RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Methods
Research methodology can be measured as one of the imperative central part of a
research effort. Effective and significant adoption and implementation of suitable research
technique can help a researcher to meet the developed research objectives quite significantly.
Moreover, adoption and implementation of accurate research method can help a researcher to
gain positive research outcome quite effectually. It is highly important to discuss the types of
research methodology before going into the details. Research methodology might be segmented
into two dissimilar and important parts, such as quantitative research methodology and
qualitative research methodology. Qualitative research methodology can be considered by a
researcher focusing on the human behaviors, characteristics, motivation, emotion, attitude,
meanings, and other internal variables. On the other hand, a researcher can adopt and implement
quantitative research methodology in a particular research work considering the characteristic of
a research work. A particular researcher generally focuses on the consideration and application of
statistical formulas and application in a research wok in the quantitative research methodology
(Best, 2004). A researcher may accept and apply qualitative research methodology in a particular
research effort focusing on the interpretive nature of a research work. On the other hand, a
researcher may adopt and implement quantitative research methodology in a research work
focusing on the positivism nature of a research work. Moreover, a researcher can adopt and
implement mixed approach in the research work based on the integrated interpretive and
positivism nature of a research work.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Model
Research methodology can be considered as the study of samples, variables, data as well
as information based on the onion model developed by Saunders. The particular onion model
developed by Saunders generally integrates and discusses research strategies, research
approaches, research choices, research methods, time horizons, and research procedures that are
appropriate for a particular study depending upon the on the character of the research work. Most
importantly, it is also important to mention that he researchers need to consider several aspects
apart from the model in order to ensure effective and significant research outcome (Groves,
2011).
It s also important for a researcher to ensure effectual and significant determination of the
appropriate research philosophy as it can help the researcher to maintain principles, ideology,
ethics, transparency, and accuracy throughout the research work. In an addition, it is also
important to mention that the researchers need to focus on timeline development process as the
development of this particular process can help a researcher to ensue effective and valuable
research model integration process. The ability and effectiveness of this particular model can
help a researcher to integrate and use different useful, effective, and contemporary techniques in
the data collection and data analysis process.
Justification of the Selected Research Methods
This research work will focus on the discussion and determination of ethics and
transparency in the adopted and implemented leadership style in the small and medium scaled
organization. This particular work is interpretive in nature. Moreover, the measurement and
determination of ethics can be determined through the significant evaluation, analysis, and

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

evaluation from the gathered information developed by the authors, freelancers, scholars, and
other previous researchers. On the other hand, ethics in leadership also can be identified and
determined through the responses of people associated with particular project or organizations.
Therefore, it can be considered and presented that this particular research works is interpretive in
nature. Considering this act, it can be mentioned that the researcher will approve and execute
qualitative research method for this particular research wok in order to meet the developed
research objectives. Moreover, it is also important to mention that qualitative research method
are suitable for the interpretive research works as it helps the researcher t gain positive, expected
and valuable research in limited time period. It is a cost and time effective research methodology
approach that will motivate the researcher to adopt and implement this quite successfully.
On the other hand, the researcher does need to consider the adoption and implementation
of quantitative research methodology as it can create advantages for the researcher to ensure
effective research outcome as it is also positivism in nature. Therefore, consideration of
quantitative research methodology can impact the research outcome by generating vague
outcome. Consequently, it can be affirmed that the adoption and execution of both quantitative
and qualitative research methodology in this particular research work is highly justified (Axinn,
2006).
Research Approach
It is clear from the above discussion that those different types of research methods can be
adopted and implemented by the researchers focusing on the nature of research work. It is clear
from the above analysis that adoption of qualitative research methodology is highly justified.
According to the onion model, it is important or the researchers to develop an effective research
approach right after the selection and justification research methodology. However, an in-

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

detailed inductive framework can be adopted and implemented in this research work considering
the research method and nature of the research work.
Effective research approach will be enhanced through significant observation process. It
is the most initial and important task within the research work. The observation will be enhanced
by developing and implementing different important patterns. Most importantly, the pattern
development and implementation process can be required in the data collection process. The
focus of the study can be set, once the pattern or approach is settled. On the other hand, objective
approach can be applied and executed in this particular study depending on the positivism nature
of this particular research work. Therefore, it will be justified to adopt and implement a mixed
approach in this particular study as the study has a mixed or combination of interpretive and
positivism approach (Pawar, 2004). The adoption and application of mixed approach will
significantly help a researcher to focus on effectual research outcome generation aspect.
Research Design
After developing research approach, it is also significant for a investigator to focus on
effective and significant research design development process. According to the onion research
model, it is vital for the researchers to focus on the effective and significant research design
development process as it can help the researchers to meet the developed research objectives
quite significantly. On the other hand, effective research design also ensures a systematic
pathway for a researcher that brings efficiency in the overall research work.
Several respondents will be considered and integrated in this particular research work in
order to get required and appropriate data and information to interpret and analyze. Therefore, it
is highly essential for the researchers to focus on effective and significant research deign.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Implication of descriptive research design can be considered as an effective approach. On the

