Prepare for
grassfire
THE REASONS ARE
BLACK AND WHITE
If you live in a suburb near grasslands, youre at risk of fire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a grassfire starts, walk
at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are, grassfires are unlikely to spread into built up areas.
Stay alert and monitor conditions. Dont drive, visibility may be poor, accidents are likely, and you could block emergency services.

Southern Rural Water has
been named the 2016 Pride
supporter of the year.
The honour was from the
Victorian Public Sector Pride
Network, which is a peerdirected group of Victorian
Public Sector staff that aims
to support and confidently
promote all parts of the Victorian Public Sector as an
employer of choice, decisionmaker and service provider
for LGBTI Victorians.
The Pride Supporter of
the year award recognises
SRWs dedication to creating a diverse workforce and
inclusive workplace - SRW
was the first Victorian water
corporation to join Pride in
Diversity, and has been active in demonstrating LGBTI
inclusion.
New actions and materials have been developed to
support current and future
transgender staff.
Managing Director, Clinton
Rodda was thrilled with the
result.
We have done this work
not only to deliver business
results and to meet governmental requirements, but
also because it is the right
and decent thing to do, he
said.

We are committed to take
a leadership role, as we have
a unique opportunity to assist the LGBTI community in
the regional areas we operate where support structures
may not be as strong as in
the city.
We are really proud of
what we have achieved so
far, but we see ourselves as
just at the beginning of our
journey with our diversity
and inclusion work.
Mr Rodda said that the water industry has traditionally not focussed on raising
awareness about or celebrating its LGBTI workers, but
that SRW is taking big steps
to change that.
We want all of our employees to feel safe and comfortable to be themselves at
work.
The Commissioner for Gender and Sexuality, Ro Allen,

Dear Editor,
Ballan has caught up to the
rest of Australia!
Congratulations to the crew at Zest Cafe for the forethought
and commitment in opening their doors for business during
Christmas and New Year; a time when all the cafes are closed
until after New Year.
What a pleasure to enter a door to a room full of out of
towners and locals alike enjoying the good food, coffee, and
service with smiles. May the management and staff take a
big bow for bringing the town to life at this time. Cheers and
a big thank you.
Happy New Year to all.

Dear Editor,
May I wish OTIS, Ballans current resident graffiti vandal
who graffitied the railway station goods shed and bus stop,

their destructive ways with a spray paint can, they may well
find themselves ELEVATED to the Juvenile Justice System
when they are inevitably caught.

By Peter Glass
Avenue Bowling Club member Ben Gould has achieved,
what is believed to be a first for the club, a win in the recent
Novice Singles Championship in Ballarat.
The competition is an annual event and is open to any
bowler who has been bowling for less than two years.
Ben said winning my first ever bowls championship event
was a terrific feeling. The 38-year-old has only recently
retired from playing cricket (due to injury), and through a
friend was encouraged to take up bowls.
Ben said he really enjoys his bowls.
I encourage anyone who hasnt played the sport to have
a go at playing bowls, and not be daunted by not having
played before.
Ben is one of the clubs qualified bowls coaches and is happy
to assist anyone wishing to take up the sport.
Ben added, the main thing is to enjoy your bowls and
everything else will fall into place.
Sell with a photo - $20 per edition or $50 for 3 months. Simply email
