Reducing motorcycle related trauma on

local roads is the aim of a new campaign
set to run through January and February.
Bacchus Marsh police and the Transport
Accident Commission have joined forces
to target behaviours of road users that
puts motorcycle riders at risk.
Well be focusing on offences in
Bacchus Marsh, anything motorcycle
related, and focusing on the behaviour
of other road users which contributes
to motorcycle trauma - speeding drivers
and all that kind of thing, said Bacchus

Marsh Sergeant Mark Bacon.
And they know where to look
information from collision reports
has been used to identify hotspots of
motorcycle trauma and fatalities, with
the trauma locations set to play host to
a strong police presence over summer.
Sgt Bacon explained that Bacchus
Marsh is one of three locations in the
state granted funding by the TAC to run
the campaign.

motorcycle riders and that kind of thing,

so its an issue that were wanting to
reduce.
When it comes to motorcycle safety, the
requirements are surprisingly minimal
theres no actual legislation in place
requiring motorcycle riders to wear
protective gear other than an approved
helmet, riders are legally allowed to ride
in shorts and thongs.
Approved helmets is one of the checks
that will be made during the operation,
also checking that the engine capacity
of the bike is appropriate to the level
allowed on the license and also, that

the rider actually has a license.
And were looking at speeding, which
is a high contributor to injuries when
motorcycles are speeding, and when
cars are speeding and they impact
motorcycles.
Drug and alcohol impaired drivers will
also be targeted.
Pretty much anything you shouldnt
be doing on the road, well be targeting.
The campaign will run from 7 January
to 25 February.

Brian Andrews is an 87-year-old gentleman from Ballan, not

seen since Wednesday 7 December, 2016.
He was last seen around 1pm at his home address in Ballan
and has not touched his bank accounts or credit cards since.

Ballan police Sergeant Michael Kearnes said enquiries have

been ongoing and they desperately seek public assistance
and for the public to remain vigilant.

Mr Andrews went missing along with his car, a distinctive

2-door grey Citroen sedan with a maroon roof. Registration
of the vehicle is 1BE 9GJ. Neither has been sighted. There has
also been no contact from Mr Andrews to his sons, family
and friends.

Sgt Kearnes said the police Air Wing were called on two
occasions to conduct a search but unfortunately were
diverted to other emergencies.
To date there have been no reported sightings. Possible
addresses and locations have been canvassed including
family in South Australia. Police have also attended previous
known addresses lived in by Mr Andrews and have patrolled
areas containing large bodies of water.

Sgt Kearnes said Mr Andrews urgently requires medication

for a heart condition.
Brian is described as 175cm tall with a slim build and grey
balding hair. He was last seen wearing a maroon jumper and
grey suit jacket. He also wears glasses, Sgt Kearnes said.
The investigation has now been handed over to the

Moorabool CIU for further investigation.
Anyone who believes they may have seen Brian Andrews or
his vehicle, or may have information as to his whereabouts
are urged to please contact crime stoppers on 1800 333 000 or
the Ballan Police Station on 5368 1303.

murder trial plea

One of the men accused

of killing Springbank war
veteran Ken Handford may
withdraw his guilty plea following the surface of new
information.
Adam Williamson pleaded
guilty last year to theft,
aggravated burglary and
murder.
He was listed to face a plea
hearing in the Supreme
Court of Victoria in December, however on the second
day of the hearing new information emerged, which
alleged that Williamson was
not in the room at the time of
Mr Handfords murder.
Mr Handford was tied up
and stabbed 13 times on the
eve of his 90th birthday.
He was left to suffer for
nearly five hours before his
death.
Williamsons lawyer, Richard Edney, told Justice Jane
Dixon on December 16 that
his client was not in the room
when the 90-year-old greatgrandfather was stabbed to
death by co-accused, Jonathon Cooper.
He said Williamson was
unaware that the murder
was taking place, meaning it