other hand, it is also true that implication of the descriptive research design will help the
researchers to include the experiences and thought process in the research work that are reflected
in the responses from the respondents. On the other hand, it is also vital to mention that an
inductive approach and an objective approach have been considered in this particular research
work focusing on the interpretive and positivism nature of the research work. A researcher may
adopt and implicate descriptive approach in the research method focusing on the combination of
interpretive and positivism nature of a research work.
Population and Sampling
Sampling can be referred as one of the vital aspects of a particular research work. It is s
highly essential to discuss that each and every respondent need to gain responses from the
respondents in the research works in order to gain accurate and expected research work.
Therefore, in this research work, the researcher needs to focus on the sampling process in order
to enhance data collection, data analysis, and research outcome aspect.
The researcher is focusing on the collection of data and information from Maldives.
However, the sample size for this particular research work is 200 as the researcher will select 200
senior as well as junior managers and leaders from the small and medium scaled enterprise based
in Maldives. The country is full of huge number of small and medium enterprises. Moreover it is
highly important for the researchers to focus on all the aspects regarding leadership and ethics of
the small and medium scaled enterprises within the country. Therefore, I would be effective for
the researcher to select large number of population as the sample for this particular research
work. A convenience sampling method or design can be adopted and implemented in this
particular research work focusing on the interpretive nature of the study. Alternatively, the

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

researcher can realize the chances and possibilities of skewed and differentiated results as it is
unknown to the researcher about the number o male employees, female employees, and other
important demographic variables of the respondents.
Data Collection Process
Data collection process is an important element is any king of research activity. However,
data collection part also can be referred as an effective element of research methodology as
effective data collection process can help a researcher to adopt an implement systemic research
method and other approaches Moreover it is also true that effective data collection process
improves the quality of research work, which helps the researchers to gain effective and
significant research output. Data collection process is also referred as the collection or sourcing
of important information from the sources that are required for a particular project or a research
work. Effective data collection process can be segmented into two different vital parts, such as
secondary data collection process and primary data collection process.
Primary data collection can be described as sourcing an collection of data and
information through field works, surveys, interviews, focus group method, questionnaire round,
and other live information collection performances. However, this particular data collection
process has several advantages as well as disadvantages. In terms of advantages, the researchers
can gain live, fresh, current, an up-to-date information and data. This aspect can help the
researchers to ensure quality and transparent research outcome as it can help the researcher to
deal with contemporary information that are practiced in this present era. In terms of
disadvantages, a researcher needs to accept that he or she has to consider extra time and cost.
Primary data collection process is known as the time consuming and costly process.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Secondary data collection process is referred as the collection and sourcing of the data
and information through obtainable data sources, such as books, journals articles, web sites, and
other published works. This secondary data collection process has some advantages as well as
limitations. In terms of advantages, the researchers can adopt and use hue number of data and
information from the existing data sources. On the other hand, it is also important to mention that
the secondary data collection process is both time and cost effective approach. In terms of
disadvantages, the researchers may not get up-to-date and current information through this
aspect. Moreover, the researchers will not gain live and raw data and information through the
secondary data collection process. Therefore, sometimes the researcher can get vague and
inappropriate research outcome.
Selection of Data Collection Technique
The research will adopt and implement both primary and secondary data collection
process for this research work. In an addition, it is also important to mention the consideration of
both secondary and primary data compilation procedure in this research effort can help the
researcher in several ways. First of all, the researcher can gain huge amount of data and
information through this combined approach. It will also help the researchers to gain effective
and significant live information data and information. These two approaches will help the
researcher to examine the ethical considerations and approaches in the applied leadership style
by the organizational leaders and managers in Maldives.
The researcher will adopt and apply semi-structured questionnaire round as the primary
data anthology procedure. In this process, the responses of the 200 respondents will be gathered,
evaluated, and analyzed. On the other hand, the researcher will adopt and implement secondary
information from academic text books, and journals. Considering the advantages of primary and

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

secondary data compilation procedure, it can be mentioned that acceptance and implementation
of combined approach in the research work is justified (Reynard, 2005).
