This question is answered

Hi Everybody,
I have gone through the links and the questions in SDN and ended up in some confusion...
What objects will come in SPAU and SPDD?
What happens to the modifications done in the older version when we upgrade the version? (with
Modification assistant and w/o)
Will they come in these transactions?
And what if we apply some patches(Notes) to the system? What is the impact of these patches to the
SPAU transaction?
Please provide me the information..
Thanks in advance...

hi Sankar,
1. What happens if the objects are modified after the upgrade... Will they also come in this SPAU
transaction..

<i>Ans: Yes, they will come, but not in the current version. The list SAPU/SPDD is generated based
on table SMODILOG. Meaning, SMODILOG will be populated
when you do a modification, but changes will not be reflected SPAU/SPDD readily. During the next
upgrade, all these object will be initially migrated to the new system (with new version of SAP). After
this, basis guys, execute a program using which SPAU/SPDD will be generated based on
SMODILOG table data, transported from previous version. And this is the first step in technical
upgrade.</i>
2. if we modify the standard things... with or without modification assistant..
Will they come and sit in this transaction for further adjustments...??
<i>Ans: not in the current version; A flag will be set in SMODILOG table, based on whether the mod
is done using mod assistant or not, based on this flag, the entries in SPAU/SPDD will be classified,
during next upgrade.</i>
3. if we do any modifications they will be assigned to a Change request. Then where comes the
imporatnace of using with or without modification assistant.?
<i>Ans: If the modification was done using mod-assistant, during the SPAU/SPDD adjustment
activity, the <b>ADOPT CHANGES</b> activity is done automatically on choosing that option
(meaning all the code changes we had done will be carried forward automatically on selecting this
option). Otherwise, we will have to do the changes manually, by going to the editor, navigating from
SPAU, and selecting the change in previous version, and then clicking a button on the application
toolbar (i dont recollect the button name..think it is<b> transfer</b>).</i>
Hope this answers your concerns.

when u done changes in any SAP objects like tables , reports , fm, documentations, and when u are
trying to upgrade to SP level , then SAP asks for Do to want to retain OLD objects or want to Import
Standard SAP objects.
so those which are changed my customer will come into SPAU and SPDD, otherwise no need to do
any thing for ABAPers.

Thanks Prabhu for the reply.

So you mean to say only those objects that were modified in the older version will come under SPAU
and SPDD to decide on whether to retain the modifications or to import the standard objects.
In that case, what is the classification that takes place while placing the objects under with
modification and without modification assistant?
And also note corrections?
Thanks
Sankar.

Hi Sankar,

Difference between With Modification Assistant and Without Modification Assistant:

Modification Assistant Browser was introduced only in Version 4.6. Before that, if the user wanted to
do some changes to the SAP Standard Objects, they have to put their modlogs and they made the
changes. But from Version 4.6, this Modification Browser came into picture in which if the user
wanted to do some changes to the Standard Objects, he can use the buttons like INSERT,
REPLACE, DELETE, etc in the Modification Browser and the SAP itself puts the Standard modlogs
over it.
Thus, the next time (say in a Version Upgrade), if the changes made to the object are through
Modification Assistant, then SAP provides some assistance to deal with them. Those Objects come
under With Modification Assistant. The Objects which the user changed it by himself and had put
his own modlogs, those objects appear under Without Modification Assistant.
Thats how though the Object Type is same; some objects appear under With Modification Assistant
and some under Without Modification Assistant.

Vishnu Priya

hi Sankar,

Please find below, answers to your questions:

I have gone through the links and the questions in SDN and ended up in some confusion...
1.What objects will come in SPAU and SPDD?
<i>Ans: All the objects which are modified, after tansporting to the current system,
will be listed in SPAU and SPDD. SPDD contains the list of all modified Data Dictionary objects, like
tables, dataelements, domains,view...etc. The rest of all the modified repository objects will be listed
in SPAU. </i>
What happens to the modifications done in the older version when we upgrade the version? (with
Modification assistant and w/o)
<i> Ans: After the initial upgrade happens, we have to do adjustments from SPAU/SPDD to maintain
or reset the changes. That is, from the list of objects in SPAU/SPDD, you have to either carry forward
the changes to the new version, by choosing the option <b>ADOPT CHANGES</b> (available on
right click) or <b>RESET TO ORIGINAL</b> (available on right click)</i>.

Will they come in these transactions?

<i> Ans: yes, they will be listed in these transactions, after the BASIS updgrade activity. </i>
And what if we apply some patches(Notes) to the system? What is the impact of these patches to the
SPAU transaction?
<i>Ans: Patches will be supported by the version upgrade. In case of notes, we have to verify
whether these notes are supported by the new version (you can go into
<u>http://www.service.sap.com/notes</u> to verify this. Also, we have to analyze whther the code in
the note is already incorporated in the new version. In this case you can ignore the chanes choosing
<b>RESET TO ORIGINAL</b> option</i>
Hope this helps,
Sajan Joseph.

Thank you very much Joseph...

Direct answers to the questions...
And still I have some more questions:
<i>
'All the objects which are modified, after tansporting to the current system,
will be listed in SPAU and SPDD.' </i>
What happens if the objects are modified after the upgrade... Will they also come in this SPAU
transaction.. Because... when you say Note corrections ... it implies that modification of standard
programs... So if we modify the standard things... with or without modification assistant.. Will they
come and sit in this transaction for further adjustments...?? (I dont think so... Please correct me if I
am wrong).
Even if we do any modifications they will be assigned to a Change request... whcih inturn can be
selected for upgradation/ transporting to the other system. Then where comes the imporatnace of
using with or without modification assistant.?
Please provide some more infomation..
Thanks once again....
Sankar.

Hi Sankar,
As mentioned, SPAU/SPDD are availabe with the correct picture when the next upgrade is done.
However, you can use transaction SE95 to give you a picture of the current environment.
Cheers,
Chris