Act.
Section 3a involves unintentional killing in the course of
a crime of violence.
Mr Edney said Williamson
was aware Cooper had a
double-bladed knife when
they set out to burgle Mr
Handfords house, however was not complicit in the
knife being brandished.
He said this was the basis of
his clients guilty plea.
Justice Jane Dixon said if
Williamson wanted to apply

to change his plea, a proper
application needed to be
made.
She said while the case had
taken an unusual turn, it
was necessary to follow the
proper processes, which
would include a mini trial.
Williamson will return to
court on February 27, where
a formal application will be
made.
Co-accused Jonathon Cooper will re-appear on February 15 for a separate plea
hearing.
The New Year is expected to bring an

outcome to planning panel hearings held
in relation to the Lal Lal wind farm.
The project, originally developed by
WestWind Energy, has since been sold to
Chinese company Goldwind.
Goldwind is the largest turbine
component producer in the world, but has
had a controversial history in Australia
following the misplacement of turbines on
a site in New South Wales.
A proposed amendment to the original
planning permit was the subject of panel
hearings held in Ballarat in late 2016, with
the proposal of mega turbines concerning
local residents as well as environmental
groups.
John McMahon heads one of the strongest
lobbyist groups in relation to the wind
farm, the Lal Lal Environment Protection
Group, which has opposed the size of the
turbines, as well as other critical issues
including turbine placement.

hearings, in spite of most of them sxxxing

Planning Panel is a gruelling process for
locals to go through, Mr McMahon said.
The panel is expected to deliver its report
by mid-January, following which the
Planning Minister will make a decision on
the amendment application.
Approval has been given for a 17-lot

industrial subdivision in Maddingley, despite
seven objections lodged by neighbouring
residents.
The December 7 council meeting heard
the application for a 17-lot subdivision of
currently vacant land at Kennedy Place, a
three-hectare parcel of land that borders
the Maddingley cemetery on its Western
boundary.
The site is zoned industrial, but is also
within 30m of a residential zone.
Residents argued that the future uses of
the lots are unknown, and therefore the
subdivision poses a risk to residents.
Plans were amended following the objections
to show a landscape buffer between the
industrial area and the residences.
A report prepared by council officers and
tabled at the meeting recommended that the
application be supported.
The subdivision provides for a range of lot
sizes including smaller industrial
lots that are in demand for small service
industries, the report noted.
It is important to note that each lot to be
developed will require an additional
permit for use and development. Each
application will be assessed on its
merits against planning policies at the time.
Councillors voted unanimously to approve
the subdivision.
Kennedy Place will be extended to the south,
with a ring road built for internal access.
Lot sizes will range from 920sqm to 3790sqm.

Pollies regional road trip

It was a rather shadowy
start to the festive season in
Ballan but in a good way.
The vast majority of Victorias state government
shadow ministry met in the
town, a week before Christmas, to discuss local issues
with local people.
Mayor David Edwards said
it was a good opportunity
to speak to them and get to
know them.
It was good of them to
come into Moorabool for it,
Mayor Edwards said.
The meeting was also attended by other representatives, including from the
City of Ballarat and Golden
Plains Shire Council, as
well as Police and CFA
representatives.
Delivering the introduction, Mayor Edwards said
at the meeting that often the
regional areas are neglected,
and pointed out that when
Mathew Guy was Planning
Minister he was instrumental in getting the peri-urban
areas recognised.
Its important to get jobs in
regional Victoria, we dont
want to see 50-60 per cent
of our workforce travelling
into Melbourne; Id love to
see growth in regional Victoria, Mayor Edwards said.
Small towns like Bungaree, and Springbank etc.
have infrastructure in place;
ovals, and recreation facilities, but only 500 people.

for population growth as we
have our small town policy
in Moorabool shire - I see

