it by introducing the
problem to people then explaining my solution to fix it.
Scientists and other people are researching how they can use these plants to
generate energy and make water safe to drink. How can biomimicry solve this problem?
Well plants cant handle salt water but they have been able to beat it before. Humans
use lots of technologies to distill water and make it safe to drink. We either boil it,
evaporate it or even conceding it leaving the salt behind.
Every place that has a plant all have different ways of filtering their water for the
surrounding cities. The ways these are connected through biomimicry are the
mangroves. These mangroves live off of saline water, the sea water runs through the
roots and kind of washes it. The sap is almost salt-free, they attract the salt by
transpiration energy in the narrow capillaries of their roots. Then they filter it through thin
membranes then the salt is detained. The coolest one they have is in San diego this
filter takes the salt water then puts it through multiple filtration devices but that's not
enough so the put the water in a huge barrel type things with a window at the top and it
evaporates the water and leaves the salt behind then the water is released into a whole
new system. This is only some of the filtering they show on this graph. There is another
huge desalination plant in the Tampa bay Area They go through a huge system to filter
out their water.
A lot of flooding happens in florida and when the salt water getting into their
supply they have water that doesn't just have dirt and other gross things in it but it have
a huge level of salinity so these plants can help in a huge way. As you can see on the
chart here the water goes through a lot of pipes and diffrent machines to clean the water
to safe levels of drinking, that's why you see so many contraptions cleaning it, then it
goes through a huge filter like the one in san diego. After two more storage filters it
come out your tap and you are able to drink it.
Desalination plants have specific links to nature in some plants they have
evaporation and in multiple they base their filters off of the mangroves which is
explained above, and surprisingly the fish tilapia. There has been several studies of
scientists trying to figure out if both of these things are the future of desalination.
The filters that are used at the plants all have a different way of filtering their
water. The ways I have seen so far are filtering the water through three minerals
anthracite, sand and gravel. Another way is the evaporation system where the filter has
water that evaporates and leaves the salt and particles behind. These desalination
plants all over the world dont just filter the water they put them in bottles and ship them
to companies like Aquafina, Dasani, Arrowhead, etc. these companies all say they get
there water from springs and runoff and some of that is true for some brands. The plants
they have used are pickleweed and a few more, because these plants grow near
beaches in North America, Europe, South Africa, and South Asia.
The concept on the whole filter device would work with all the plants they have. A
design I could make would not be hard because I would need a magnifying glass and a
tube with salt water in it and a bright enough light to evaporate the water.
This first graph shows what are water percentage could be like in the year 2020.
All these percentages are different water sources. The second graph shows the whole
filter for the tampa bay desalination plant. As you can see it goes through multiple
machines.
The purpose of this project is to explain how a desalination plant has a huge
effect on society. Data, Graphs and pictures all show important information about how
they work and how they are operated. Some of these graphs and data charts show what
our water quality could be in several years and how quickly climate change can affect
these problems we have with water. I read a whole paper on a desalination plant in
israel and they use a evaporation system, they have a huge container that holds the
ocean water and they have a huge bright heated light above it and they evaporate it and
then it is put through a little more filtering to get everything out and then it's bottled or
sent to your cities.
This project has so many connections through nature and its better to fix nature,
or your environment by using biomimicry . These plants can't completely fix climate
change but it can help a lot when it comes to flooding, and now a days its likely to
happen in a lot of cities and towns all around the world. The desalination plant in florida
and a few other places has flooding problems a lot so they need these filters incase the
ocean water affects their water supply. Which then the salinity level will go up, and a
human kidney can only handle so much salt which could end up in hundreds of people
dying from dehydration, the reason of this is your body has to urinate and empty all the
water. The problem is all the salt is stays. Biomimicry, Innovation and climate change is
our future. If we cant start fixing our world then we are all screwed, This is our big
change this is the way we can fix things. Build cities and towns using Biomimicry to it
could potentially help the surrounding environment.