Little station larger than life

When the trains pulled into
the Ballan Railway Station
on December 22 it marked
a very significant milestone.
It was 130-years since the
terminus between Ballarat
and Melbourne opened in
1886.
Before this time, Ballarat
was linked to Melbourne via
the Melbourne-Geelong and
Geelong-Ballarat Lines.
A small celebration was
hosted by V/Line at the Ballan Railway station on the
morning of December 22,
with local commuters enjoying free coffee and a sausage
sizzle.
A V/Line spokesperson
said Ballan was an important part of Australias largest regional public transport
network.
We are thrilled to celebrate
the 130th anniversary of the

opening of the station with
the local community.
Three years after the official
opening of the railway station, the final section of the
direct line from Melbourne
to Ballarat was completed
following the extension between Ballan and Bacchus
Marsh.
The extension was once described as the heaviest railway work carried out in the
same distance in Australia.
The extension was close to
30-kilometres in length and
included 16 bridges.
Today, Ballan Railway Station is serviced by more than
220 V/Line train services
each week, as well as scheduled coaches and the Night
Network.
The station is staffed each
weekday from 5:30am to
1pm.

A man charged with incidents last year involving reckless

speeding and driving whilst suspended, has pleaded guilty
in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates court.
Slobodan Deronjics offences began on August 25 last year
at around 5:25am whilst driving on the Hamilton Highway
near Geelong.
The court heard Mr Deronjic was travelling at 88kph in a
60kph zone before being pulled over by police who found he
was driving whilst suspended.
Conduct by the accused was much of what drew the ire
of Magistate Simon Zebrowski, with the court hearing
abuse yelled at police at the time included Are you f***ing
serious I heard you were out this way.
The second incident occurred just ten days later on
September 4 on the Bacchus Marsh - Geelong Road at around
10:25am.
The accused was pulled over after police checks showed
once again he was driving whilst suspended. Again he
directed profanities to police saying (sic) What have I done
you f**k maggots?
Deronjics defence counsel said he was now remorseful
and admits that his actions didnt help in the situation and
pleaded for the accused license not to be suspended due to
ongoing work commitments.
Magistrate Zebrowski openly addressed the court.
Why is a person whose license is so important to him
racking up sufficient demerit points then?
Deronjic was fined $1000 for his offences and had his license
suspended for six months.

Pavle Kacanski 74, begun offending on August 20 this year
after driving back to his house with his former partner, the
victim in these matters.
It was alleged the victim wanted to drive her car to her
Ballan home after observing Mr Kacanski drunk.
This angered the accused and it was heard he then
proceeded to slap the victim and drag her into his house
before threatening to kill her.
She later escaped after the police were called and he was
arrested on August 31, telling police that he hadnt threatened
or assaulted her.
On September 2 an intervention order was put in place but
less than a month later on the September 17 that order was

donations

Its never fun to have to pay a fine, but Moorabool Shire

residents have got into the spirit and donated food in
exchange for late library fees.
More than 400 items of non-perishable food have been
donated to the Moorabool Shire Library Services Food for
Fines initiative.
In its second year, the initiative aims to help families in the
lead up to Christmas.
Moorabool Shire Council CEO Rob Croxford said quite a
few food items were also donated by people without library
fines.
Thanks to the communitys generosity, those who struggle
to make ends meet will have a brighter Christmas, he said.
The items will be donated to the Neighbours Place in
Bacchus Marsh and to Ballan District Health and Care.
The Fire Danger Period for Moorabool has begun.

Starting from 12 December, the declaration is in place for
Moorabool as well as the shires of Hepburn, Golden Plains and
City of Ballarat.
CFA District 15 Operations Manager Brett Boatman said
forecasts show potential for an above average fire season, despite
the recent heavy rain and flooding in many parts of the state.
The rainfall experienced in spring has produced a lot of growth,
which could very easily become a high fuel load throughout the
summer season if not properly managed, he said.
Reducing fuel loads will ensure that if a fire does break out, it
has less chance of taking hold or spreading.
While CFA does everything it can, we look to the community
to use common sense and take responsibility for preventing
fires.
Mr Boatman said there is still a short window of opportunity
for residents to clean up their properties if they havent already
done so.
Out of control burn-offs and unregistered burn-offs have been
a major headache for brigades, he said.
You should avoid burning off when high winds are forecast
not only on the day of your burn but for the days afterwards.
For information about burn-off restrictions specific to your
area consult your local council.
Mr Boatman said that this fire season, CFA would be taking
a zero tolerance approach to any fires resulting from negligent
behaviour.
Expect any fire you start to be fully investigated by police,
he said.
Even if you have a permit to use fire over the Fire Danger
Period, make sure you read the conditions carefully. Failing
to follow just one of those conditions may leave you open to
prosecution.

Fire Danger Period

Information
A written permit is required to burn off grass,
undergrowth, weeds or other vegetation
during the FDP. This permit may be issued by
the Municipal Fire Prevention Officer or the
CFA District Office. Please check with your
municipality in the first instance.
Lighting a fire in the open without a permit is an
offence and can bring a penalty of over $21,600
and/or 12 months imprisonment. Barbeques and
fires for cooking and warmth do not require a
permit, but must be lit in properly constructed
fireplaces (to view complete conditions visit cfa.
vic.gov.au/can).
The use of an incinerator, chainsaw/lawn mower,
welding/grinding equipment, and vehicles that
come in contact with vegetation and machinery
with an internal combustion/heat engine are
permitted provided conditions are followed.
Farmers can find legal guidelines and practical
advice at cfa.vic.gov.au/farming this information
is important especially for new farmers, bush
block owners or hobby farmers.
A Total Fire Ban declaration means no fires
can be lit for the declared district for that day
unless there is a specific exemption or special
permit issued. This applies irrespective of the
Fire Restriction status for a given municipality.

been named the 2016 Pride
supporter of the year.
The honour was from the
Victorian Public Sector Pride
Network, which is a peerdirected group of Victorian
Public Sector staff that aims
to support and confidently
promote all parts of the Victorian Public Sector as an
employer of choice, decisionmaker and service provider
for LGBTI Victorians.
The Pride Supporter of
the year award recognises
SRWs dedication to creating a diverse workforce and
inclusive workplace - SRW
was the first Victorian water
corporation to join Pride in
Diversity, and has been active in demonstrating LGBTI
inclusion.
New actions and materials have been developed to
support current and future
transgender staff.

Crime in Moorabool has increased alarmingly over the past

year.
Numbers released in mid December, 2016, by the Crime
Statistics Agency, show increases in crime throughout the
state over the past year and Moorabools increases were
well above average.
A total of 1882 offences had been recorded in Moorabool
in the year up to December 2014, with 2009 total offences
recorded to September 2015, and 2485 total offences recorded
to September 2016, meaning a 23.7 per cent increase over the
year from 2015 to 2016, and an increase of 32.04 per cent from
the period 2014 to 2016.
Just 12 other councils out of the total of 79 in the state
registered higher increases in offences recorded from 2015 to
2016 with many recording decreasing numbers.
For the period 2014 to 2016, 14 councils recorded higher
increases than Moorabool.
When it comes to neighbours, Greater Geelong recorded an
increase of 15.1 per cent over the past year, Golden Plains
recorded an increase of 23.7 per cent, Hepburn recorded
a 10.6 per cent increase, and City of Ballarat recorded an
increase of only 7.7 per cent.
Across the state, the number of offences recorded by police
in the year to 30 September, 2016 was 543,315, up 11.6 per cent
from 487,017 offences recorded in the same period last year.
State-wide, family incidents were up, as were assaults,
robberies, dangerous and negligent acts involving people,
burglary, theft, drug use and possession, breaches of orders,
and transport regulation offences.
Disorderly and offensive conduct charges were down, as
were regulatory driving offences and government regulatory
offences.
The five Local Government Areas with the highest offence
rates according to population were Melbourne, Latrobe,
Yarra, Horsham, and Greater Dandenong.

It was highly successful, and
great for the community but
neither was enough to convince
government to put its hand in its
pocket and fund the Moorabool
Leadership Program.
As Moorabool Shire Council
CEO Rob Croxford explains, the
Moorabool Community Leadership Program was a two-year
pilot project and initiative of the
Moorabool Health and Wellbeing Plan, and was designed to
develop leadership skills, promoting connection, inclusion
and wellbeing.
He said that as part of the pro-
gram, participants developed

small community initiatives
aimed at enhancing inclusion
and connectedness.
Two Rounds of the Moorabool
Community Leadership Program were delivered in 2014/15
and 2015/16 as part of the Pilot
Phase, Mr Croxford said.
There were a total of 34 participants from localities across the
Shire including Bacchus Marsh,
Blackwood, Darley, Mt Egerton,
Yendon, Elaine, Gordon, Hopetoun Park, Maddingley, Greendale, Balliang and Mt Wallace.
Both rounds were highly successful with significant outcomes for the community.
He said that funding to deliver

the two-year pilot program was
made possible through sponsorship of $1000 from the Community Bank (Ballan branch),
as well as a $10,000 contribution
from Central Highlands Primary
Care Partnership.
Additional funding and resources to support the program
came from various one-off internal funding avenues with
the view to pursuing external
funding contributions from
other sources including State
Government Grant Programs to
continue the program past the
two year pilot phase.
Despite the tireless efforts
of Council Officers, however,

Moorabool Shire Council was
not successful in securing external funding to support the delivery of the program past the two
year pilot phase. This is despite
the well documented success of
the program and support from
the community to continue its
delivery.
Competing priorities have
also meant that Council was unable to fully fund the program.
Efforts are continuing to work
with external funders around
resourcing the program as well
as considering how similar outcomes can be achieved for the
community through other capacity building initiatives.
A Springbank farmer who failed to provide

sufficient feed, veterinary treatment and
husbandry to his cattle has been sentenced
to a three month-suspended gaol sentence
and convicted of six animal cruelty charges.
The accused recently pleaded guilty to
two charges of cruelty and four charges
of aggravated cruelty to cattle under the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act
(POCTA) 1986 and has been sentenced, with
conviction, to a three-month suspended
gaol sentence.
Agriculture Victoria Authorised Officer
Marnie Dortmans said the accused was
sentenced in the Ballarat Magistrates
Court on December 12 following numerous
visits to his properties at Springbank over
about 12 months.
During property visits, dead cattle
without any evidence of euthanasia
were seen and numerous stock required
immediate euthanasia to alleviate pain and
suffering, Ms Dortmans said.
Agriculture Victoria officers sought to
alleviate animal suffering by providing the
owner with advice on the appropriate care
of his animals but this was not carried out.
The court was told that post mortem
samples collected showed evidence of
severe emaciation and heavy intestinal
worm burdens in the animals.
Ms Dortmans said the case serves as a
reminder that it is an offence for livestock
owners to fail to provide for the welfare of
livestock. All reasonable attempts must be
made to ensure suffering and weak animals
are euthanised, and proper and sufficient
feed is supplied to livestock.
As well as the suspended sentence and
conviction, the farmer was ordered to pay
service costs and was given a conditional
disqualification order for a period of 12
months under s12(1)(b) of the POCTAA.

taken a step back in time to
celebrate 85 years.
The milestone birthday
was celebrated on Thursday
December 8 at the Bacchus
Marsh Town Hall.
A commemorative spit
roast lunch with 41 members attending, alongside
Moorabool Shire Mayor
Dave Edwards and CWA
State President Machelle
Crichton.
The first CWA meeting

was held at the lounge of
the Royal Hotel in Bacchus
Marsh on December 11, 1931.
CWA member, Karin Wilson said it was absolutely
lovely to celebrate 85 years
of volunteer service.
85 years is a long time to
have served the CWA, but
most importantly Bacchus
Marsh. We are a community-driven volunteer group;
wherever a CWA branch is,
that is the community we
look after, she said.
Following the groups last
monthly meeting for the

year, an award ceremony
was held to recognise long
term service, which ranged
between 10 and 70-years.
Its lovely to think of all the
time people have put in to
our branch here in Bacchus
Marsh and its really important that they get some sort
of recognition for that, Ms
Wilson said.
The ladies can wear their
badge with pride and show
people that that is how many
years they have been putting
in as a volunteer.
The volunteer badges are

a relatively new thing that
the CWA started about 12
months ago, so it was a perfect opportunity for us to
hand out the awards at our
special birthday occasion.
The Bacchus Marsh CWA

has concluded their activities for the year, with the
next meeting to be held in
February. Meetings are held
on the second Thursday
of each month at the Lerderderg Library, 215 Main
Street, Bacchus Marsh.

The annual event is more
or less a get together for
about 70 bear collectors, Ms
Davie said.
We have lunch together;
we play games and we hold
raffles and auctions.
Every year I give money to
a different charity; last year

to be able to give back to the
community.

Coming off the back of winter and a wet spring, residents are being reminded of
Target 155.
The permanent water saving rules of the campaign is
still in place, despite heavy
rainfall.
Western Water is urging
Bacchus Marsh residents to
keep the rules in mind when
using water this summer,

with General Manager of

Service, Graham Holt, saying that while the wet winter
has left water storages well
placed for summer, its still
important to use this precious resource wisely.
Permanent Water Saving
Rules are sensible guidelines
that make sure we take care
with our drinking water,
Mr Holt says.
Being aware of the rules
will help households keep
their water use to 155 litres
or less per person per day,
which is the aim of the State
Governments Target 155
campaign.
Under Permanent Water
Saving Rules you can:
- Water your garden or lawn
with a watering can, bucket
or hand-held hose with a
trigger nozzle at any time.

- Water your garden or lawn
with a watering system such
as a sprinkler only between
6pm and 10am.

bucket, hand-held hose with

by buyers seeking a lifestyle
change, a number of regional Victorias most popular
holiday destinations have
recorded significant capital
growth both over the quarter and the year.
The latest REIV data shows
the median house price in
Halls Gap, bordering the
Grampians National Park,
has increased almost 20 per
cent in the three months to
September 30 to $318,500.
This was up from $267,000
in June.
The Ballarat suburb of Golden Point, near the Sovereign
Hill Goldfields Museum,
also experienced doubledigit quarterly growth, up
10.3 per cent to a median
house price of $295,000.
Solid growth was also recorded in the coastal town of
Metung in East Gippsland,
where the median house
price rose 5.6 per cent over
the quarter to $393,500.
Meanwhile, multiple regional towns also experi-
enced solid price growth in

the year to September 30.
Loch Sport near Ninety
Mile Beach in eastern Victoria recorded one of the states
largest increases this year,
with the median house price
rising more than 25 per cent
to $185,000 an increase of
$37,500.
The popular tourist town of
Cowes on Phillip Island also
experienced solid growth,
with the median house price
increasing 16 per cent to
$394,500. This was up from
$340,000 last year.

Other beachside towns
continuing to show growth
include Torquay, which has
increased 14 per cent in the
past year to a median house
price $690,000; Ocean Grove,
up 5.8 per cent to a median
of $551,250; and Lakes Entrance, up 2.4 per cent to
$302,225.
North west of Melbourne,
house prices in the spa
town of Daylesford rose 8.7
per cent over the year to a
median of $480,000 an an-
nual increase of more than

$40,000.
Other tourist destinations
experiencing price growth
include the riverside town
of Echuca, up 4.6 per cent
to a median house price of
$329,500; and Rochester, less
than 30 kilometres away,
where the median house
price increased 14.8 per cent
over the year to $264,000.

Moorabool Catchment Landcare Group (MCLG)
The Moorabool Catchment Landcare Group, which was established
in 1989, is a highly successful group, with a growing membership
and was a winner in the State Landcare Awards and finalist in the
National Landcare Awards in 2016.
We are now looking for a dynamic Coordinator who will build on the
Groups successes and continue working with and supporting its
members and implementation of its strategic plan.
The MCLG is involved in activities such as
Planting native trees and shrubs;
Controlling serrated tussock, gorse and other weeds;
Eradicating feral animals;
Protecting waterways;
Raising awareness of environmental issues through displays, bus
tours and short courses;
Engaging in environmental issues within the urban and rural setting
The position is for 0.8 (4 days per week) with salary range $52 - 60K
pro rate. Based in Ballan.
Key selection criteria are:
Qualifications and experience in land management, natural or env.
resource management, sustainable agriculture
Ability to source funding, successful in writing grant applications
and project proposals
Project management and organisational skills
Excellent communication skills
High level of networking and stakeholder engagement
IT skills
Abilty to work independently, flexibility and travel
Valid drivers licence and use of own vehicle (work travel expenses
covered)

In a one-day fixture at Darley Park, Lions First XI captain/coach Heath Pritchard
won the toss and elected
to bat, but soon found his
team in desperate trouble
with East Ballarats bowlers
dominating early to have the
Lions scuffling at 6/43 after
Hawks Oli Hayes ripped
through the Darley batting
order. Brad Barnes came to
the crease, and along with
Drew Locke (17) and Sajith
Rupasinghe (20), Barnes
knuckled down and produced his best innings of the
season, scoring 52 off just 72
deliveries with nine fours to
allow the Lions to reach 143
before being dismissed in
their 48th over.
Darleys bowlers started
well but wickets were proving hard to come by early,
with the Hawks well and
truly in the box seat at 2/72
after spinner Rupasinghe
had removed both East Ballarat opening batsmen.
When Pritchard claimed
his first wicket of the day,
and the Lions third, with
the score on 72, the wheels
of motion started to turn,
aided by the spinning balls
delivered by Sri Lankan Hasitha Wickramasinghe, who
quickly claimed two wickets
to have East Ballarat slightly
less comfortable at 5/80, before a pair of run-outs had
the Hawks reeling at 7/103.
When Wickramasinghe had
the dangerous Harli Givvens, who was East Ballarats
top scorer with 36, stumped
by wicketkeeper David
Hoey to leave the Hawks
on 8/105, the Lions were
back on top. Jake Wilkie
soon struck thanks to Zac
Ticehursts third catch of the
day to make the score 9/121,

then just as the last wicket
partnership was threatening
to take the game away from
the Lions, Lachie Herring
and Hoey combined to run
out Shane Gray to dismiss
East Ballarat for 133, giving
the Lions a ten-run win to
remain in second place on
the BCA ladder.
Darleys Second and Third
XIs both suffered defeats in
one-day contests to start the
2017 portion of their seasons.

managed 9/162 off their 45
overs, with Hayden Jamieson (45) and youngster Mitch
Ward (31) top-scoring, with
a 50 run eighth-wicket partnership between Jamieson
and Josh Calvitto (14) being
the only partnership of note
throughout the innings. It
took Lucas just 29 overs to
chase down the Lions total
for the loss of just four wickets, with Ben Longhurst,
Hamish Wheeler, Ryan
Densley and Marcus Ingvorsen the wicket-takers.
The Lions Third XI also lost
by six wickets in their oneday clash with Golden Point
at the Darley Hub. Darley
could manage just 125 after
winning the toss and batting
first, with only middle order
batsmen Darren Hynes (36),
Josh Fitzgerald (20) and captain Liam Jordan (18) reaching double figures. In turn,
Golden Point chased down
the Lions total inside 30
overs for the loss of just four
wickets, with Corey Beaton
taking three of those wickets
to return figures of 3/23 off
nine overs.

Avenue Bowling Club member Ben Gould has achieved,
what is believed to be a first for the club, a win in the recent
Novice Singles Championship in Ballarat.
The competition is an annual event and is open to any
bowler who has been bowling for less than two years.
Ben said winning my first ever bowls championship event
was a terrific feeling. The 38-year-old has only recently
retired from playing cricket (due to injury), and through a
friend was encouraged to take up bowls.
Ben said he really enjoys his bowls.
I encourage anyone who hasnt played the sport to have
a go at playing bowls, and not be daunted by not having
played before.
Ben is one of the clubs qualified bowls coaches and is happy
to assist anyone wishing to take up the sport.
Ben added, the main thing is to enjoy your bowls and
everything else will fall into place.
